I hear and I forget
With 20 days into the new year, how are you doing? Did you follow my advice and knock off the easiest goals on your list so you get the ball rolling and in turn create a surge of energy and excitement for the accomplishment of your other goals? I hope you did. I can tell you, I did that, and man am I ready to get things done this year. It's just simply impossible to have different results if you do the same things, the same way, using the same words and repeating what you did last year. "If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got." Trust me, start with the little goals and expand from there. You'll build enough momentum and confidence to tackle your major goals. A famous poet once said: "I hear and forget. I see and hear, and I remember. However when I see, hear and DO, I understand and succeed." Keep your goals fresh in your mind's eye. Listen, read and stay inspired. Finally, ACT on your goals daily. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. This is YOUR year
January is my favorite month! You're given a chance to wipe the slate clean and attack the new year with optimism and gusto. It makes you feel like you're starting fresh, it makes you contemplate and imagine a long list of endless opportunities and possibilities. This is YOUR year. Clearly map out what you're going to do this year. Visualize and actually imagine NOW how you will feel when you've reached those goals. Express gratitude for what you have and what is to come. Figure out what drained you last year and what could of pushed you off course and correct it. Throw procrastination out the window. Refuse to settle for: "good enough". Acquire a burning desire for the attainment of your goals. The fastest way I've found to understand the concept of developing a burning desire, and this at record speed, is through a unique way of training we've incorporated in Fang Shen Do. Once understood, it's easily transferable to any other goals you might have. It's what I personally used as a kid to lay the foundation of discipline, follow through and a "never give up" kind of attitude. You can find out more about it here. Nutrition Tips
What does YOUR diet consist of? While in Beijing, I was brought to a famous street, where food stands are lined up side by side, each offering their unique specialty. This store was serving up something a little different. Live Scorpions. Skewered and still moving, people were lined up to sample these little critters. I guess compared to us here in the west, this particular food doesn't look good but IS good for you. While most of OUR food looks good but isn't good for you. This case is a little extreme but just look at the average North American's breakfast. It's either: 1) Skipped all together 2) Cereal 3) Sugar laced coffee and a donut 4) Or even better a cream cheese bagel and a muffin. Not to mention the junk that gets eaten during lunch time. Yumbo! Makes for a very productive day. Definitely not what our ancestors used to eat in the morning. Whatever happened to water, fruits, nuts and protein first thing in the morning? Large corporations are hard at work trying to tell you what to eat. Use common sense. Eat what can be picked from a tree, dug up from the ground, hunted or caught in the sea. Next time you visit the grocery store, focus on buying the food located on the outer walls of the store while avoiding most of the poisons found in the middle of it. That coupled with an effective, short, dynamic fitness program as taught in our Station Training Kits and you'll be all set. See what I mean here. Have some Tea?
I snapped this picture of the master's tea set while in China. The tea ceremony was a daily ritual. Actually 3 times a day to be exact. Most of you know the benefits of drinking green tea and its antioxidant and detoxifying effects. But did you know it's also a judge of character? At least that's how I felt. If I refused another cup I felt like it was a sign of disrespect. If I didn't drink from the cup the master had just given me I felt it was reflective of my unwillingness to learn. No, would mean: not so motivated. So I drank roughly 25 of them. The tea like the neigong training was a gift. Was I ready to receive it? Even if I didn't like tea (which I do) you can bet I would of drank it anyway. I know it's good for me. Just like the Neigong Training. At first some might think it's too hard or it's too this or it's too that. Not only is it good for your Chi Circulation but it'll strengthen your ligaments and loosen your joints as well. It's also very beneficial to your organs, namely your heart, liver and kidneys. I like knowing I'm doing something different than everybody else. Taking my health in my own hands and making it MY responsibility is a great feeling. Which is why I encourage you to do the same. Noboby takes your health at heart like you do. Do you? For me the dumbest thing in the world is eating the wrong foods, drinking too much, smoking and not exercising then expecting a broken health care system to come in and fix you when you created the problem in the first place. Staying healthy isn't rocket science. Smart choices in terms of what you shove down your throat, a bit of will power and an active lifestyle is a great way to start. If the above is taken care of, which most of you it should be if you're on my list, start developing yourself from the inside - out with regular Neigong practice. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. If you already own Neigong Foundation Work, smart move. Now start working from the outside - in with Station Training. Exercise Induced Nausea
Here's another unusual sign I saw in China I had never seen before.
And as Garth would say from the 1992 Smash Hit "Wayne's World": "If you're going to spew, spew into this" Believe it or not, every month or so, someone trying out a class in one of our schools needs to regurgitate or needs to sit down because they feel a bit of nausea. Actually it's quite normal. The common causes of exercise induced nausea are: - Working out on an empty stomach
- Over-training
- Dehydration
- Non-active lifestyle
It's very important when starting your martial art training that you go to your own pace. Even if you know you can push yourself harder, gradually work yourself up to that level by scaling back a bit on the level of intensity and exertion you put into each exercise. Then when your body is accustomed to the style of workout (i.e Intense Interval Training) you can start making significant gains in your level of fitness. That doesn't mean you'll never feel nauseous. Nausea can happen at any fitness level. It either means you failed to prepare your body correctly (food, water, etc...) before starting your workout or you know you pushed yourself to a whole other level. The best way to train is with a proven, progressive system which is designed to automatically increase your endurance threshold consistently over the course of 6 weeks. When that is achieved you're ready to step it up again. And again. And again. There's no limit to what your body can do. You just have to stick with it. No one wants to "spew" on their first training day that's for sure. If you do, let it be a big wake up call to finally get yourself in the best shape possible, make the right food choices and live a healthier lifestyle. Here's what we do. Secret to Progression
Seeing these old, used up stairs at the Great Wall reminded me of the secret of progression. Time and Repetition. Both lead to results depending on your point of view. Some activities and habits slowly destroy your body while others inject it with youth and vitality. Which ones are YOU engaging in? People often write in to ask how fast will they get results in their fitness level if they follow the instructions contained in our Station Training System, or "When will I be able to do a full split between two chairs the way Sijo, the Founder, is performing it on your Flexibility Series?". Some also ask: "When will I feel the chi coursing through my body as explained in your Neigong Program?". Same kind of questions I guess I asked myself when I took that picture: "How much time did it take to dent the slate on the Great Wall steps to erode them that way? Time and Repetition. Talking about how fit you will become or the levels of strength you will attain won't get you anywhere. Waiting to find the best time to finally start taking care of your health will lead to you never starting in the first place. Dreaming without doing is a waste of time. Every day that goes by where you fail to take action on your goals is an empty day. An opportunity lost to find fulfillment and a deep feeling of accomplishment in your life. Act now. If a kid can do it so can you
Here's a picture of my 5 year old daughter fooling around on Malibu Beach. I guess if you're not a parent this post might not interest you but... think again, I think you can find something of value here, read on. Before she was born I saw myself teaching her everything I could about physical fitness, confidence, endurance, flexibility, creativity, and fostering the many qualitites of a martial artist in her. As time went by, me and my spouse saw the positive influence implementing these qualities have had on her. Being only 5 years old, she can already perform Pull-Ups from a dead hang as well as Chin-Ups, while holding her chin above the bar for close to a minute. She can pump out 100 squats non-stop. 25 Nose to floor push-ups. Run 400m in under 3 minutes. Hold a hand stand. Hold a head stand. Bridge her body nose to floor with ease. And so on. In my line of work I hear alot of excuses from grown men or women for the reasons they haven't started to make their health and fitness a number one priority, or the reasons they had to put it on hold, or the: "I would start if I wasn't so damn busy" crock. Bull. If a kid can progress to a level of strength like I mentioned above, the same can be accomplished in your own training. You just need to start and there really is no limit to how strong, flexible, confident, or self-determined you can be. What really happpens between childhood and adulthood? Where does the enthusiasm go to? It's still there but I think it's misdirected into things that drain you of energy compared to being revitalized by them. The best way to start recharging your batteries is by engaging in daily activity and following a proven system to get amazing results. These strategies are the same I've used with my own kids to help build their level of fitness to where it is today. Let's get started now. It's Louse Time! The Calm after the Storm
If you're new to my list of focused, motivated, self-starters, Welcome. (if you're not new jump right away to today's lesson below) Every day I communicate to you the best ways to train and the kind of mindset it takes to get results either in your physical fitness or martial art training. Friday is always what I call: "Louse Time". Modeled after Bruce Lee's strategy in Enter the Dragon. You know that part where he's having tea with the government agent but he's disturbed by one of his students and Bruce Lee tells the agent: It's Louse Time! The agent replies with his British accent: "yes of course". Since I'm 6 years old that scene has always stuck with me and I'll be using that same strategy with YOU every week. Friday is where I share with you Life Lessons and Direction given to me by my dad (and Sifu) every Friday. Today's lesson is: The Calm after the Storm I have a very fond memory of being 6 years old and cooling down and meditating after a kung-fu class. My father explaining to us to: "Never, ever forget this feeling you have after your training. You'll need to recall on it at different points in your training life if you're ever going to accomplish any worth while goal in the martial arts." No matter how much you don't feel like training on a certain day or you're just distracted or busy with other things in your life, think of how good you feel after your workout and how you want to re-live that sense of accomplishment, positive energy, and emotional release over and over again. Sometimes getting yourself to train or making it through a tough workout might feel like being caught in a storm. No matter which obstacles you have to go through, whether created by you by ways of negative self-talk and making excuses to skip a workout or the actual difficulty of the routine you're following, there is calmness, joy, bliss, and a deep connection with yourself which occurs after each workout. That's why I never miss workouts and you shouldn't either, what you lose by not attending and completing them cost you... YOU. A chance to reflect on you. There is no B-S'ing yourself. You KNOW if you gave it all you had or slacked off. You feel if you've been consistent in your training by how you feel after them: strong and rejuvenated or weak and struggling. A chance to listen to your heartbeat and feel the pulse of your life. Do not miss workouts or martial art class it keeps you young, vibrant, and on the path of mastery. Sibok M P.S. An important training secret
I was browsing some old pictures the other day and came upon a few of them that brought back some interesting memories. One of them was a picture of my dad doing one-arm 2 finger push-ups back in 1977. I remember thinking when I first saw that picture: "How am I ever going to do that?" Or trying to do them in my basement when I was just a little kid and failing miserably, thinking my fingers were going to crack and bend backwards at the knuckles. "How could I ever become strong enough to lift my own bodyweight on two little fingers?" Many factors contributed to me eventually being able to perform this feat of strength, like following my father's advice, but there's also one thing that most people forget to include in their training. Chances are YOU have forgotten to implement this critical component in your training. Whenever you reach a level where you can easily perform a said exercise, you have to ask yourself: "What's next?" If you're working with weights it has to be an increase in weight. If you're running you have to cut your run time by 'X' time. The same is true with bodyweight exercises like the ones we incorporate in our Fang Shen Do training. This mentality is built into our training system and that's why it's such an effective way to train. If you're not already training with our Basic Strength Training Kit, what are you waiting for? If you already own the Basic System for the past 12 weeks why haven't you gotten the Intermediate level? Your strength and endurance depends on it. Keep the ball rolling. Force your body to adapt by constantly challenging it. There's just no other way to progress and get stronger but by asking yourself: "what's next?" Put yourself to the test and see what kind of results you can get, you never know, with the right intensity and consistency doing those 2 finger push-ups just might become too easy and leave you asking the inevitable question. Master Yourself, Sibok Martin P.S. Instead of figuring it out by yourself and spending years refining and deciding which exercises are best to build upon so you keep on progressing why not just pick up one of our Strength Training Kits today. Easiest thing you'll ever do. Labels: 2 Finger push-Ups, Fang Shen Do, Fitness, Sijo Jacques Patenaude, Station Training

Talk is Cheap
Hope you had a great weekend, the weather was pristine here in Casselman. Spent all day with my family, my immediate family and kung-fu family yesterday. It was refreshing to play our national sport: Hockey The family that plays and trains together, stick together. I surely couldn't of done what I did this weekend without the help of my kung-fu training. The endurance, the speed, the never give up attitude, and coordination. Just my break-falls and rolls alone saved me from injury. It's always when I play other sports that I realize how kung-fu helped lay a strong sport foundation and if you're like me you've surely come to the same conclusion. I've said it before, everyone should have at least 3 years of martial art training. Above all else, martial arts should teach you about taking action. Thinking, talking, or writing about something is a start but in the end it's all about the DOING. Something the UFC guys didn't do Saturday night if you happened to watch a few of the matches. Maybe YOU also want to start something, you think about it, you've told someone close to you you were going start it but you DIDN'T. Kinda like Fitness. Is it something you just talk or think about or do you commit some time each day to get stronger in that area? Talk really is cheap. Action is king. It reminds me of the saying: "I can't hear what you're saying, your actions speak louder than your words" When will it be the right time to get in shape? Never. The time will never be just right. The more you wait, the more you won't feel like it, you'll say: "maybe tomorrow", the mind will always find ways to distract you away from taking action. The easiest way I've found to get in the fitness habit is to stick to 1 minute exercises. You can exercise for one minute right? An interesting thing happens after a minute, your body craves ... more. Your body craves oxygen. If you've been living a pretty inactive lifestyle and suddenly start, your body will start feeling good very quickly. That's why before you know it, 1 minute will turn into 10 minutes and beyond. We've broken it down for you in a simple system you can start using right away. It's been at the center core of our martial art program for the past 35 years with great results. See what I mean here. Add 30 minutes to your day
Time. We all have time right? How are YOU using yours? The quality of your life is in direct proportion to how you use your time. The Choices you make. And what you CHOOSE to focus on. You and I are like managers, we have 24 hours in a day to work with and our success depends on how well those hours and minutes are spent. How many minutes and hours a day do you think you waste doing something that either, doesn't get you closer to your goals or sucks the life out of you, leeching precious energy that could be used more productively to improve yourself on a personal level. Let's look at areas where we can cut, add, or restructure your time in such a way to give you more time to focus on one area you should diligently concentrate on: Personal Development. Let's take your morning for example. Could you wake up 30 minutes earlier than you are right now to focus on personal development. Could you end your workday 30 minutes later to focus on personal development? What about going to bed 30 minutes later while you work on your personal development.? Could you use half of your lunch break to focus on personal development? What skills could you acquire if you put this strategy into play. An extra 2 hours a day to invest in yourself. 60 hours a month. 720 hours a year. What if half of those hours were commited to physical fitness, what kind of body would you have at the end of the year. And what if the other half was spent listening or reading empowering books on a subject of interest that would make you better at your job, inspire you to start your own business or learn a new skill or language? Add 30. It's the best thing you can do for yourself. When you think of it, these minutes will get spent anyways, why not be master of your destiny? Just like how we breathe one breath at a time, in our Station Training, we take it one 1 minute at at time. It's one of the most efficient ways to train, you won't see the time go by and before you know you'll have put in a great workout. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. Getting fit doesn't have to take lots of time, you just need to know key strategies and follow a proven system. Labels: Fitness, Focus, Short Workouts, Station Training, Time

It's Louse Time! Discipline Equals Something
During the past 2 weeks the weather has been affecting my high speed signal, stopping me from sending my daily tips as I usually do, my apologies, I'm already looking into several solutions. Today's lesson is: Discipline Equals Something That word "Discipline" is like music to my ears but I know for some it has a negative connotation. From the Latin origin, "Disciplina" meaning "Instruction" and also from the root "Discere" meaning "To Learn". Discipline means to follow a particular "Code of Conduct" or to adhere to a certain "Order". No matter how tempting an extravagant pleasure may seem, The Code is there to keep you on track for the fitness goals you've set for example. When talking about Self-Discipline what is YOUR code of conduct? How do YOU maintain order in your life? What kind of standards have you set for yourself? Our body is constantly giving us feedback. Some things we do make us feel great, others we know even before engaging in them we'll feel like crap the day after. How much Pain can you take before you realize some behaviours are bad for you? Some people it's alot. You don't need me to tell you: "You need to stay physically active and strong", "The quality of food you ingest is your source of fuel, no amount of exercise will outbeat a bad diet" and "How you FEEL reflects the quality of your life". The Code we use for Fitness lies in this unique Fitness Kit. Check it out here Master yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Louse Time, Station Training

Never too Young, Never too Old
Many people are limited by either one of those ideas: "Too young" or "too old". Are you secretly telling yourself that? When it comes to your physical fitness, the time is NOW. This is something I wanted my kids to understand at a very young age. Knowing that kids imitate their parents I make sure to be active whenever they are around me. My youngest daughter (17 mths old) holds a one minute hang on the hanging bar. All of my kids were hanging from a hanging bar when they were about 15 mths old. My oldest daughter holds handstands and my son works with Kettlebells. If you think you're too old to start training, think again. If my little ones can do what they do, there are no excuses. It's a very rewarding habit. You just need to start. Start where you are and build from there. Research shows that we are genetically almost 99% identical to our cave man ancestors. So why is obesity reaching epidemic (should I say pandemic) levels? We're ingesting some foods that were never meant to be eaten and a severe drop in physical activity. Our ancestors were always on the move, hunting, building, gathering wood and stone. If they sat around and did what most people today do in a day (which is not a lot) they wouldn't of survived. Give yourself and your family the gift of fitness this holiday season, it really is the gift that keeps on giving. Here's an easy way to ease into the fitness habit, it's a fitness kit that anyone can follow no matter where you are fitness wise. Get yours here.

Never rest on your laurels
Yesterday we re-connected with Nick Hewitson, World Muay Thai Champion, with over 100 fights to his credit without ever suffering a loss. In past blogs I had mentioned we had met him while touring in Europe earlier this year. A very nice man and very knowledgeable in his field. What he teaches is very authentic, brutal and challenging. I realize this is not for everybody. That's why a special program will be offered in our schools for those who want to step up to that level. Most Muay Thai schools today offer a very watered down version of the art. To quote Nick: "Alot of people today just want to wear the nice shorts and pretend they're doing Muay Thai". I found it inspiring that even after retiring from fighting professionally, he's still training, still tough, still in shape and still passionate about the art. Naturally we gravitated towards him since he shares some of the same beliefs about training intensity, assholes on forums who talk a big game, belly masters and the like. You can never rest on your laurels and that goes for you too. Always challenge yourself and seek out new ways to push yourself past certain thresholds. Without a doubt if it wasn't for the training we regularly subject ourselves to with our Station Training we wouldn't of been able to complete the drills he asked us to perform. Since we train to end a confrontation in 30 seconds or less, a minor adjustment had to be done to last 4 minute plus rounds. Once again it reinforces the element I've been talking about for a while now, Conditioning First, once that is in place you can make everything else happen. Train in as many ways possible, change it up, make sure that what you're doing are full body workouts, train to exhaustion, switch intervals from 1 minute through 5 minutes, and train your will to never give up. Those are the core elements of Station Training. Everything has been laid out for you in our Strength Training Kits. Training the way we do leaves you ready to tackle any physical activity and gives you the ability to adapt to any sport or workout. Be careful not to do "Too much, Too soon". Station Training is the perfect way to build your endurance in such a way that is progressive, at your own pace, and already tested for you. Maybe you don't want to step in the ring with a Muay Thai fighter but you want to make damn sure you're in the best possible shape and that you're commited to stay strong, healthy and vibrant for as long as you can. Beating the Fall downer
I peeked outside this morning to see how the leaves on the trees are already starting to change color. Reminds me of people and their cycles. How some people start losing their pizzazz, motivation, vitality and enthusiasm for taking care of their health just like how trees lose their bright green colors and shed their leaves in the fall. After losing their drive, many months go by and eventually (maybe) they get motivated again to re-start training and taking care of their health. Usually continuing this weird behavior all their life unable to stick with a training program. Spring sees Nature's re-birth but you don't need to wait until spring to get back in shape. You need to maintain the momentum created this summer to keep you motivated all year round. Seasons can change on the outside but what you feel inside should never change. I've created some powerful associations yet again this summer. Associations that will keep me motivated in times of lazyness and wanting to brush off an unwanted training day. Ex students making a comeback
This past week I've been speaking to most of our owners and got similar feedback from a lot of them concerning ex-students. There's been a flood of them coming back. One student in particular was my father's very first student in a church basement of Ottawa, he's now training in St-Leonard. Some say they always wanted to come back, for some it's something my dad said that stuck with them, many bring their kids into the school to get them started, others realized how good they felt when they were training and want to get that feeling back again, or some tried something else but weren't satisfied. Some were gone for a year or two and can't help but notice how things have evolved. Although the core principles of our system have not changed, the drills, the training strategies, the curriculum is in constant evolution and will always keep on evolving. One thing you get when you're a part of our school is a guarantee you'll be learning nothing but the cutting edge in physical training, self-defense, and personal development. If you're one of our ex students and feel like starting back again but wish to be prepared for your comeback, pick up a station training kit so you can build your endurance and strength in less than 30 days so you can get back to training the way you used to. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. I know alot of our ex students are still subscribed to my list but now live too far away like Vancouver, France, Manitoba, or Costa Rica. I'll do it tomorrow...
Today I start with a story my father shared with me a while ago. It involves a spiritual master that was asked by one of his followers the following question: "Master, in your opinion what is one of man's worst sins?" The master pondered for a while, until he finally gave an answer: "Lazyness" That story has always stuck with me. The "Lazyness Virus" seems to be attacking alot of people these days. Lazyness is to be "unwilling to do any work or make an effort". Is there any area in your martial art training you've been neglecting? Is there anything you KNOW you should be doing but you're not? The following, in my opinion, are some classic cases of lazyness, especially when all of them can be taken care of with a little bit of effort: Unwillingness to stop smoking Unwillingness to get and stay in shape Unwillingness to change bad eating habits It requires far less effort to make positive changes in those areas NOW than to wait and see the long term damaging effects if you neglect any of these 3 common problem areas. Refuse to be lazy in the area of physical conditioning, our fitness program is so fast paced and dynamic that there's no time to get lazy and "put-off" your training by saying "I'll do it tomorrow". We all know where that phrase will lead you: Lazyville. Get your personal station training kit here. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Station Training

Baloney! That is a quote from George Bernard Shaw. I totally disagree with him. Teaching takes you from being average to pretty decent in no time flat. Anyone who has taught will tell you they greatly improved their own ablities by teaching it to someone else. It forces you to know the material, you need to be able to demonstrate it, makes you verbalize it, which in turn guarantees you'll never forget it. A good teacher realizes he can learn as much from the student as the student does from him. You now know another method to staying motivated this year with your goals. I told you I wouldn't let you down! The secret is in Teaching. As soon as you get our strength training kits, call up a friend, wife, husband, son, daughter and show them what you've learned. You'll quickly get a better understanding of the exercises and will help you master your own technique at the same time. But first, you need to have something to show them, something of value. Show them your new Strength training kit. Pick it up right here. Aim Higher Together, Sifu Martin P.S. Having a training partner is another way to stay motivated this year. Get one now. Is this what we've become?
I'm disgusted. You know how the stats show that Americans and Canadians are over-weight. You wonder if it's true or not or if maybe they're exagerating. They're not. We're sitting in this room where there's over 100 people. I'm being very observant as I always am, and I see the food choices they're making are just plain stupid. I can't believe it. No wonder they're fat as they are and they look old and tired but they're not old they're in their 30's! Donuts, Candy, Coke, Danish, Brownies, Large size Starbucks coffee for BREAKFAST. You must be thinking what I'm thinking: "Breakfast of Champions" right? People need to be educated! Why are they doing this to their Million Dollar Machine? First thing we did when we got to the Hotel is find a Grocery Store. Do not eat at the hotel. It's over-priced and they don't have your best interest at heart when it comes to healthy food choices. Get fruits that have a high anti-oxydant level, nuts, water, vegetables high in Vitamin C & E. And so on. I feel great. Strong. Light. Awake. I can't imagine eating what the others are eating. Some people wonder why they find out they have type 2 diabetes when they get a routine blood test. Most people don't know. The main problem is people eat too much sugar. Are you eating correctly? If you're following our system, I hope you are being very smart about what you ingest. You've all heard the saying : You are what you eat. Now, this is only what I see. Let alone what they do after the seminar that bothers me. What about strength training? I wonder how many of them did something similar to station training in the morning. NONE. How many of them did breathing exercises to increase circulation. NONE. How many stretched to loosen up and get more flexible. NONE. How many did isometric contractions to increase strength and digestion functions. NONE. Most people don't know that they don't know and I just find that very sad. If you're on this list it means you're not in the dark about this and you take your health very seriously. Knowing this, helps me calm down and realize that we can't help everybody, we can only help the ones that want to help themselves. The first step to continually improve yourself physically is through our strength training programs. Make the right choices. You can find them all right here.
