Walking in the footsteps of an Emperor
I had heard about this place but never expected it to be so big and breathtaking. Tiananmen Square & the Forbidden City, once home to the Emperor and his extended family, now a place for everyone to congregate and appreciate Chinese culture and history. Walking in this place feels kinda like when you first start practicing martial arts: You're a bit Overwhelmed. Overwhelmed with what you have to learn and accepting of the fact that you need to give your body time to adapt. Just like this place, it wasn't built in a day. The same is true with your development. To avoid being overwhelmed, you must take one step at a time. That's why in our approach we put major focus on the conditioning part first. Your body, like tilling the soil of a garden, ready for harvesting must be just right. Getting your body fit first is a wise way of liking the results you get out of your martial art training. Once that is in place, the foundation you've created will be there for you to fall back on as you continue walking the path of mastery. Sibok M P.S. Training with Cecil Peoples
I'm back! Maintaining my daily tips and blogs is somewhat of a challenge while being away from my home for so long. One more week and everything will be back to normal. On to my number 6 instructor while here in LA. Apart from being a referee and judge during many MMA events, like the last UFC 100, he's also doing a string of reality shows and trains alot of stars in the area. I'm talking about the one and only Cecil Peoples. Before getting to meet him, Bob Wall related a story about him during his early referee days. He was a referee during a Thai Boxing match between an American and a Thai in which the American was winning. Nobody likes to lose to a foreigner especially when the sport you're competing in is native to your country. Out of frustration the Thai fighter started *accidentally* kicking the american fighter in the groin. 2 Warnings later, Cecil stops the fight. Declaring the American, the winner. Out of anger the Thai Fighter tried to kick Cecil in the head. Cecil deflected it and knocked him out with one punch. Very seldomly do we see the Ref doing the knocking out part. So that's my introduction to Cecil Peoples.
This guy is tough and has been there, done that. I was always taught to be immune to criticism or praise. Believing neither one was good for my development.
But when a guy like Cecil compliments you on your speed & power in front of a group of experienced fighters, I can't help but to take it at heart.
Up to now, I can tell all FSD practitioners (whether students inside one of our schools or around the world) that what you're learning is top notch. Take just our Strength Training Kits for example which we've been improving and refining for the past 35 years. It will help lay, like it did for me, a strong fitness foundation to adapt yourself to any sport you undertake, avoid injuries and increase flexibility at the same time. If you're a martial artist and still you haven't been using our Station Training System, what are you waiting for? Get yours here and see what kind of difference it can make in your training. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. If for some reason you didn't know who Cecil was, the next fighter I worked with while in LA is known throughout the world for his devastating leg kicks. Stay tuned. Bob Wall leads the way
If you've been following me for a while now you've heard me talk about the benefits of martial arts training on many occasions. One of the subjects I cover regularly is how martial arts can keep you young, vibrant, alert, strong and active right into old age. I know it to be true. But some people might think when reading my newsletter and think this of me: "How do you really know for sure, you're only in your 30s?" That's when you go to someone who's living it. Enter: Bob Wall. (Sijo and Bob Wall at a recent seminar in Montreal) We've been spending some quality time with him this past week and I can say, I'm fascinated with him not only from a celebrity stand point, who he is and the people whe knows in the martial art community but his level of enthusiasm and willingness to learn new things at his age is an inspiration. Monday morning we had him do one of our advanced workouts, they are challenging for a 2o year old let alone a 70 year old! Still he persisted and impressed all of us. It's a shame that so many people in our society think they're over the hill when they pass 65. Some are plagued with arthritis, others condemned to a walker, some slowly dying from that last cigarette puff, health problems due to mal nutrition and the list goes on. How you feel and look at that age is what you reap from what you sowed during your life time. Are you sowing health seeds right now? Are you sowing death seeds? Start planting seeds now which will continue to give you an abundant, fruitful harvest well into your 70s. Those seeds are not found at your local gardening store they're found right here doing martial arts. If you still haven't experienced FSD training, crops might be disappointing this year, if you are, you already realize how smart of a choice you made. To get started on your first class go here. If you're part of our group and feel ready to step it up, get started on our Intermediate Strength Training Kit today. Talk is Cheap
Hope you had a great weekend, the weather was pristine here in Casselman. Spent all day with my family, my immediate family and kung-fu family yesterday. It was refreshing to play our national sport: Hockey The family that plays and trains together, stick together. I surely couldn't of done what I did this weekend without the help of my kung-fu training. The endurance, the speed, the never give up attitude, and coordination. Just my break-falls and rolls alone saved me from injury. It's always when I play other sports that I realize how kung-fu helped lay a strong sport foundation and if you're like me you've surely come to the same conclusion. I've said it before, everyone should have at least 3 years of martial art training. Above all else, martial arts should teach you about taking action. Thinking, talking, or writing about something is a start but in the end it's all about the DOING. Something the UFC guys didn't do Saturday night if you happened to watch a few of the matches. Maybe YOU also want to start something, you think about it, you've told someone close to you you were going start it but you DIDN'T. Kinda like Fitness. Is it something you just talk or think about or do you commit some time each day to get stronger in that area? Talk really is cheap. Action is king. It reminds me of the saying: "I can't hear what you're saying, your actions speak louder than your words" When will it be the right time to get in shape? Never. The time will never be just right. The more you wait, the more you won't feel like it, you'll say: "maybe tomorrow", the mind will always find ways to distract you away from taking action. The easiest way I've found to get in the fitness habit is to stick to 1 minute exercises. You can exercise for one minute right? An interesting thing happens after a minute, your body craves ... more. Your body craves oxygen. If you've been living a pretty inactive lifestyle and suddenly start, your body will start feeling good very quickly. That's why before you know it, 1 minute will turn into 10 minutes and beyond. We've broken it down for you in a simple system you can start using right away. It's been at the center core of our martial art program for the past 35 years with great results. See what I mean here. Disguise Exercise
Do you realize some people actually view exercise as work and therefore decide not to engage in it? Many of you might have associated massive amounts of pain with exercising because you felt so much of it the day after your first training, making you question why you decided to get in shape and follow a fitness program in the first place. I normally categorize someone's fitness level with "Days of Recovery" you require to get rid of all soreness. It's worth mentioning on a side note that once you have more experience and "time in" training you look for that soreness the day after to judge how hard you pushed yourself. If you feel nothing you're either in tremendous physical shape or you failed to give your maximum output. More on that later. From a beginner's standpoint I follow these basic rules: If you need one day of recovery you're in decent shape. If you take 2 to 3 days to recover and can hardly walk up stairs or sit on the toilet bowl or get out of bed, you really need to stick to your plan and exercise regularly. If you take 4 days or more to recover you seriously need to look at yourself in the mirror and tell yourself: "no matter how great the soreness you might feel now from exercising, it will pale in comparison to the kind of pain and health issues that await you in the future. Heart Attacks, High Blood Pressure, Gallstone operations, Lack of Energy, Circulation problems, Diabetes and Obesity are far more painful than the muscle soreness you experience after your first few workouts. Being a martial art teacher for the past 20 years you have no choice but to evolve and be constantly improving how you communicate with your students to get the best results. And sometimes it also means helping students by disguising repetition, creating a variety of drills which uses the same technique but presented 10 different ways, this is also very effective when working with kids which as you know, have an even shorter attention span than adults. In general we get bored easily and exercising for some might be tedious and boring but it doesn't have to be that way. Today I thought I'd give you ways to "Disguise Exercise". One way to disguise exercise is to blend it into your day. Exercise along side the most common daily chores. Wake up in the morning and instead of walking to the bathroom get down on hands and feet and crawl there without allowing any other body part to touch the floor. Hold a wall sit while brushing your teeth. With the help of the kitchen counter, hold your leg up off to the side and hold for as long as possible while your eggs boil. If you sit in front of a desk all day, squeeze your butt and flex your calves while you work. Take small steps this way and give your body a chance to adapt while you implement healthy habits such as daily exercise. Think of yourself as a fighter. You always want to be ready, use every moment of the day to strenghten yourself. When you think of it we're all fighters. We're all fighting to make a living, to leave our mark, to make a difference, to achieve some level of success and happiness, to defend against cravings which slowly weaken us, to make the right choices. Speaking of choices, I gave just a few examples of what you can do throughout the day to squeeze in exercise. Our Basic Strength Training System offers 50 different bodyweight exercises which can be performed anytime of the day. Remember, one of the things your body craves the most is Oxygen. As you implement little exercises here and there throughout the day and make demands on your body it will come to crave them, one exercise at first might become 3 or 5, maybe even 10. This in turn might lead you to train in the morning when you wake up because you feel so good after you've exercised. Try it and let me know how it goes. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. Exercising is the fastest way to optimize your body's chemistry and improve productivity throughout the day. Learn how to do that here. Putting Fitness First
I never get tired of receiving and reading success stories especially when I know the people on my list can benefit from them. Today I reached in the old mail box and thought I'd share Bill's Story. ---- "Sifu Martin, In response to your daily email, I just wanted to share briefly "my story" I have had an office job for the past 15 years. Over that time my health gradually declined to the point where I was scared to really exert myself for fear of a heart attack. At the start of the summer my wife and I signed my son up for the "Army" run, so I decided to take up jogging so I could be in the run with him. At the same time, I spoke with Sifu Scott about my son attending his school, and Sifu Scott challenged me to join as well. I said "I am not in shape yet...maybe after the summer". He pointed out that Fang Shen Do will get me in shape, and there is no better time than the present to start. It has been four months and in that time I have developed a real enjoyment of the physical (brutal) workouts. I am now able to do about 25 sit-ups in a row, when prior to joining I could do exactly ZERO. My confidence has greatly increased, and I feel so pumped for each class. I am having the time of my life, and I am feeling so much stronger and healthier than before. I know I have a long way to go, but I am giving it 100%. As one man put it "practice does not make perfect, practice IS perfect!". Thanks for taking the time to read this. Bill McEvoy ---- SMP: Bill, Awesome. I'm sure your son is proud of you and gave him a powerful lesson of leading by example. The best is yet to come in your training I can guarantee you that. I'd say that's a pretty good return on his investment, from 0 Sit-Ups to 25, that's one hell of an increase. Just goes to show what you can accomplish if you just decide to start. The hardest part is to take that first step and then to stick with it. It couldn't be easier, if you're not a member yet visit our classes section to get a Free 30 day pass to any of our schools. YOU are the Master
That's what Martial Arts is supposed to teach you. Nothing ever happens if you don't put love and effort into it. No one is coming for you. You can pray all you want, that won't help get rid of that belly fat around your waist. It won't save your marriage. It won't make your kids love you. It won't attract good friends. It won't protect you in a self-defense situation. The only thing you can count on is ACTION. The right action, making the right choices at the right moment. Let's take for example the right "Fitness Action". Mastering what you eat and strengthening your body through daily activity and progressive improvements which you can measure and track are crucial. That's why our Fitness System takes you through different levels of difficulty (White = Basic, Yellow = Intermediate, Blue = Advanced, etc...) so you gradually improve over time. Nobody wants to keep on doing the same exercises at the same pace with the same reps all the time. Going that route is a dead end. Solution: Structured Progresssion Every exercise needs to grow into something else, to keep up with your growth, more challenging exercises have to be integrated to prepare you for the next step. Once your body has adapted, we can push its limits to a whole other level, starting the process all over again. Then, Time increments are changed, rest periods change, and on and on you go. All you need to do is follow the system and everything else takes care of itself. Our Fitness System is something we're particularly proud of, The Dinosaur version we used to teach 30 years ago is a thing of the past. We've had about 30 years to fine tune it and test our results on thousands of students. Result? It friggin' works. Want to start building your dream body? Look no further. Get started now. Teen is kung fu and pushup king
I was particularly impressed when I read this article, I thought I would share parts of it with you. Talk to any parent who has teens in the house and they'll tell you it's not always easy to motivate their kids (even themselves for that matter), especially when it comes to physical training. There are always exceptions to the rule. One of our students in Kingston got named Athlete of the Week by the newspaper "Kingston this Week" recently. At 16, Tristan Euringer recently broke a 40-year pushup record at the Kingston Collegiate and Vocational Institute, doing 55 pushups in one minute. "Martial arts is an athletic outlet for me, it has been for a long time now" Euringer says. "For me, kung fu is where mental and physical philosophies merge, and the things that happen between the mind and the body make sense." One thing for sure, Martial Art Training will give you unusual abilities and strength and endurance are some of them. He went on to say: "My ultimate goal in the (Fang Shen Do) system is to earn my black sash and continue training and expanding my knowledge of martial arts", "I snowboard as a hobby and do regular daily workouts to keep in shape, but Fang Shen Do is the pillar of my athletic life and I hope to master it." I think Tristan is setting an excellent example for all of us. There is no limit to what you can accomplish with the right instructor and the right training program in place. The FSD Fitness Program is designed to transform your body and give you the right mental attitude to tackle any obstacle you might face. At the core of the program you'll find 3 major areas of development: Progressive Improvement (through the different colored training kits) Full Commitment (being engaged emotionally and harvesting a never give up attitude) Full Body (learning to use your body in one unit so every link in the chain is sturdy) Whether it's setting new fitness records in your school or just setting personal best records in the comfort of your own home, when you train the way we do, lasting results are just around the corner. Never Again
While you get set for this new year ask yourself: "What am I fed up about?" What must absolutely change this year? If you find nothing to change or improve upon, that's great, I'm happy for you. I don't know about you but there are still many things in my life and in my training that I want to improve on. If you also feel this way, good. It means you don't want to settle for mediocrity and you possess the discipline to constantly set a high standard for yourself. One thing for sure though, if you don't get disturbed or angry about the current situation you're in or about a destructive habit you subject yourself to or you fail to back up your desire for change with some emotion you'll either never change or the change will be temporary. You have last year to look back on. What did you start last year but didn't finish? How much time went by before you cracked and gave in? Become a master at following through and it starts with two simple words: "Never Again" Those 2 words should echo through your mind this year. When you catch yourself thinking of giving up on your goals of training 3 times a week or catch yourself reaching for food you know goes against your goal of losing X amount of pounds, say it with strength: "Never Again". When someone tries to discourage you from making a career change or tries to sabotage your efforts, say it with strength: "Never Again" This is the perfect time to start something new. This time of year, your motivation should be at an all time high. Act on it. What better way than to get started with one of our strength training kits. If you're a student you'll enjoy having the freedom to use it in between classes. If you're not one yet, you'll be surprised at how easy and fast they are to follow. Once the area of Fitness is taken care of, all your other goals will be that much easier to accomplish this year. Take your Fitness to another level
Most people on my list know I'm a bodyweight fanatic focused on mastering my mind and body. Every once in a while I'll get an inquisitive question from one of my students like: "I know you're all about body weight but if you had to recommend a piece of equipment I can train with, which one would it be?" It would have to reflect the same qualities as our Fitness System: Station Training Simple, Fast, and Intense. Some of you might be ready for this kind of training some of you might be almost there. What I'm about to recommend ties in very well with the exercises you're already doing if you own our Basic or Intermediate Strength Training Kits. This tool simply amplifies the degree of Intensity you must put into each Station. In order to progress you need to make incremental improvements and consistently beat personal past reps, weight or speed records. Sometimes the best way to break out of a plateau is a) be sure you're not over-training, and b) you use specialized equipment so your muscles are forced to adapt and get stronger. This piece of equipment is called the TRX. There's always a more challenging way of doing any exercise. This is why there are 4 levels to our strength training kits (Basic, Intermediate, Advanced and Expert) that give you the natural progression of each exercise and the TRX is used in the more advanced levels. Originally developed for the Marines, it offers the versatility, portability and simplicity I was looking for and also gave me the confidence of knowing the tried and true Marines gave it their stamp of approval. You can find out more about it here. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Strength Training

You've been given a vessel, take care of it. Do not wait until it is completely deteriorated to start maintenance on it. Your most prized asset: Your body. It's Louse Time! To Move is better than to Sit
If you're new to my list of focused, motivated, self- starters, Welcome. (if you're not new jump right away to today's lesson below) Every day I communicate to you the best ways to train and the kind of mindset it takes to get results either in your physical fitness or martial art training. Friday is always what I call: "Louse Time". Modeled after Bruce Lee's strategy in Enter the Dragon. You know that part where he's having tea with the government agent but he's disturbed by one of his students and Bruce Lee tells the agent: It's Louse Time! The agent replies with his British accent: "yes of course". Since I'm 6 years old that scene has always stuck with me and I'll be using that same strategy with YOU every week. Friday is where I share with you Life Lessons and Direction given to me by my dad (and Sifu) every Friday. Today's lesson is: To Move is better than to Sit No matter how you feel, tired, sore, in pain, sluggish, depressed, moody, or stressed, it's always better in the end if you decided to move and exercise instead of opting for sitting and not doing anything. Our morning training today was a challenge. It's getting colder and we both trained extra hard this week, instead of skipping our traditional friday workout, we still did it and let me tell you I'm happy we did. Most of the pain in my legs I felt all week is gone as well as in my shoulders. The morning sweat had a cleansing effect both on my body and mind, feeling clear and focused, determined and commited to my goals. During my interview with Bob Wall I asked him what his secret to Longevity and Health was? As you might already know Bob is in his 70s and showing no signs of stopping any day soon. The similarities between him and my dad are pretty identical in many respects and in the area of fitness it's no different. Bob's fitness paradigm goes like this: Resistance Training (self-induced or assisted) Aerobics (sustained, high intensity workouts) Flexibility (in all ranges of movement) Coming from Bob, it confirms why Station Training is so effective. All of those 3 elements are combined into our strength training program. I've seen the same fast results time and again, it's simply the most efficient way of training to acquire greater strength, endurance, flexibility, balance and coordination. Get your strength training kit now and see what others have to say about it. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Louse Time, Strength Training

It's Louse Time! Will to Succeed
Today's lesson is: The Will to Succeed
Last Sunday during my interview with Bob Wall we got to talk about the 3 major things he could attribute his success to. Without hesitation he fired out all 3 points. Bang, Bang, Bang, just like a three punch combo. The very first one was his Fear of Failure. He was just a skinny kid and he had to put in double the effort in all areas compared to the other more gifted kids in school. It was that determination that landed him a wrestling scholarship when he was 15 years old. His mother was his Tower of Power as he called her and didn't want to let her down. This was the major engine driving his ambition in his early teenage years. Failure for him, ultimately, was not getting the respect he deserved. We all have the potential to accomplish great things if we just learn to believe in ourselves. One way to get this respect was to start training in Martial Arts. One quickly realizes how developing yourself physically, mentally, emotionally and strengthening your spirit raises your self-esteem, confidence and self-image to new heights. This in turn gives you the confidence required to even entertain the idea of reaching for your goals that seem so out of reach at first. Once you have confidence firmly in place you can get started on Bob's second point which I'll cover tomorrow. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. The very first level of confidence is Physical Confidence. Having trust in your body and what it is capable of. Build superior strength and endurance with our Strength Training System which we've been testing for the past 35 years to ensure maximum results, in the least time, while maintaining a steady progression to meet your fitness goals. Almost lost my left hand
When I was 14 years old I had a bad accident. I wasn't supposed to be able to move my left hand ever again. Looking back on that event I'm happy I have the freedom today to use my hand 100%. Doing Double Stick drills, Bo Staff and Chi Sao just wouldn't be the same if I didn't have my left hand! We had just moved into our new school on Isabella St in Ottawa. Side kicking gyproc walls, basically breaking everything we could with baseball bats, sledge hammers and kung-fu. When it came time to take out big glass windows out of their frames that's when it happened. I was pulling out a 3 foot by 3 foot piece of glass with Christian. Both of us carefully nudging and slowly sliding it out of it's frame when suddenly, it broke in half and fell directly onto my wrist, 20 pounds of it. It's only later I would realize why my hand was saved when the doctor explained to me why. Most people's reflex would be to pull the arm away after being cut but I didn't. If I would of, the razor sharp glass would of sliced the main vein and crucial ligaments and tendons in my wrist. There's an exercise we do in our strength training kits that always reminds me of that day. It's called Isometric Press Out. That's what I did out of pure instinct. And it saved my hand. Maybe the exercises we show won't ever be used to save your hand like it did mine but it will definitely make you stronger, tougher and more flexible. Our strength training system is very progressive, meaning it takes you from where you are, no matter what your level of fitness, and helps you build strength and endurance at your own speed. If you're starting out you should get the basic kit. If you're more advanced you should get the intermediate one. Everytime I look at my scar I think: "Never let go". When I feel like quitting in any area of my life I just look at my wrist and keep going. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. I'll be releasing exactly one week from now the Advanced Strength Training Kit. Check your inbox for details very shortly. Labels: Strength Training

Ex students making a comeback
This past week I've been speaking to most of our owners and got similar feedback from a lot of them concerning ex-students. There's been a flood of them coming back. One student in particular was my father's very first student in a church basement of Ottawa, he's now training in St-Leonard. Some say they always wanted to come back, for some it's something my dad said that stuck with them, many bring their kids into the school to get them started, others realized how good they felt when they were training and want to get that feeling back again, or some tried something else but weren't satisfied. Some were gone for a year or two and can't help but notice how things have evolved. Although the core principles of our system have not changed, the drills, the training strategies, the curriculum is in constant evolution and will always keep on evolving. One thing you get when you're a part of our school is a guarantee you'll be learning nothing but the cutting edge in physical training, self-defense, and personal development. If you're one of our ex students and feel like starting back again but wish to be prepared for your comeback, pick up a station training kit so you can build your endurance and strength in less than 30 days so you can get back to training the way you used to. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. I know alot of our ex students are still subscribed to my list but now live too far away like Vancouver, France, Manitoba, or Costa Rica. Just want to let you know I appreciate you keeping contact with me and our organization and maybe our paths will cross again some day. If there's anything you need consult our product section or better yet stay connected with me by joining the Inner Circle. What's in our kids food?
Whenever I have free time, reading is the first thing that comes to mind. I would rather educate myself than to lay still in front of the Zombie Box. I was reading an article yesterday from researchers of Calgary University examining 367 types of foods destined to kids. Being a parent, as soon as someone mentions any research on food and how it effects kids, I'm all ears. Even if you don't have kids, this e-mail today warns you not to trust food companies and expect them to have you and your family's best interests at heart. The results of their research showed that out of the 367 types of foods analyzed: 70% of the products examined contained too much sugar. (What a surprise) 23% had too much fat 17% contained way too much sodium 89% in general contained too much fat, sugar and sodium. 63% of the products boasted their high nutritional value on the package. If we can only control 2 food poisons of our society it's: sugar and salt. If you cut out these 2 ingredients from your diet or your children's diet, you can avoid potentially serious health problems in the future. They are both very addictive and will require some massive will power for most people to kick it out of their diets. I'm still amazed at the record breaking line ups for donuts and coffees as the breakfast of choice of most people. Disgusting. Food Manufacturers now have a new ingredient. It's cheaper and is used in 1000 thousands of products: Corn Starch. Next time you buy any product and scan the ingredient list you'll surely find that poison on it. Stick to fruits and vegetables, grass fed beef (considering you're a meat eater), nuts and seeds, plenty of water and a dynamic fitness training program as taught in our strength training kits. Enjoying the fruits of your Labor?
I came across these tidbits of information about labor day over on history.com. As with alot of holidays, most people, including myself don't really know the history behind each holiday. When you read the facts below you can't help but respect how hard people worked in those days for so little. 12-hour workdays, 7 days a week, were standard in America in the 1800s - and even children worked. The National Labor Union began fighting for an 8-hour workday in 1866. In 1938, the Fair Labor Standards Act set a minimum hourly wage of 25 cents. Also worth mentioning, those years produced some of the strongest men the world ever seen. They still found the time to follow a strength and fitness program despite these work conditions. Are you reaching YOUR full potential? Are you really doing everything you can to get in the best physical shape of your life? On this Labor Day take some time to reflect on the fruits of your labor. Especially the Fitness Labor you've been subjecting yourself to (if not get to it!). Now's the time to make changes to your program by increasing your rep numbers, time held, level of difficulty and degree of Intensity. Natural Progression is built into our strength training kits, yours awaits right here. Aim Higher, Sifu Martin Labels: Strength Training

Getting started in the Martial Arts
What brings more joy than seeing your child finally start to walk? As an instructor it would have to be: Seeing a student finally start to GET it. When you've poured a part of yourself into a student and now you see results. Priceless. Just like watching your child fail so many times at walking and admiring their will to keep trying , I've had the pleasure to watch so many students gain better control of their mind and body through FSD Training. We're very efficient at laying a strong foundation. Once the foundation is strong you can build pretty much anything on it. One of the keys to building a strong foundation is "Work Ethic". In our schools, right away you learn the mindset it requires to succeed in your physical training. The Emotional Intensity you need to bring to it in order to get results. You have to learn how to train. Once you' re good at not giving up in your physical training, that skill transfers automatically in your personal, academic and professional training. I haven't come across many methods for quickly building a rock solid foundation the way we do. You'll need this tool first. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. In conversing with present and past students the subject that always comes up is "You gave me such a strong base that I could learn any other art or start any kind of project and I know I possess the right mentality and foundational skills to be successful at them". Like I mentioned earlier, the first foundational tool can be found here. Labels: Strength Training

Am I regressing? say goodbye to Plateaus
Yesterday I talked about plateaus and keeping track of progression and how it wasn't as important as the FEELING you have when training, there is a reason why I said what I said. When you start training, counting reps and holds as well as measuring flexibility levels is very motivating and crucial to building the drive to do more. In the beginning stages you'll make dramatic improvements in strength, endurance and flexibility. Students sometimes see their numbers double or even triple in the first couple of months. What I'm getting at is when you gain more experience and you've been training for a while you will reach very high numbers, so much so that when you look at how many reps you could do of certain exercises when you first started will seem like a joke. If for example you could only do 25 non-stop push-ups when you started and now after having followed the guidelines found in our strength training kits you build that up to 50 then 75, 95, 100, 115 and eventually to 125, making the jump from 25 to 50 is more exciting than the jump from 120 to 125. Same thing with Squats. If you started at 50 and now you reach the 800 to 1000 rep range you realize there has to be more to your training than just counting and beating rep records. As I mentioned, those are great motivators at first when you make giant leaps in strength and endurance. Same thing with flexibility, once you reach a level of doing a full split and you become flexible and pliable throughout your body and are able to perform full range of movements with ease, you've reached what we call the gold standard. I'll go more in detail about this in another e-mail. When reps are the only thing that you focus on and you don't beat your past record during one of your workouts that's when you start doubting yourself and asking some unnecessary questions: What's happening? Am I regressing?, I must of hit a plateau?, etc... If you simply switch your focus to how good you felt that day in your workout, paid attention to your breath, visualized yourself accomplishing certain goals you've set for yourself professionally and personally during each exercise, worked through the pain and showed yourself it's something you can control, and just had an overall sense of gratitude to be alive and able to do these exercises and movements, that's the important stuff. Focusing on the above elements will keep you motivated forever and help you avoid the dreaded plateau. Follow the system that is outlined in our strength training kits. It's been put to the test for the past 35 years and will automatically push you to progress with each workout. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Strength Training

Home Fitness Program
During the past few weeks I've been bumping into old acquaintances from high school. Some were jocks, captains of hockey teams, girls everyone had their eyes on. And what have they become? FAT. Do you sometimes wonder what your old friends you haven't seen in a while are doing, what they look like as well as what they've accomplished? In most cases they've most certainly regressed. I ask myself WHY? Why did they let themselves go. Why didn't they put Health, Fitness and Flexibility as their number 1 priority? A part of me just wants to grab them by the head and start shaking while I tell them exactly where that road is leading if they keep neglecting themselves. As we say in French: "C'est la vie". Most people are complacent and are too comfortable to even listen to some advice about training. Most often than not if I do mention something about the extra poundage, they agree, they know they should do something, they know the consequences, but still they don't do anything? Let's be different than the norm me and you. Instead of having people we haven't seen in a while silently wonder : "What the hell happened to him", or "I almost didn't recognize her", maybe even "Did you see that ASS". Be commited to looking and feeling your best. Follow our Home physical training system that will leave you feeling like you were 18 again. Get your strength training kit here cause you never know who you're gonna meet on the street. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. Do not be a shadow of what you were or what you can become. Progression in your training
Finally Wednesday is here. Why? Wednesday is my "Training with Brothers Day". Something I look forward to every week. What better way to push yourself when you're surrounded with family. Wednesdays are always a little crazy. It's the day where we experiment, test, and create new drills or training programs and we use each other as test guinea pigs. Just like last week's training left me sore up until today and I'm still feeling it. Maybe at some time in the future I could go through what we did on that grueling day. Anyway, coming back to our training, I cannot stress enough the importance of Intensity in your workouts, they need to be full body with no rests. When you no longer feel pain your body has adapted, make sure you're constantly mixing and changing the order of your stations (as taught in our strength training kits). It's also important for me to test and do everything you learn from us. If a technique or a drill doesn't work for us it ain't gonna get taught in the school. Period. That's the kind of confidence I want you to have, knowing that what you're learning has been scrutinized and tested on a weekly basis. Remember I'm crazy about martial arts, and I follow the japanese KAIZEN principle of never ending improvement (and you should too). What can YOU improve right now? Aim Higher, Sifu Martin P.S. There are just a handful of Neigong DVDs left, get yours here. Also, I was waiting for confirmation for a special Neigong seminar with Raf himself in Ottawa. Best prices for kettlebells
Yesterday we held our Kubotan and Kettlebell Combo Seminar. It's always a pleasure to work with dedicated students who take their training very seriously and show a genuine interest in improving themselves. One weapon you must learn to use is the pencil size kubotan stick. It's legal. It's small and easily concealed. When applied in the correct pressure points will make any grown man scream for his mommy. Knowing you have it on you during a big concert, late at night or walking over to your car in an unattended parking lot is very reassuring. It's also comforting to know you don't need to have it on you. A pencil, pen, keys, cell phone can be used similarly to protect yourself. Certainly not the flashiest of weapons, it holds its place in some of the most effective self-protection weapons available today. From small tools like the Kubotan to BIG ones like the Kettlebells. Kettlebells are a wonderful way to build grip strength, core strength, balance, body awareness, finesse, and skill. To know how to move weight through space is an important element of being a martial artist. Weighing in between 8 to 105 pounds, kettlebells can be twisted, lifted, turned and thrown in a variety of ways to train sport specific exercises or to re-habilitate an injured shoulder or back. A perfect compliment to our already ultra efficient strength training system, kettlebells offer a progressive strength evolution. In order to build strength you need to constantly increase the level of resistance or weight you are moving. How does kettlebells compare to standard weight machines? The best way to explain it is kettle bells feel that much more alive. You need to constantly adjust and stabilize yourself, helping you use the whole body as one unit to perform the various exercises. Compared to a machine where it isolates one particular muscle group and we all know that doesn't help you develop functional, useable power. Your body needs to work as one unit, involving all muscle groups to kick in, if it's going to perform at a peak level. If you're in the market to purchase kettlebells we're completing a big order right now and want to extend the savings to you. Kettlebells are either not available at the local fitness store or way to expensive after you factor in shipping expenses. If you find some for sale, they'll range between 112$ and 149 $ for a standard 36 pds kettlebell. Ours are priced at 99$ and you can pick them up at any of our schools. You could actually make a profit re-selling them to the stores in your area, that's how cheap they are. But I need to know by the end of the week. Send me an e-mail at montreal@fangshendo.com with your order and I'll arrange to place the order for you. Until next time, Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Grip Strength, Kettlebells, kubotan, Strength Training

All the King's Children
The King had 3 children. The first one runs long distances and competes in annual marathons. The second is an aerobic instructor. And the last one is a couch potatoe. The king's assistant wanted to start a training program but didn't know how to get started. So she cornered each one of the children and asked them what they did to stay in shape. The first one told her what he did and invited her to come train with him and his training partners later that day. After seeing the other runners arrive she couldn't help but realize how "bony" and skinny they were. It wasn't quite the "look" she was looking for. She remembered how most marathon runners are extremely skinny and don't look healthy. Plus she remembers the look on runners' faces while running, not quite the look of happiness and fun. Next time you watch runners go by, see if you draw the same conclusion. So she decides running marathons and long distances isn't her thing. A bit disappointed, she goes to speak to the aerobic instructor. He also takes the time to show her what he does. While he's talking she remembers seeing article upon article of experts concluding that slow long cardio is dead and has been dead for a long time. There is no benefit to sustaining an exercise at the same pace for hours at a time. It actually weakens your heart compared to strengthening it. All it does is make your body very efficient at NOT burning fat. She graciously thanks him for his time and pretends she's late for a meeting. A meeting with the Couch Potatoe. When she walks in she sees him sitting on...the couch. He doesn't seem to be doing much but she can't help but notice his lean physique. "How do you stay in shape" she asks? You always seem to have that extra time to sit around and do nothing. "I do have extra time" he replies but I don't do nothing. I use that extra time to educate myself, meditate, read, play, paint, and write. "So how do you keep your body in such great condition?" The secret is in the Intensity. I complete my workout as fast and as Intense as possible. Almost as if there's a time bomb clicking away beside me forcing me to end my workout quickly before it goes BOOM. That's one of the secrets, the others can be found here. Sifu Martin P.S. The moral behind the story is train smart, train fast and train with intensity. Labels: Strength Training

The next step in your training
Last April we held our Advanced Sifu Workouts seminar. I didn't have a chance to post any pictures until, well...today! The theme of the seminar was on introducing our Advanced Strength Training Kit coming out at the end of June and to remind everyone that our body is able to adapt itself to its environment and work conditions. Whether you work with hot steel, in the cold, in hot humid weather, you strike a makiwara to strengthen your hand or kick a bag with your shin, your body will adapt itself quickly and efficiently to perform what you ask of it. Remember it can go both ways. Your body can become very efficient at over-eating, sleeping, and sitting on the couch. The same is true with your workouts. If you fail to change your workouts and throw something different in the mix you might see yourself "plateau" during the course of your evolution. The way our Strength Training kits are designed is very progressive. You'll see how one exercise you learned in the Basic Strength Training Kit prepares you for another in the Intermediate Kit. Then once that exercise is strong and your body is able to perform it well, you'll see how it leads you to another one in the Advanced Kit. And so on and so on with every exercise. The Basic and Intermediate Kits are comprised of over 136 different bodyweight and equipment assisted exercises. I like this saying: "You are what you EAT and you are what you DO" What kind of fuel are you pumping into your body? Here's another saying I like: "You can't out-exercise a bad diet" Focus on Organic Grass-fed Meats, Vegetables, Fruits and nuts should comprise most of your daily food consumption. There's no such thing as "Training Too Hard". Your body will perform what you ask of it. Set new limits for yourself. Start using our Strenth Training System today. More Updates Part 1
I'm finally back and I can give you the full scoop of our week long trip in Europe. I'll have to lay everything in multiple entries or else it will be too long. First of all, congratulations to my brother Sifu Stephane for winning his very first Kickboxing match with 3 weeks preparation. One must wonder how do you get ready for a fight in 3 weeks?
It has a little bit to do with something called: Strength training kit. If you'd like to find out, click on the link above for more information. He delivered a nasty first round knock out. His opponent was given a L-O-N-G 9 count to recover. It ended in a unanimous decision after 3 rounds. I enjoyed watching my brother give and take some shots. We all need to challenge ourselves and he really stepped up to represent our system even though Kickboxing is not what we focus on, seeing the adaptability the system can give you is quite impressive.
Talking about being impressed, here's me talking to World Muay Thai Champion Nick Hewitson and Chief Instructor of Petch Yin Dee Muay Thai International. "I see a carreer for your brother, he's very powerful" A very nice man, we'll be working with him on some other projects in the futur.
Here's another picture of my Brother with 23 time World Kickboxing Champion Jean-Yves Theriault. My brother was on his team representing Canada during this Europe meets Canada Tournament.
A real class act and will also be working closely with him on other projects.
We have it all on HD and will be releasing it on Youtube soon.
More coming up, Sifu Martin

Increase Striking Power
A common question I get asked all the time is: "How can I increase my striking power?" It's a misconception among alot of people that you need big arms to hit really hard. Or that you need to bench press heavy weights and the idea that there's a corrolation between how heavy you press to your level of striking power. When you think of it having power is based on your ability to move your body (Mass) through space with speed. What are the major muscles groups and body parts responsible for generating power? You guessed it, your abs and legs. (Did you?) I don't care how big your arms, delts and chest are, if you have weak abs and weak legs you ain't gonna generate any power, yet how many times have you seen someone in the gym with big arms and pecs but small, out of proportion legs? In Fang Shen Do we understand this concept, remember: you want to be powerful, meaning: having functional strength. Strength you can count on and use in every area of your life. Your legs act as the main launch pad for all of your attacks, train them hard. You need to push off the earth in order to generate momentum in your strikes and your biggest body part is your upper torso which is controlled by your abdominals. Any striking action with hands or feet requires a twisting motion from your midsection. With that said, you better not neglect your core strengthening exercises also. The Basic Strength Training Kit gets you in general overall shape and gets you ready for the next level, the Intermediate Strength Training Kit. It gets you on your way to developing your 2 best assets in your quest for developing power. That's why our Intermediate Strength Training Kit is loaded with those exercises. Get started today. Progressive Strength Building
What a weekend! We held our "Advanced Sifu Workouts" on Sunday. It gave everyone a prequel to the Advanced Strength Training Kit which will be made available very shortly. You will find it interesting to see how an exercise taught in the basic kit evolves and becomes progressively more challenging. A quick example would be Pelvic Lifts leads to Back Bends. Back Bends leads to Wall Walking. Wall Walking Leads to Falling into Bridge. Falling into Bridge leads to Kick-Overs. If your workouts always stay the same you will hit a plateau. You need to alter the exercises. Change the order. Increase repetitions. Increase time held in each position (set new records every workout), and make the exercise progressively harder. With our strength training kits it's built into the system. There are millions of workout combinations and 5 different time intervals to choose from. You might of heard the phrase: "Success is a moving target". Well the same goes for Fitness. Fitness is a moving target. It is not a destination but a journey. A journey I hope you commit to for the rest of your life. To help you stay commited and always striving to be stronger, healthier and faster our strength training kits are available to be put to good use now. Pick one up right here. Family & Friends fitness
The easiest way to stick to an activity is to find or ask a friend to train with you. If you've commited to waking up at a certain hour to do your training chances are knowing a friend is waiting for you outside will force you not to miss. The power of a partner is quite amazing, here's a quick list of why you should find a training partner: -you can push your limits -you have a way to measure your progress (against your partner) -you have friendly competition -you can model your partner if they are better than you -you are held accountable to them -once you've mastered your own body weight you can start using theirs in certain exercises. -you can work through plateaus together -And if your training partner is a spouse or family member it strengthens your bond with each other. Families and couples that train together stay together. You feel like you have a common goal and you both realize there's no need to "let yourself go" after a certain age. Some women let themselves go after having kids. Some men do the same after a certain age. More and more people never even start a fitness and strength program let alone stick with one. Avoid falling into that trap. Refuse to let your health and vitality dwindle away. Hook up with a training partner today and start putting our Partner Conditioning program to the test, it's especially conceived for team training. The best drills and exrecises to do with a partner. Stay commited to your fitness goals
We all know the importance of movement and independence. Or do we? Until we have it taken away from us, that is. I was reading an article about this trainer that works with older clients (70+) and how some of them break down in tears when they start their training program. Saying how they wished they had started when they were younger. They weren't crying because they can't DO the training (you can start at any age) , they're crying because of all that time lost. What kind of results could they have gotten if they had just STARTED. Imagine you were them. How much stronger would you be? Would you have the same health issues? Would you be more aware and in control of your body? That feeling of regret is a heavy burden to carry around. I don't want any part in that. I want you to be as commited as I am to making fitness & flexibility a life long commitment. For some maybe it's different, you STARTED when you were younger and slowly you lost the fitness and health habit over the years to a point where you did less and less, to not doing anything for years and years. Out of the people who did train seriously at one point will tell you those were some of the best days of their lives. So why did they stop? Everyone has a reason. A story to justify why they stopped training. It's not important. Everyone falls off the horse at some point, you just need to get back on the saddle. Will you look back and think of what YOU could have done and accomplished with your body but didn't and secretly wished you did? I hope not. Join me and thousands of others who are reaping the major benefits of short intense workouts as outlined in our strength training kits. Pick yours up today. Getting in shape this summer
Soon all this snow will be gone and you'll be able to resume your outdoor training. Did I hear you right: "You don't train outdoors?" If you DO keep it up, if you don't you have to start doing that. Lots of elements outside make your training more challenging. Uneven terrain, slippery grass, heat, gravel, and the sun. Doing Squats on an incline or decline or un-even terrain gives your legs a different workout. Different muscles kick in to stabilize you so you might feel a different kind of soreness a few days later. Practicing all your footwork drills on slippery grass or wet asphalt leads to increases in stability, balance, and recovery. It also helps you test what works best when kicking. You'll quickly realize low kicks are safer and stronger. Training directly in the sun is a great way to get your vitamin D (a vitamin deficiency in many people today, when you think of it most people are always indoors at work, inside the car while driving or wearing sunblock that makes it impossible for your body to synthesize it) Training in the sun also makes you adapt to it's reflection in your eyes if you're doing a sparring drill or shadow work. You can also incorporate lifting and throwing various objects without fear of hurting someone or damaging the floor where you train. Long distance line drills. Sometimes the space is limited indoors, by going outside you can sprint for longer distances and kick your endurance into high gear. Practicing long weapons like the Bo staff. Bo staff training teaches you to use both your hands in unison to generate maximum power or to perform flawless transitions when flowing from one position to another. Definitely one of my favorite weapons since I'm about 7 years old, training it alone outside will relax you, help with concentration, paying attention to your body and the weapon's momentum. Some students say that my Bo Staff DVD is one of my best ones yet. Maybe YOU can be the judge of that. Get yours here. Adopting Bruce Lee's Louse Time Strategy
Remember I talked about Bruce Lee and the movie Enter the Dragon in past newsletters. That part where the student disturbs Bruce Lee's tea ceremony with the government official. Bruce Lee says: "It's Louse Time" and proceeds to teach life and martial art lessons to the student. I mentioned before, how every friday is MY louse time with my dad. I might make every Friday, Louse time. Where I communicate to you what I learn on a weekly basis from my Sifu. Let me know by e-mail if that would be of any value to you. Today was: Concentrated Action You might be struggling and overwhelmed by the amount of things you have to do in one day. Chances are your attention is scattered all over the place. Trying to do to many things at once. By having concentrated action, you break down your work day into a mini work day. That means for example: if you are to make phone calls you focus exclusively on that. No e-mail, no cell phone, no internet. Just total focus on that task at hand. One hour of checking e-mails, one hour of training and stretching, one hour of... You'll be surprised at what you can accomplish in one day using this principle. This is why our strength training philosophy is so effective. There's no time to think and there's no distractions. If you work your abs you're working your abs non-stop. If it's your legs, it's your legs. You're doing so with full commitment and intensity. It's something to be felt, that's for sure. Pick up our strength training system here and you'll understand what I mean. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. Bruce Lee said something else during his "Louse Time" with that student. He said: "Don't concentrate on the finger or you will miss all that heavenly glory". Be careful what you focus on. You might be putting the most mundane tasks first when you start your day. Start your day by focusing on your most important goals, goals that will improve your life. Everything else comes second. Labels: Bruce Lee, Intensity, Strength Training

When in doubt, TRAIN some more
I'm glad so many of you enjoyed yes terday's e-mail. I wonder if I got some of you going? Just to clarify, physical training and personal development isn't something I ask myself if I SHOULD do. I know alot people struggle with that. The doubt that sets in or your mind questioning if what you're doing is really good for you. Or starting Gung-Ho then losing steam a few months down the road. Martial arts and strength training are at the center core of everything I do. That's what I start with when I wake up. It gets me ready for the day that's in front of me. It really is a habit. Just like brushing your teeth or taking a shower. It's essential to maintain optimal health and vitality. Staying commited to martial arts and physical training also gives a very strong direction to your life. Hand, Forearm, strength and flexibility
When you're training for martial arts or any other sport you have to maintain an equilibrium between strength and flexibility. You also have to train every part of your body. Just like Arnold Schwarzenegger explains in the 1977 movie Pumping Iron. Although I have no aspiration to be as big as he once was, there's a part where he talks about "Symmetry". In his thick accent he says something like: "If I add an inch on my arms I have to add an inch to my calves, an inch to my..." and on and on he goes. Now what does that mean for a Martial Artist? It can mean the same thing in your physical development or from a combat stand point, you have to keep eveything in balance from punching to kicking, weapons to wrestling, and in your personal development, confidence to humility, fear to reason, success to contribution. You have to think of your body and mind as one working unit. One part doesn't function without the other. Students often ask how I developed my forearms. Before I get into that let's talk about why YOU should develop your forearms. 1. Mass + Speed = Lots of power! As you might know, muscle is heavier than fat. The heavier your arm, the more momentum it can create while in movement, therefore inflicting more damage when you strike. It becomes like a "battering ram". 2. Stronger holds and chokes. Without strong hands and forearms, your throws, locks and trapping skills are useless. There are many things I do to develop forearm strength and flexibility. One of the main tools I use is the Stick. When you move a weapon at 100 + km/h the g-force applied on your hands and forearms is quite remarkable and no wonder, helps in the development of those 2 body parts. To know exactly what I mean, you need to feel it for yourself. Pick up my stick training programto increase forearm definition, strength and flexibility. Getting the highest return on investment
I can't help but notice alot of things around us are "hyped up" as valuable but in reality they are not. There's a french saying: "Tout ce qui brille n'est pas or" Translated: "Just because it shines it doesn't mean it's gold" Have you ever made that observation? For example: Movies You see the preview, looks awesome. You see it, it sucks! Or you go to a fancy restaurant and the food is disgusting. You buy a high end car and the dealer tells you it'll hold it's value over time. When you go to re sell it it lost 75 % of it's value. And let's not forget Trips. You plan this exotic trip for months, you go there and the weather is crappy. You lie to your friends saying it was great. You've spent thousands of dollars to relax but end up being more tired and stressed out compared to before you left. All you have to show for it in the end are a few pictures and vague memories of it. Ugh ! I'd rather invest in guaranteed returns on investment. Not once have I felt those feelings of disappointment when I complete a training. Not ever! Nothing comes close to it. The feeling you have when you breathe in deeply. Feeling the sweat on your brow. Listening to your heart beat when you're cooling down. The feeling of accomplishment and reward you have after you've completed your workout. Be wise to invest inside of you not on the outside. To see what I mean go here to start your training, invest in YOU, the feeling and return you'll get from training regularly will cast a shadow over any attempt from different companies trying to make you think there is great value in what THEY are selling. If you've been following my e-mails for a while you'll remember me talking about Mushin and Shoshin states. They are critical to your development both in martial arts or in your physical training. Remember Mushin state stands for: "Fully present in the moment". Not to be stuck in the past or drifting in the future but being fully involved in the NOW moment. A pure state of mind, like when a young baby plays with a new toy. And Shoshin stands for: "Beginner's Mind". To undertake any task how ever mundane or repetitive with child like optimism as if you were doing it for the first time, every time. Today I wanted to focus on Fudoshin. Before I dive into it, I believe weakness in this area is the reason so many people don't get the results they are looking for either when they start training in martial arts or when they start making fitness and conditioning a # 1 priority. Some of you never get fully immersed in the training. Do not allow the mind to wander. When you START training everything is fine. It's new and exciting. But something happens after a while, for some it's after 1 month, others it's after 12 mths. The mind steps in and starts questioning what you're doing, discourages you at times, tempting you to do nothing on your training day. After all, you're tired right? You should sleep in today? You'll do it tomorrow? Fudoshin stands for : "Immoveable Mind" Let nothing distract you or take you off course. Know where you're going and go there with full commitment and intensity. Our strength training program teaches you how to stay focused, never allowing your mind to wander. Try it and let me know your progress. An easy mental exercise you can do
One of my favorite movies of all time is Braveheart. I know every scene by heart and me and my lil' Bro can act out pretty much any one of them with the Scottish Accent. Hilarious. Although recently, I haven't had a chance to watch it. There's one scene that I especially like (actually I like all the scenes). It's just one keyword I use when I'm training. You've heard me talk about that before, you know Keywords? A keyword can be used many different ways. One way is to choose a word that will help you keep the conscious and subconscious mind occupied while doing a certain exercise. It might help you squeeze out a few more minutes when holding a strength position. (Tigers, Hand Stand, etc...) Back to the scene, William Wallace and his army have constructed wood spears, long as a man, and the Royal Cavalry is charging towards them. Wallace's army is anxious to attack but he holds them back using the keyword I use when holding a Back Bends or Forearm Push-Ups. He waits until the very best moment to lift the spears from the ground and they end up impaling the enemy badly. It was a great strategy. The way he says it with intensity and commitment, that's one of the words I like to use when giving up just isn't an option. You'll have to watch the movie if you don't know the answer. Once you have the keyword you'll need to know which exercises to apply this on. For that you'll need to pick up a strength training kit right here. Break out of your comfort zone
So many people are searching for that magic workout, special pill or that new piece of equipment. I had this guy once come see me to take classes and he said he was ready, he wanted to learn the art, train hard, you know all that stuff. Except there was this little problem. He didn't want to SWEAT! "Sweat?!" I said. "Yeah, I don't like to sweat" Can you imagine what I told him? What AM I supposed to say to that? What, you want me to do the push-ups for you? So I told him the nice way: "Sorry Buddy but I can't help you with that", BYE. I think too many people want to be wrapped in comfort when they're training. Things like: Water bottle strapped to their belt, Fully Air conditioned environment, watch TV simultaneously, nice little floor mat, etc... Yes you should stay hydrated but if you're always reaching for that water bottle how's that suppose to help with will power and determination? Distracting yourself with TV? You're supposed to feel your body and be aware of it. Listen to it. Pay attention to weaknesses and plan to strengthen them at your next session (for some it's lower back, shoulders or knees) You're gonna have to go through a little pain to get to some major pleasure. The pleasure of knowing you didn't give up when you could of easily quit. With each training session, you feel you're taking one more step up the ladder of strength, endurance and flexibility. Our training program might not feel as good as flopping on the couch with a bowl of ice cream but I can guarantee you, you'll feel a whole lot better after our workout, you'll have more energy, you'll be feeling awake and charged up for hours, more than that sluggish feeling you'll feel after that very short felt moment of gratification after ingesting that fat infested dish. Get "un"-comfortable, Get trainin' now.Sifu Martin Labels: Purpose, Strength Training

Power of Dreams
No matter what your situation is, you can accomplish anything you desire. If you have a DREAM, you can make it a reality. A dream keeps you motivated, it can help you get through a difficult phase of your life because you keep your focus on the big picture. The VISION you have for yourself. I can't help but to think about my father and how he had all the odds stacked up against him. If you didn't have a chance to read his Bio on the web site it's a pretty inspiring story. It confirms what he's been saying for 3 decades: If he can do it so can you. You just need to believe in yourself. What do you want to accomplish? What do you think about most? What's easy for you to do? What doesn't seem like work? Whatever that is THAT'S your dream and you should pursue it. Some people around you might not agree, you might be criticized but you have to be immune to it. No one can control your destiny, only you can. Dreams are contagious. Especially if you're a father or mother, your dreams can inspire your own kids. Just like my father's dreams helped forge mine. Reaching a point where we share the same dreams about martial arts and personal development. One of his dreams of becoming a firewalking trainer influenced mine and now coming this May we're holding a firewalking event in Bruxelles, France May 8 th to the 10 th. My dad would say: "Everything we have in this world is our own doing, you're 100% responsible for it" That can go both ways. If you don't like what you've been getting out of life you can always dream bigger and better ones. I like to believe how you feel inside reflects what you produce on the outside. The first step to feeling good inside is mastering your body. Here's the training system we've been using with great success for the past 35 years. Don't settle for Artificial Energy
Don't do it! I know it's tempting but don't settle for artificial energy. It's a fact Energy Drinks actually rob you of energy. You see them branded about everywhere nowadays. Nothing about them interest me. Who wants to ingest 200 to 400 mg of caffeine in one drink? Do you know which other drink boasts those same numbers? Coffee. I know it must be hard for some of you to drop that habit. But believe me in the long-term you're in for some serious health issues. Caffeine is the addictive element that makes coffee or energy drinks so appealing - and provides the jolt to smooth the transition from sleep to facing another day at work or school. Take the worst energy drink out there: Monster For every 20 oz. of Monster you drink it takes 6.3 gallons of water to flush it out of your kidneys. The average person drinks 6.3 gallons of water in 23 days. For every 20 oz of Red Bull you drink, with no sugar, it takes .9 gallons of water to flush out your kidneys and the average person drinks .9 gallons of water in about 2 days. ( as published in a recent GNC article).Once caffeine enters your bloodstream, it takes about 15 minutes for you to start feeling its effects. Caffeine stimulates the brain in the same way that cocaine and heroin does: It blocks adenosine reception so you feel alert. It injects adrenaline into the system to give you a boost. It manipulates dopamine production to make you feel good. Energy Drinks don't replenish the body after physical exertion (like sports drinks such as Gatorade). In fact, because Energy Drinks have so much caffeine - they can actually dehydrate the drinker. That means if you're physically exerting yourself and drink just a Red Bull, the lack of hydration could strain your heart. And if you combine energy drinks with alcohol, your risk of dehydration rises. There's another trend among teens and college students. Students whose motor skills, visual reaction times, and judgment are impaired by alcohol may not perceive they are intoxicated as readily when they're also ingesting a stimulant, only the symptoms of drunkenness are reduced - but not the drunkenness. They can't tell if they're drunk; they can't tell if someone else is drunk. So they get hurt, or they hurt someone else. You don't need to rely on artificial sources of energy. The formula is quite simple: Short-dynamic-daily exercise, drink water! (3 glasses a day minimum), fruits and vegetables, protein (from nuts and lean meats), & deep breathing exercises. You might say: "It can't be that simple!" "Oh yes it can!", it just takes a little bit of discipline. Remember what I've talked about before: Do you treat your body like a trash can? Keep ingesting energy drinks and loads of coffee and you'll NEVER find the energy you were looking for in the first place. How to beat muscle soreness
Have you ever had this experience. You put in a great workout. You're feeling great. You go to bed. Next morning you wake up, stretch out your arms and when you get out of bed to make breakfast you feel like someone just stabbed you in the legs. You have a hard time going down the stairs. Just sitting down on a chair is a challenge. You're in PAIN. Yeah that's right, you over-trained. You might be stuck in that same pattern. Why? Watch not to be a Weekend Warrior. The kind of person that gets all motivated and does too much too soon. The WW is in pain for most of the week. Then when the next weekend comes around they usually repeat the same thing. Some are Month Warriors, some are even Year Warriors. Avoid this trap. Remember, progression through slow, incremental, CONSISTENT improvements. We all have different thresholds for pain. Feel too much of it too soon and it will destroy your motivation. To minimize muscle soreness here are some of the things I recommend. The day after your workout, engage in some light activity. You might feel sore at first but once you get the blood flowing you'll feel the soreness and stiffness disappearing. Another strategy is to soak in cold water. It's proven that exposure to cold helps the body process and eliminate lactic acid, the major culprit in muscle soreness. It could mean taking a cold shower after a workout or for the more daring, going outside in a bathing suit rolling around in the snow. My favorite. Last step to avoid muscle soreness: Be Smart. If you're starting out, go slowly, just do the minimum and in time you will build your strength, endurance and flexibility. That's why our basic strength training kit comes with a 30 second interval CD. It gives you a chance to work up to the 1, 2, 3, and 5 minute intervals. Our strength training system is in place, you just need to start and we'll take care of the rest. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Consistency, Muscle Soreness, Strength Training

Modeling leads to Strength, Flexibility and Endurance
We brought our 4 year old daughter skiing for the first time yesterday. Like any kid trying something new, they have a bit of fear, they're uncertain but once they get it right once, their confidence grows and they start having fun. Still she wasn't 100% confident to go down the bunny hill. Until... Another little girl came along, younger and smaller than her went sliding by her. Hopped on the kid size escalator, alone, and got off it and back down the hill again. We didn't even have to SAY nothing. Our daughter pushed our hands away, got on the escalator and copied exactly what the little girl had just done. Suddenly there was competition. She was modeling. She wanted to show off her skill as well. Are we Adults any different? Hell no. We all need to model someone better than us. It pushes us to do better. It opens our mind to new possibilities. If you allow us, let us be your physical fitness model. You too can have strength, flexibility and endurance. You too can be fit without having to watch everything you eat and spend countless hours in a gym. There is a better way. You'll find our efficient, proven, strength training system right here. Action without vision is a nightmare
Any exercise is not worth doing if you don't have a clear vision of what you want to accomplish, what you want to become, or how you want to feel. Why does a prize fighter wake up at 5 am to run? There's a reason why they call them prize fighters. They fight for the prize. The Money. Are they REALLY? You have to look at the big picture. What they want to do with the money. That's what drives them. Just like your fitness training program, the mere act of DOING the exercises isn't enough to keep you motivated. It won't keep you commited to the program. What is your VISION? What really gets your engine running? Is it saying that you want to lose 10 pounds? Does that really get you all fired up? Hardly. There has to be a bigger reason than that. You have to figure that out for yourself. What is YOUR reason for strength training.
When you're strength training remember:
Strength Training without vision is a waste.
Strength Training without counting reps is a waste.
Strength Training without keeping stats is a waste.
Strength Training without emotion is a waste.
Yeah that's right. Training without emotion is a waste.
The only way to include emotion in your workout is to attach a goal to it.
When you feel like quitting, that vision, that goal should appear in your mind. And you associate giving up on that exercise to failing at that goal.
The more emotional the goal the more intensity you will have in your workout. Thus, greater results.
Mine include being a great role model for my kids, building my business, helping as many people as possible get health conscious and to reach for self-mastery through the martial arts, being in top shape well into my 80's, being a symbol of excellence in everything I undertake.
When you have a strong vision finding the motivation to train and stay commited to your fitness program is a piece of cake.
Take your goals and our strength training circuits, pit them against each other and see if you end up giving up on them (goals) or you'll find a new found motivation to keep fighting to reach them. Master Yourself,

Massaging Reflex Points: An easy way to have more energy
Did you ever wonder why the japanese arts always train bare feet and the chinese arts wear shoes? Pretty simple. The japanese trained inside on tatamis and the chinese trained outside on rugged terrain. That's it! I enjoy both. Try to train at least once a week bare feet. By doing so, you strengthen your foot and simultaneously massage the reflex points under your feet without having to ask your spouse for one. I agree getting one feels WAY better but if no one is around at least you know what to do. Massaging the reflex points can be done without the use of your hands. Just one round of shadow punching and kicking bare feet gives your feet enough stimulation. Stimulating these reflex points are good for: - Improving circulation
- Increasing energy
- Eliminating or reducing pain
- Deep relaxation
- Detoxification
- Improved glandular function
- Stress relief
- Ability to sustain a high level of productive activity and an overall sense of well being.
Also when you finish your Station Training workout and you're ready to do your cool down using your Stretching and Flexibility tools it's the perfect time to stimulate those reflex points.
Whether you're doing Forward Bends, Upper Thigh Stretch or Inner Thigh Stretch, take some time to dig into those points with your fingers, palms and knuckles. You can press into them, you can squeeze them or slap them. But do it!
Master Yourself,
Sifu Martin
P.S. The reflex points like Stretching needs to be part of your training routine to maintain optimal health and energy. Remember, pressing into the reflex points is your way of doing a "systems check" or body inspection. If there is pain, stay on that point, you've found a weak spot.
