FSD Training Day a Success!
Well, as always, this year's event was bigger and better than last year. An amazing turnout, informative workshops and focused participants, what else could you ask for? With so many things happening all at once it was special for us but also for the students to have an awesome, out of the ordinary Saturday afternoon. A big THANK YOU to the students and people who got involved to make this event a success!
Here are a couple of snapshots from the event. Enjoy!
Sijo, our founder sharing his philosophies and insights about life, happiness, getting what you want, becoming a leader, and discovering what you were born to do.
Simultaneously we held our Kung-Fu Olympics for kids and gave out new belt promotions at the event headed by Sifu Stephane Patenaude.
We reserved 2 full gyms for the event, one side kids , one side Adults. The kids said it rocked! Obviously it did!
My sister, Sifu Christine, also had a chance to work one on one with the women of FSD.
Women's Self-Defense and Women's Fitness are 2 of her specialties. No one's going to mess with this group!
Sifu Patrick running through our Sanshou Drills. Integrating our Street, No rules Self-Defense System in a sport like Kickboxing was no easy task but with the success of our fighters in various competitions recently, they have shown the transition to be seamless and quite successful.
Events like this are great for kids. A major confidence booster. Offering the right guidance as well as building leadership skills is what real martial arts is all about.
Seeing so many people take fitness and health so seriously makes me really happy. Mastering the body and mind should be on everyone's priority list.
With the right instructor learning is fun and informative. Actually doing the techniques is easy and makes you realize "You can do this too!"
Spending some time teaching elements of the stick through the various ranges and what can be done in each of them opens your mind to the endless possibilities.
The day ended with our Submission Grappling Competition. Some guys fought some tough matches. Congratulations to Mathieu Lemay for Winning the competition!
I'll have other major announcements coming soon about Grappling and upcoming events related to that very shortly, Stay tuned!
There were several hundred pictures, I will upload more in the coming days.
Master Yourself,
Sibok M
P.S. Are you excited just by looking at these pictures? I am. Use that motivation and train extra hard today!

Advocate for Martial Arts
As you might of realized by now I'm a pretty strong advocate for taking up martial art practice. And for good reason. I've had superb results in many areas of my life all because I'm a martial artist, specifically, because of the qualities that one develops by practicing the arts. I assure you the same results are waiting for you. IF... And this a big if. If you find the right school along with the right instructor. For me personally, the way I was taught was, martial arts was more than just learning how to throw punches and kicks it was a tool you could you use to improve and bring balance in all areas of your life. This balance should extend to all areas: Your fitness level and physical appearance. Your relationship with your spouse, kids and friends. Your Character and Attitude. Your level of personal and financial success. Showing Respect in the highest Form: Self-Respect. Which starts with making the right food choices and treating your body as the priceless possession that it is. The total package so to speak. It really is as simple as that. No need to over-complicate. Take most people's fitness programs. Alot of people need to always "change it up" so they don't get bored. Or they feel the need to discover the next revolutionary piece of equipment that will get them the results they're after. But right from the start they're thinking is flawed and the same is true with most people starting martial art practice. It's not the techniques or the equipment that will get you results. The right thinking will. This is where the right instructor comes into play. The right instructor will help instill in you the right values that make everything else possible. Patience, Respect, Honesty, Commitment, Discipline, Character and Focus. Arm yourself with these qualities and there's nothing you'll start and not finish. You can learn all the techniques you want, become proficient using any piece of equipment, all of which can change from time to time. What never changes are the foundational qualities you must acquire to make everything else happen at double the speed with less effort on a consistent basis. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. It's Louse Time! Repetition vs Modeling
If you're new to my list of focused, motivated, self-starters, Welcome. (if you're not new jump right away to today's lesson below)
Every day I communicate to you the best ways to train and the kind of mindset it takes to get results either in your physical fitness or martial art training. Friday is always what I call: "Louse Time". Modeled after Bruce Lee's strategy in Enter the Dragon. You know that part where he's having tea with the government agent but he's disturbed by one of his students and Bruce Lee tells the agent: It's Louse Time! The agent replies with his British accent: "yes of course". Since I'm 6 years old that scene has always stuck with me and I'll be using that same strategy with YOU every week.
Friday is where I share with you Life Lessons and Direction given to me by my dad (and Sifu) every Friday.
Today's lesson is: Repetition vs Modeling These 2 methods will certainly get you to where you want to go. You may need to do both. But you don't have to. One method leads you down a solemn road of trial and error, set-backs, frustration, pain, and hard work. The other method, the superior method gets you the same results in half the time. All you have to do is follow the plan and whatever you're looking for is within your grasp. Results come quickly and makes you wonder why you didn't follow this method in the first place. You've guessed it. Modeling is the preferred method for accelerated learning. Certainly, the old saying of: "Repetition is the mother of skill" holds some merit but modeling someone who already has what you want and in turn mimicking exactly what they did to get it is a guaranteed winner. This weekend you'll have the opportunity to do just that. All of our school owners, Sifus and students are converging in Casselman this Saturday morning at 10:30 am for a day of training and advanced learning. This event is open to all FSD Students and non students alike. Why should you attend? We try to organize these kinds of events as many times as possible throughout the year but still, it's not enough. Very seldomly will you have all of FSD's Top instructors, not to mention our Founder Sijo Jacques Patenaude all present in the same venue to help you advance your skills in Weapons, Grappling, Energy Work, Trapping Hands, Conditioning and Athleticism, Sanshou Sparring Drills and the list goes on. Priced at 30$, it's a no-brainer. To reserve your spot and register click here. Spring Cleaning with Martial Arts
Spring rejuvenation is upon us. Do you feel it? When spring comes around, I can't help but be reminded of the same feeling you will get if you start our martial art program. Like spring, you will feel a re-birth. Energy which was just sitting there dormant and waiting to be utilized is finally directed constructively and positively. You will also get to notice details about yourself. You might rediscover abilities you once possessed. Or you find out how much you've lost in some areas which in turn will motivate you to double your efforts and get back on track. Once aware of the need to preserve your body it transcends and affects your mood as well. The Feeling of being AliveWhen you feel your heart racing, or you're out of breath, it makes you realize how lucky you are to feel these two necessities of life. The self-awareness that comes from meditating and the way it releases stress should be on everyone's daily to-do list. Your body like the leaves and landscape transforming as we speak will grow stronger, firmer, building new muscle, strengthening organs, ligaments and tendons. Like spring showers it's time to wash away bad habits and get to work on your internal and external spring clean-up. Let's get started right now!Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. If you're like me and you're at the 'maintaining & expanding stage' of your martial art training (not getting started), you seriously need to look at harnessing and developing your internal power through Neigong Practice, an internal form of kung-fu. Self-Defense for Women
A couple of weeks ago, Julie Mignot, the chief instructor of our St-Leonard School hosted a special clinic for women only. There's something about a woman being able to defend herself and not take any crap from anybody that turns me on. Seeing women first enter the school kinda shy, timid and self-conscious during their first few classes to eventually see them hit the gloves with confidence and watching their bodies transform as well as their attitudes is quite a sight. Makes you wonder why all women don't invest a bit of time and effort in at least learning the basics of personal protection? And this goes for men too: "They don't know that they don't know" Better to find out that you "don't know" in a controlled environment than to find out when it's too late and you're faced with a real attacker. "In a controlled environment, learning is both fun and challenging. It's okay to make mistakes so long as you don't freeze up and remember to keep attacking." "Certain positions can be intimidating, especially if you've been pushed to the ground and find yourself in an inferior position, the fact that you've been there before in your training means it won't be so much of a shock if you ever find yourself there." Personal Protection is a skill like any other. In my opinion it's right up there with Reading and Writing. If you'd like to know more about Personal Protection or know someone who might benefit from learning these skills, let me suggest you get them started with my sister's brand new DVD on the subject of Women's Self-Defense. You never know it might save someone's life one day or yours. Grab a copy here. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Fang Shen Do, Julie Mignot, Sibok Martin Patenaude, Women's Self-Defense

Everything is Kung-Fu
Do you recognize this statement? This is one of Jackie Chan's lines in the upcoming "The Karate Kid" Movie. My focus has always been to live by this statement. When you practice martial arts, whether you're aware of it or not, puts you on a path of self-mastery. Some never stick with it long enough to see and feel the effects of their training transfer to other areas of their life. Others though, who possess self-discipline, commitment, and follow through, reap the rewards and start noticing the clear difference one feels by staying a martial artist. When hours of repetition and dedicated focus are put into mastering various techniques, it doesn't take long that you catch yourself using the same techniques to master other skills outside the dojo. Holding yourself to this high standard is infectious, in a good way. It will spread to everything you do. Why would a student invest so much time harnessing the power of patience, awareness, balance, focus, visualization, repetition, consistency, and goal setting to become a great martial art practitioner and not want to improve all other areas of their life? The answer is: They all do. The one's that maintain their training all naturally gravitate towards a want to improve all other areas. Like renovating a house. Don't be fooled by your spouse in thinking: "We'll just renovate the bathroom" Soon after you'll want to renovate the kitchen. Then the living room, the master bath, etc... And there's nothing wrong with that as long as you do the same with your most prized possession: Your body and mind. What are you doing to constantly upgrade your skills? Either you become a martial artist today and get started in one of our schools and start reading FSD's Prime Literature. If you're already a member or training in martial arts browse the product section and see what new skills you can acquire and add to your repertoire. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. If you're not growing, you're dying. Avoid stagnation. Focus on constant and never ending improvement, only this will keep you on the path of self-mastery. I don't like getting frustrated
I can't always answer every single question that comes my way individually but I can post them on the FSD blog or include my answers in my daily e-mail blasts so everyone can benefit from the answers. Here's a good one with an answer you won't expect. Here goes: "When I'm training at my dojo and I do a kick or a punch wrong over and over again I get frustrated and outta focus. How can I get back into focus and relax. (I don't like getting frustrated)" Thanks, K --- Here's where a lot of people get it wrong. Frustration is GOOD. Just think of all the inventions and technology surrounding us today. All of it was created out of frustration. Frustration is a great emotion. Embrace it. Feeling frustration, anger or emotional intensity actually helps your performance and can help lead to better results. Take legendary Tennis Player John McEnroe. Was he frustrated and emotional? He didn't let IT control him he used IT to maintain laser like focus. There are examples of this in every sport. The most emotional players are always the most successful ones. And the same is true in business. The most emotional business person will always get more things accomplished than the one who's sleeping at the switch and never dares let out any steam. And lastly, in Relationships. Sometimes you love each other, sometimes you hate each other, that's totally normal. Relationships are far more interesting and passionate when you're comfortable enough to express negative feelings without fear of losing each other in the process. Feeling frustration? Good. That's your mind and body's way of giving you feedback. Try harder. Focus better and show yourself what you can do. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Get to that Frustration zone in everything you do. This feedback tells you you're out of your comfort zone and growth is just around the corner. I remember feeling that way when I first started my Neigong Training, this frustration lead me to reach high level rep counts (in the thousands), a trip to China, becoming a full-fledged disciple and being given the task to spread Neigong around the world. Not bad for a little frustration? Challenge yourself today. Want to do something different? Give Neigong Training a try today. Have a Great Day?
Have a great day! No, No, No. Have a great year! Again, no, no, no. Have a great decade! Sorry, no! I want a great LIFE! Whatever road you're on right now in your life, is it the right one? Are you happy and fulfilled? Only you can answer that question. As a starting point I strongly believe you should first find out what you love to do (my father takes it a step further and asks what you were BORN to do) and make a living from it. This way work doesn't feel like work at all and most of your time is spent on creation and developing new products your customers can use. I wanted to give you a heads up today about major improvements and new products being released very shortly at FSD Central. With over 30 new titles coming to the products section I still wanted your opinion on what you would like to see covered in our extensive martial art library. Let me know which product would best help you improve your skills and I'll get right on it to produce it for you. Thank you for taking the time to answer and sharing your thoughts. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. You don't have to be a student of FSD to answer. Many people are on my list from different backgrounds and have various goals in the martial arts and about fitness in general. Your feedback is appreciated. Live out of Mindsight not Eyesight
"The most complete map in the world won't take you anywhere unless you know where you are." This particular statement cannot be ignored. Do you know where YOU are? Without this critical information there's no chance for advancement and self-improvement. On a weekly basis you should be tracking where you are, and daily would be the ideal. Whether this is for fitness or business goals, knowing where you are simply makes it way clearer to know where you need to go. I know most people know this but are you doing it? When you hit daily goals, it creates a surge of energy and enthusiasm as well as momentum. Momentum to take you through this year and others to come. In all areas of your life, where are you headed? Are you drifting along haphazardly reacting to life or actively creating your destiny? From a Martial Art standpoint, skill, strength and flexibility doesn't just happen without dedicated effort and paying close attention to what 's working and what isn't in your training. Conversely, relationships don't last forever without romance, communication, adventure and honesty. A business organization doesn't stay alive and thriving for over 30 years without constantly re-inventing itself, re-investing profits and finding better ways to serve their customers. For each area of your life (physical, mental, emotional, spiritual, family, and financial) put them under the microscope, think of it as research, just that the test subject is YOU. Live your life out of Mindsight not Eyesight. Mindsight means to live out of your imagination while Eyesight means to live out of memory. The past does not equal the future. You are responsible for what you create, make it amazing and worthwhile! Bodies Exposition Review in Montreal
During last week's March Break I had a chance to share special moments with my kids and family. One thing that really stood out was what we did on Saturday. This one thing, I can't get out of my head. I mean, I've always been interested in the human body, nutrition and ways to stay happy, healthy, and vibrant. But having a chance to actually see the human body from inside and see the effects smoking can have on your health and lungs, the fragility of the brain and nervous system, the importance of choosing wisely what you eat as well as engaging in daily exercise and the positive effects it has on your circulatory system was AMAZING. I'm talking about the BODIES EXPOSITION in Montreal. If someone goes through the exhibits and doesn't quit smoking on the spot and seriously starts eating right and ditching the junk food, I don't know what will. What happens in our bodies on a daily basis is nothing short of a miracle. The perfect balance and harmony of the various systems is mind boggling. Yet many people choose to purposely destroy the master control (i.e. the Brain) with mind altering drugs? Or some choose to lead a sedentary lifestyle when one's body can be twisted and articulated in thousands of positions, equipped with muscles, tendons and ligaments that will adapt to loads and retain memory of those movements so they become easier with time. Apart from the physical wonders of our body and what it can do mechanically it's interesting to note what movement can do for our mind, our energy and our emotions. Ultimately adding Quality to your Life. You've probably heard the saying: "The more motion you undertake the more emotion you will create" I get my best ideas while in movement, training, or maintaining my martial art skills. It connects me in a way that no other sport can. This is why I urge you take up martial art training as the sport of choice, not only to get in shape but to optimize bodily function, maintain mental alertness, and stretch your imagination when it comes to what you can accomplish and create in your own life. Priceless Life Lessons
Every year on March 10th I reflect on where I started and how far I've come. Even though my father started my training at the same time I started walking. March 10th, 1985 marks the date of my first official exam ( i.e White Sash) in my martial art training. The first rank is always memorable as it marks the beginning of your journey, and if taught right, what you learn at this level will serve you well throughout your ascension to Black Belt and beyond. In September 1984, my very first class, I learned an important lesson that will surely stick with me for the rest of my life. Lately I've been getting many flashes from my childhood, like one of my past posts about the split test my dad had me do when I was 11 years old. Have you had these happen to you? I'm sure you have. We all have them but I tend to focus on the ones where I learned something important or that I was successful at doing. That way, I can use it to get myself in the right state, physical and mental in the present moment when undertaking a task or project I'm working on. These are every important for your self-image and using past successes to fuel your goals and dreams in the now as well as give you confidence knowing you can accomplish them because of those successful past experiences truly is priceless. So what did I learn on that faithful day? My dad had us all lined up and ready to start class. Since I was training and watching classes way before I ever did an official one I already knew how to start the class (a very short form to get the class started that consists mostly of testing your balance and coordination) and I wasn't shy about letting the guy know in front of me that I knew it. At that point, my father gave me the "LOOK". That one look, with no words exchanged taught me a lesson that I would carry on in my training even to this day. I don't think any of the other 6 year olds got it but I did. "Whatever you think you know, you don't" "When it's time to talk, talk" "When it's time to train, train." "There's always something to learn if you just pay attention well enough". That right there has served me alot in my 26 years of training. This one lesson as well as many others have been very valuable in all areas of my life. All this to say: Use your PAST and get back to basics. Attack everything you do with a beginner's mind. Not only will you have more fun doing what it is you do, you'll learn faster, your enthusiasm and passion will soar and you'll get a different perspective on what you think you know. Stay on Top of ...
YOU! Every morning. During the day and before retiring at night. Stay on top of You. Monitor what you do, what you think and what you feel. Approach it the same way a drill sergeant stays on top of his recruits. Just like that classic scene in Full Metal Jacket. Imagine if you kept such a tight control over your appetite, your level of activity during the day, your thoughts, and your level of unwavering commitment to the goals you've set. How would you feel? Looking at levels of obesity in North America in both children and adults, clearly, many people have failed to stay on top of themselves. Although there's no other time than now to start taking care of your health, if you ask me and I think you'll agree, it's better not to wait until you've passed that point of no return to start doing something about it. Have enough foresight to not wait to be diagnosed with Diabetes to start watching your sugar intake and exercising regularly. Same thing for lung cancer, avert the dreaded news by quitting the habit of smoking now, not later. Control inflammation (the major cause of artherosclerosis) in your body by eating the right foods and supplementing with the right nutrients today instead of making it a priority later if you're lucky enough to survive a heart attack. Listen to your body, pay attention to how you feel, make a mental check when you retire at night about the healthy choices you've made during your day, sleep peacefully and wake up with discipline to take care of your machine by staying on top of you today and every day to avoid massive pain later. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. An easy way to stay on top of you is by training smart. Our 60 second training method boasts results in record time. One less thing to think about. Get started here. Full Split with No Warm-Ups
Back in 1989 my dad started what we called back then "Special Classes". These classes were reserved for advanced students and were a way to test a whole bunch of different concepts and techniques from a wide variety of martial arts systems to see if they worked. The gamut of arts we experimented with was extensive and none of them were excluded. There are many lessons I learned during these sessions and one that comes to mind is the one on "Having no mind". Let me explain. At one of these classes my father was explaining this concept and how adults will sometimes over analyze and question "why should I do this" or" why should I do that" either in their heads or to their partner. And through this analysis, you've heard the statement: "Being caught in the paralysis of analysis" settles in. This analysis brings self-doubt, hesitation, and fear. At that moment, my dad put me on the spot. I was only 11 years old at the time. Just a kid. What my father went on to explain is when you're a child you don't question like adults do, you just DO. No questions asked. No excuses. No negative self-talk. No procrastination. He says: "Mart" (Everyone called me that before I was ever made a Sifu) "Come up here" I didn't know what the hell he was going to have me do and the class was packed with grown men staring at me. "Do a full split to the floor, and Daniel and Christian will lift you by your feet from each side, straight in the air and hold your balance". I had never done that before but that day I did. My goal isn't to share this story with you so you can say: "Wow you're great!" On the contrary, I just want you to know that you're great. You have the potential to do anything you set your mind to. BELIEVE and it can be achieved. Instead of finding all the reasons why you can't do something, Focus on doing the THING and with repetition you'll master the thing. Reach the point of No Mind, have total confidence in yourself and just go for it. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Stretching is a great mind challenge. That's why I enjoy it so much. We've compiled some of the best stretching exercises you can do to reach total flexibility and finesse on DVD. Listen as I go through other important techniques I use to acquire, maintain, and not lose your flexibility. It's a great resource that no martial artist or athlete should be without. Get it here. I already know that!
Zig Ziglar's answer to this all too common statement is: "Maybe so but what have you done about it!" Think about that. All the things that you know but didn't act upon. Or the things you were going to get around to doing when the kids would be all grown up or when you lose X amount of weight. Maybe it was when you were going to graduate or when you got that raise you were going to do that something you always wanted to do, but never did. "Faith without works is dead" No matter what you know, in the end, ACTION is the only thing that counts. Have you ever met people who seemed to know it all? Do you fall into that trap sometimes? I know for me as soon as I catch myself thinking: "I already know that" I add the words: "But I want to learn more about it" Learning is a journey not a destination that's for sure. And the journey is much more enjoyable when you face each experience with an open mind and child like enthusiasm. You already know you should cut sugar, avoid processed food, eliminate soft drinks and spend more time strengthening your mind and body through exercise, getting in the habit of performing deep breathing techniques to cleanse your body while bending and twisting your body for maximum flexibility. If you know it then DO it! If you need help in those areas I'd love to help. Here's a list of products that can help bridge the gap between learning something and actually implementing it. Your Greatest Mission
We both have an important mission you and I. Do you know what it is? This quote pretty much sums it up: "Men go forth to wonder at the heights of mountains, the huge waves of the sea, the broad flow of the rivers, the vast compass of the ocean, the courses of the stars, and they pass by THEMSELVES without wondering." ~ St-Augustine How amazing is it to be here, fully conscious, with the ability to create the reality we wish and experience life to the fullest. Do you realize the amazing potential you have locked inside? Your most important mission, responsibility, or job is developing, knowing and challenging... YOU. I happen to like the martial art path because of the fighting spirit it instills in you and the self-discipline you need to stick with it. Many paths can keep you on the path of self-mastery. Find yours and be dedicated to it. How sad would it be to go through life and only realize when it's too late what you could of really accomplished if you only took the time to realize how special and lucky you are? Just something to keep in mind and ponder about as you start your week off. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Fang Shen Do, Fighting Spirit, Life Lessons, Purpose, Sibok Martin Patenaude

Something us men take for granted
As many of you know I live in a Japanese Style Pagoda which boasts a 3500 square foot training area which is also our studio for filming most of our training DVDs. Every week on Wednesday I hear the crack of leather, deep breathing, feet shuffling around and women moaning and groaning to do one thing: Have the body they've always dreamed of. It's not easy to stay in shape. Look good after having had kids or drop unwanted pounds. Something us men take for granted. My sister, Sifu Christine has been drilling groups of ladies in our various schools to do just that. To get women off their butt and working towards harnessing their inner strength. In many ways women are stronger than us (yes I hate to admit it, but I couldn't see myself giving birth or handling the stresses of raising my kids on my own) Some need to be reminded of this strength and what better way to do that than to start training. She's designed a unique way of training to help women get started from where they are right now when it comes to their fitness level and get them ready for more intense workouts within the span of 5 weeks. When she created these DVDs she had 3 areas she wanted to develop: 1. Pre-Natal Fitness. Most women gain the most weight while pregnant and don't know where to get started after they've delivered their babies. In this DVD my sister is 9 months pregnant running through the steps she took and will take before and after the delivery. 2. Maintaining Fitness. Forgot the Reward?
After a full year of hard work we all need a little bit of pampering and some sort or reward. Just like my last day in China, after my intensive schedule (a 2 hour training every 4 hours, around the clock, day and night for 10 straight days) I paid myself a very unique kind of Chinese foot massage. With most of the training being mostly static, immoveable, standing positions, my feet were in need of some pampering. After, walking outside felt like walking on sponges, I was relaxed but rejuvenated at the same time. Which is exactly what you should do as well after you've maintained and "stuck with" a certain fitness routine or you've followed healthy eating habits or lost the desired weight. You should celebrate with some sort of reward. The biggest mistake people make is reach a goal and immediately set another one without rewarding yourself or taking the time to treat yourself to some sort of self-indulging activity. It's during that reward time that you can reflect on how good you feel when you do what you've set out to do (exercise regularly, eat right, no smoking, reaching a certain rank in martial arts, etc...) and you can even smile and think about all the people who told you you couldn't do it or didn't believe in you. Then when you return to maintaining and surpassing the goals you've set, you'll attack them with double the enthusiasm and determination while feeling refreshed and unstoppable. Legalized Drug Pushers
One week today I was boarding a plane for a business trip with my dad and happened to be sitting next to a group of high level pharmaceutical owners and employees who were on their way to the same hotel we were staying in for their end of year celebration. I was close enough to hear some of the comments being passed around. There must of been at least 30 of them. One lady sitting next to us engaged in small talk and made a comment that pretty much sums up how the pharmaceutical industry really feels about our well-being and health: "I like it when people are depressed and sick, we make more money". Keeping you sick and treating your symptoms instead of the root cause of an illness means big bucks for these legalized drug pushers. In my head I told myself: "You'll never make a dime off my back". I'm also of the opinion that your health is in your hands, it's hard to tell these days if your doctor really has your best health at heart. How do you feel about that? Me, I was happy to know that I'm not their best customer. In fact if everyone went to the hospital like I do, well there wouldn't be any hospitals or pharmaceutical companies would turn a "loss" every single year (instead of billions off of your back) and if there were hospitals, they would be for the people who really needs them. Get in the habit of researching stuff for yourself. When a prescription is given, usually 10 times out 10 there's a cheaper, natural way of treating it. I just got courses called Nutrition and Healing from Dr. Jonathan V. Wright. Eye opening stuff. I'll let you know some of my findings in the coming weeks. I'm not saying you should never visit your doctor. I'm just saying don't be so quick to reach for an over the counter drug or pay for a prescription given just to increase Big Pharma profits to later hear them brag about how many suckers bought their products. I'm sure some drugs are important and vital to keeping someone alive during an operation or things of that nature. But that lady really sealed the deal for me. I'm going to be very careful to take care of MY health and I encourage you to do the same. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Fang Shen Do, Fitness, Health, Sibok Martin Patenaude

Take the Stairs
Although this is good advice from a fitness point of view it's not what I mean. When it comes to your personal development make sure you take the stairs, not the elevator. Taking short cuts in this area is not recommended. Sure the elevator is quick and effortless but nothing worth having and fighting for is acquired through its use. The elevator to the top is, has been, and always will be "out of order" in my view. In order to get to the top in any endeavor you'll have to take the stairs. And you'll have to take them one at a time. Luckily they are right in front of you and you know exactly how many stairs you need to climb to get to the top. Then when you do reach the top you'll be armed with the right tools to stay on top. You can choose to look up the steps or step up the stairs? Which one will it be? When establishing a strong Martial Art Foundation, specifically in Fang Shen Do or whatever style you practice, the first step I would recommend is FSD's 10 secrets volume which also comes with 2 free bonuses. An orientation DVD that furthers your understanding of the foundation and a goal setting tool we use to get you on track and focused when obstacles might get in your way. Take the first step here. Are you aware this is happening?
After today's morning workout, I went through my standard ritual. When doing this "thing", my thoughts are very clear and my level of self-awareness rises dramatically.
I'm talking about stretching and flexibility work.
You too have probably realized this fact:
Losing flexibility as we age is the rule, especially if you never stretch.
You make it worse if you sit at a desk all day. But some regular exercise and proper stretching can slow the decline. Our ancestors never sat as long as we do. They were constantly on the move to hunt and survive. We were never meant to have lower back pain, most blame nerve issues, muscle problems, a bad mattress or bending over to pick something up but the major cause of it is simply too much sitting.
Just think of the time you spend sitting down during your day?
No wonder it is estimated 90% of us will experience back pain at some point in our life. Tight hip flexors is a common cause of back pain due to over-sitting.
Making sure you complete hip circles as taught in the "Nadeau" technique or folding at the waist both front and back, and performing simple lunges are very easy ways to loosen up the hip flexors.
Flexibility training is a must to all martial artists and should be part of your daily routine.
Look here to get a peak at what we do in Fang Shen Do when it comes to getting your body limber and pain-free.

Only for the Elite Class?
Just got back from an amazing weekend with my dad and brothers in Punta Cana. Although bathing in the sun was relaxing and energizing it couldn't compare to what we were exposed to, "Information Wise" over the weekend. As you might already know, secret societies have existed for thousands of years. There is one such society that is opening its doors to share with the world, information that was once kept only for the Elite Class. What does this have to do with martial arts? A martial artist is a warrior in every area of life, not just learning how to defend one's self or the ones you love but also protecting yourself from "Dream Stealers" and "Energy Leeches". Losers talk about Action. Winners Act. In anything you do it's important to surround yourself with like minded people. People that raise you up, not pull you down. Keeping this information for ourselves would be wrong. Which is why the first thing that came to mind today was sharing this with you. Hang out where we hang out, you need to be referred though. Invitation only. To access some of the info you'll need this affiliate code: 1508504 Visit this site only if you think you're worth more and think that in your life you feel like saying: "I can do better than this!" Fruit is always on a limb
In other words, nothing is ever easy. To quote Zig Ziglar: "Most people wait until everything is just right before they do anything. They refuse to go out on a limb because they don't understand that the fruit is always on the limb." Everything requires a little bit of effort, action and faith. You have success and a personal champion within you waiting to be discovered. Do you know someone who is "gonna do something just as soon as..." Do you know them personally as in, maybe...You? The people who wait until everything is "just right" before they do anything will NEVER do it. The time will never be just right to start training and losing weight. Nor will it be to stop smoking, changing the food you eat or starting your own business and making a living doing what you're most passionate about. This is the underlying principle of the Fang Shen Do System. To knock out the "I'll get around to it" mentality plaguing so many people today. The best way to get things done is to FEEL good. And what better way to do that than by first mastering your body. A strong body invariably leads to a strong mind that ultimately gets you to follow through on what you want the most. Here's how to do it.Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Life Lessons, Personal Development, Sibok Martin Patenaude, Sijo Jacques Patenaude

What's Important?
What you're doing right now. All of us. Wherever you are in the world. And most are not even conscious of it. BREATHING What better way to instantly feel good than to take one long, deep conscious breath? If ONE breath feels that good, imagine 10 in a row or better yet 10 deep breaths daily? Deep breathing alone can help you lose weight. Deep breathing coupled with walking can do wonders to elevate your mood. Deep breathing mixed in with martial arts techniques? Ah...there you have a recipe for power. Understanding how to breathe while stretching will see your flexibility soar to new heights. Taking care of your flexibility first, gives you an edge in every aspect of martial arts. You'll have more speed. Explosive Power. Less Injuries. You'll slowly increase your threshold for pain while strengthening your mind. You'll quickly understand how to use self-talk and visualization to reach your desired goals. In the end you'll be able to relax yourself quickly while possessing a ritual you can perform on your own which helps you feel good in your skin. Isn't that the point of martial arts? To feel good and to be pain free? Start increasing your Flexibility today. Let me show you how. The Art of Procrastination
Have YOU mastered it? Resort to it every once in a while? Or, NO, you never use it? It's in your best interest that you don't. Cause it will definitely lead you ... Nowhere! Procrastination makes you hesitate and miss golden opportunities. Procrastinaton is the enemy of progress. Procrastination spawns from being too comfortable. In prehistoric times, procrastination certainly meant death. Can you imagine our cavemen ancestors refusing to hunt because they were too tired or lazy to do so. To me procrastination still means death. Failure to act and let a goal slip from your grasp is a missed opportunity to breath new life into your heart and soul. Having the life sucked out of you doesn't sound like a pleasant experience yet millions of people fall victim to it around this time of year. Stick with your goals and see them through to their completion. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Sibok Martin Patenaude

I hear and I forget
With 20 days into the new year, how are you doing? Did you follow my advice and knock off the easiest goals on your list so you get the ball rolling and in turn create a surge of energy and excitement for the accomplishment of your other goals? I hope you did. I can tell you, I did that, and man am I ready to get things done this year. It's just simply impossible to have different results if you do the same things, the same way, using the same words and repeating what you did last year. "If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got." Trust me, start with the little goals and expand from there. You'll build enough momentum and confidence to tackle your major goals. A famous poet once said: "I hear and forget. I see and hear, and I remember. However when I see, hear and DO, I understand and succeed." Keep your goals fresh in your mind's eye. Listen, read and stay inspired. Finally, ACT on your goals daily. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Watch who you listen to
With the upcoming renovations in Kanata and the construction work that needs to be done I can't help but think about common construction jargon. If you've ever had work done in your house you'll understand what I mean. It's hilarious. The same subject always comes up without fail. The person that comes in for the estimate and to inspect the work that needs to be done will always say this: "Which _(Add defamatory word here)__ did this work? "What the _(Add defamatory word here)__ was he thinking?" "He did the work all wrong?" "We'll make sure to do the work right". And surely if another worker would be brought in after the new renovation he'd repeat pretty much the same thing about the new work done: "Who the hell did this work?" "What effin' dummy..." Makes me think of the same disease plaguing martial artists. And especially on discussion boards and forums. You'll find the same kind of behavior in the martial arts world. Watch who you listen to. The internet is filled with so called experts. The answers aren't found in cyber space. To quote Bruce Lee: "There is no ultimate style. The ultimate is inside of You. Be true to yourself and your journey through life" Are you constantly working on the ultimate You? What have you done today to get you one step closer to achieving your goals? This is YOUR year
January is my favorite month! You're given a chance to wipe the slate clean and attack the new year with optimism and gusto. It makes you feel like you're starting fresh, it makes you contemplate and imagine a long list of endless opportunities and possibilities. This is YOUR year. Clearly map out what you're going to do this year. Visualize and actually imagine NOW how you will feel when you've reached those goals. Express gratitude for what you have and what is to come. Figure out what drained you last year and what could of pushed you off course and correct it. Throw procrastination out the window. Refuse to settle for: "good enough". Acquire a burning desire for the attainment of your goals. The fastest way I've found to understand the concept of developing a burning desire, and this at record speed, is through a unique way of training we've incorporated in Fang Shen Do. Once understood, it's easily transferable to any other goals you might have. It's what I personally used as a kid to lay the foundation of discipline, follow through and a "never give up" kind of attitude. You can find out more about it here. Put all the chances on your side.
Are you of the opinion that YOU create your own luck or that sacred objects can bring you luck? Is the mere act of writing down goals enough to get you what you want? Whatever you might believe, in the end, you'll have to take action towards your goals. The reason I bring this up is I still ended up rubbing the turtle's head for longevity and good fortune at the Ming Tombs while on my trip to China last year. I thought I'd better put all the chances on my side. Same thing for your fitness goals. Only relying on the actual exercises you're going to do and not paying attention to what you eat will lead to less than stellar results. Or going at it alone and failing to have some sort of support through a group or club might be a challenge when your motivation and will power are tested. Put all the chances on your side so you can achieve maximum success. The first step is actually knowing what kind of exercises, in what order and at what frequency, you need to do them in. You'll find the answer to these questions and more by getting to work on our Basic Strength Training Kit. It's the first step in acquiring the kind of foundation you need to make struggling with your weight, muscle toning issues and general health problems disappear. Get started now. Watch the Results Show
It's hard to believe a decade has already passed in the "not so long ago" new millenium. A wise man once said about goals: "The important thing is not where you were or where you are but where you want to get". 10 years can fly by and without planning, can seem like you haven't accomplished much during that time when you look back on it. Your future should not be left to chance. For a forward thinking individual each of the 10 years that have passed was a step closer to reaching your master plan. Without goals you cannot grow, you'll feel like you're stagnating. If you've never written goals before I urge you to start this year. If you share this habit, keep it up. Write easy, yearly goals you can knock off in 12 months and remember to focus on creating an image of yourself 10 years from now. What do you want to accomplish in your life? What do you want to be? What level of responsibility do you seek? What kind of standard of living do you want for you and your family? How strong and healthy will you be? Questions of that nature. To quote David J. Schwartz: "You must form an image now of the person you want to be 10 years from now if you are to become that image". What a difference this kind of thinking has made in my life and my training. Apply it to yours and watch the results show. If you've done like I have and chosen martial arts training to improve every area of your life, you're in luck. You'll find many DVD courses and books in our Product Section to help you do that. Be on the lookout as well for new, up and coming DVDS, Books and Courses soon to be released in the new year. All the Best in the New Year
The new year is coming. Will you be ready? You already know that written resolutions without taking action on them is a waste of time. How do you "muster up" the will power to act on the goals you've set? As a rule of thumb, start by the goals that are fairly easy to accomplish this way you'll build momentum and confidence. Or find a way to chunk down a goal. Like losing weight. Instead of focusing on losing 50 lbs right away in January, which might now seem impossible, overwhelming, and so far fetched, turn your focus to losing 1 lb a week. This mini-success so to speak will get the ball rolling and help you believe you can do it. You'll surely end up losing more than 1 lb a week once you start getting results and most importantly getting inspired. This same principle can be used in "flexibility goals" for example or "strength goals". Chunking down is by far the best way to actually follow through on the goals you've set in 2010. I'd like to thank you for being one of my subscribers and even more so if you were a customer of ours this year, I really appreciate it. From my family to yours, may you have an adventurous, fulfilling, and prosperous new year. Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Follow Through, Goals, New Year, Sibok Martin Patenaude

Never to be Forgotten
At the Great Wall I admired these great big stone tablets lining the walls before starting our ascension through this wonder of the world. The wall's history is set in stone never to be forgotten. The stone tablets reminded me of the importance of writing, preserving and documenting goals, both past and present as they serve you in keeping track of YOUR history. It serves you as a reminder of: - What you were thinking about.
- What needed to be accomplished.
- Your dreams.
- What you went through to reach them.
- Who you were and who you've become.
I still review goals from 2, 3, 5 years ago. Just the other day I crossed off a goal I had written 7 years ago. Once you plant a seed in your subconscious mind it doesn't forget. It will be hard at work making sure it accomplishes what you set out to do even if it means taking a few more years for its completion. When reviewing past and present goals you can't help but feel really happy that you took the time to write and record your thoughts and put a part of you on paper. Your life and what you make/made of it is worth recording right? Here you are at that time of year again where you have to prepare for next year's experience. Physically, where will you BE at this time next year? How much will you weigh? How strong will you be? What about Flexibility? Endurance? Which weapon will you master? Will you make better food choices? Cut out filthy habits of smoking or doing drugs? Increase confidence to follow your true calling in life? Will you remember to breathe and take care of your internal world, flowing the chi and releasing unwanted stress? Who are you going to meet this year in love, business or as a role model? Will you hold yourself accountable throughout the year to make sure you're following through and working towards the completion of the goals you've set? Will you take some time alone at least once a week to meditate, feel your life and reflect on the choices you've made? Will you dare to dream big goals? Will you demand your absolute best even when you don't feel like it? Will you get right back up after suffering a set-back or disappointment? Will you walk the path of mastery this year? I hope you do. And I'll be right there beside you. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: China Trip, Goals, Great Wall, Life Lessons, Sibok Martin Patenaude

Key component to feeling massive amounts of...
Even though I didn't have a chance to meet Bruce Lee in person while he was alive, through Bob Wall I feel like I have. Going through more pictures yesterday from Bob Wall's visit to Canada back in May as well as my time spent with him in July in Los Angeles brought back memories and some important lessons he shared with me. I happened to interview him in early January of this year and should make it available very soon. Having such close ties to a man who trained and maintained one of the longest friendships with Bruce Lee is pretty cool indeed, considering not even a handful of people teaching Lee's art today can attest to that. What was also cool was asking him advice on one of my "Louse Time" Blog Posts that I usually do on Fridays while he was here in May. As you might already know, "Louse Time" originated from the hit movie Enter the Dragon which starred Bob Wall (Ohara) opposite Bruce Lee. The whole idea of Louse Time is to listen and forget what you think you know. Always resorting back to a beginner's mind has served me well in my training and I hope you do the same. To remain "Teachable" at every stage of your training and in life in general is a key component to feeling massive amounts of joy, motivation, and creativity. Some people find this out later in life, asking themselves: "Why didn't I listen more, do more, or take more chances?" Avoid these feelings of regret. Be teachable.

Quit now or Quit later?
Did you ever wonder why some people are successful in everything they undertake while others never seem to get anywhere really? I've seen it all too many times in martial arts and the same is true in any other field. Desire meets Action. Before long, you realize some work has to be done before you can call yourself a martial artist. Stickability is 95% ability. What's common is getting discouraged in the early stages of your training when you feel uncoordinated, stiff and out of shape. That, I can kind of understand, like all things new, a certain adaptation time is required so you can finally start moving naturally. Mentally at this stage, the strong are separated from the weak. What puzzles me are the ones that actually get the results they were looking for, like losing weight, increasing flexibility and strength, building confidence and character, developing skill and proficiency and then slowly see them slide into complacency. Which is better quitting in the beginning or quitting in the end? Neither one of them. Turn your stickability to "high" so you can experience the joys of finishing what you start while realizing the path of self-mastery has no end to it, just a series of steps, moving you upward in your evolution. I feel so sad for them
Last night we went out for dinner at the Lac Lemay Casino in Gatineau to celebrate my spouse's birthday. We had a great time and the food was excellent except for one thing. I usually go to the Casino about once a year, not to gamble but to enjoy a show or fine dining. And this "thing" I already know, I'm reminded of it every time I go there. I witness first hand the tragedy of not having goals, projects, a business, and ultimately the failure of not finding what you were born to do. I see a room full of elderly people wasting away at the slot machines. Rows upon rows of white heads staring at a screen. I feel so sad for them. Is that life? Is life so boring and uneventful that you have to settle for that? I'm not condoning a night out of fun and gambling at the casino. It's just that every time I go I see the same thing. If the same time and energy was invested in physical training, dream building, creating values for other people, and focusing on your true calling in life at ALL stages of life, wouldn't that bring you more joy, satisfaction and a sense of contribution? Where do you invest most of YOUR time and attention? "You become what you think about most of the time". The first time my dad told me this powerful little sentence I immediately put it into practice. Build a life you can be proud of, constantly strive to improve yourself and be committed to that philosophy throughout your life. Only then will you win the real jackpot. Neigong Training at the Temple of Heaven
It was quite something to walk around this beautiful place. Not just from an architectural stand point but from the landscape as well. Some of the trees here are 800 years old. It is said that this temple was built as the meeting point between heaven and earth. One thing for sure, there's a feeling of calmness and serenity here. I like the symbolism behind each building and what it represents as well as why and how they were built. Every building serves a purpose adding to the overall beauty of the park. Everything is calculated. The imperial north-south axis that runs from the Temple of Heaven to the Forbidden City to the main Olympic site is quite impressive. The way the number 9 or multiples of it were used to build the Altar of Heaven. The steps, the balustrades, the railings and the altar floor all comprise the multiple of 9, the numerical epitome of Yang, the positive force. Standing on the center tablet of the Altar of Heaven was once considered the most sacred spot in the Chinese Empire. A person standing in the center of the altar who speaks softly will hear the echo of his own voice.

"Standing on the Center Tablet"
Others on the platform will not hear it because the sound echoes off the surrounding balustrade and returns directly to the center of the circle.
Another interesting point, if one stands on the first flagstone at the bottom of the staircase which leads up to the southern entrance door of the Hall of the Imperial Heavenly Vault and claps or shouts loudly, a single echo is produced; standing on the second flagstone, a double echo is produced; and on the third flagstone, a triple echo can be heard.
Also, in the same courtyard, if two people stand at the east and west extremes of the circular "Echo Wall" and speak softly, the sound will be propelled around to the person on the opposite side. Not bad considering this was built starting in the 1400s. Another area where the Chinese were and are ahead of their time is with internal energy development. While in the park we managed to take some time, secluded in the forest, to practice our Neigong (internal work) training. As you can see from this picture there are many spots where one can take time to harness and flow the chi energy in the body and to do it in this place was a privilege and an honor. It's Louse Time! Very Easy to Be Lazy
Today's lesson is: Very Easy to Get Lazy Especially when you've finally gotten what you were running after. Have you had this happen to you? It could of happened to me if I didn't have my weekly lessons with my dad. Which is a good thing if you're also reading this blog post, it means you'll be reminded too.
Everyone is different but usually: Some get lazy physically after they get married or when they have kids. In martial arts it might be when you get a certain high rank. Others get lazy AFTER they've finally gotten themselves in shape and lost the excess pounds they had to drop. Some get lazy after achieving a certain level of success. Whatever the reason might be, the reality is: IT HAPPENS. It's important to realize this sooner rather than later. Complacency always finds a way in. Will you be ready? Do not be a shadow of what you could of been or what you were. Hold yourself to the highest standards possible in the areas of health and fitness. Stay excited about learning and acquiring new skills with child like enthusiasm. Be teachable and motivated to know there is still so much to learn. After each success, stop to celebrate, then get back to work immediately. Realize that success isn't a one time thing. Each day should be evaluated as being a success or a missed opportunity. Everything you have in your life, that which you are most happy or grateful about needs to be tended to and reminded that none of them are permanent unless you devote some time and energy to preserving them. Karambit Training
Last Saturday we held a Karambit Seminar in Montreal at our St-Denis Location. Students were introduced to this ancient weapon used in Indonesia and in parts of the Phillipines. KARAMBIT meaning "Tiger Claw" is a very simple yet lethal weapon. The versatility in angles and grip positions is as simple as spinning the weapon through the ring in the handle which makes the Karambit one of my favorite close quarter weapons. The principles and techniques are so easy to learn and doesn't require any special skill or years of training to be proficient with it. As soon as I got introduced to this weapon in L.A last summer I was immediately hooked. It compliments so well what we already do in our hand to hand, trapping and grappling techniques. In case you missed it there's another Karambit seminar being held in Ottawa, 335 Catherine St. tonight at 8:30 pm. You can register for it here. Did you exercise today?
Last week I posted pictures from what I thought was my best day out in China. On that same day, further out in Badachu Park, I came across this huge bell and thought: "Why not go up and hit it, see what kind of vibration it creates?" The sound was pretty cool but not what followed. I didn't notice the sign at the bottom, top and sides of the bell that (what I found out later) said in chinese, one hit 5 yuan. As I was walking away, a lady started running after me: "you pay, you pay, you hit bell" "I thought I could hit the bell?" I said. "See, look the sign here" she replies in her broken english. "You hit 5 times"... "I was happy?" I blurt back. "You pay NOW" LOL I ended up paying for it. It reminded me of the expression "There is no such thing as a free lunch" Same thing goes for your training. "Ain't nobody comin' for ya" In the end you're the one who will have to do the reps, the sets, the sacrifice, the sweating and fighting procrastination. No one will do it for you. Which is why it's so rewarding in the end. You create your reality. You make it possible. You're 100% responsible for it. Did you exercise today? Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Nutrition Tips
What does YOUR diet consist of? While in Beijing, I was brought to a famous street, where food stands are lined up side by side, each offering their unique specialty. This store was serving up something a little different. Live Scorpions. Skewered and still moving, people were lined up to sample these little critters. I guess compared to us here in the west, this particular food doesn't look good but IS good for you. While most of OUR food looks good but isn't good for you. This case is a little extreme but just look at the average North American's breakfast. It's either: 1) Skipped all together 2) Cereal 3) Sugar laced coffee and a donut 4) Or even better a cream cheese bagel and a muffin. Not to mention the junk that gets eaten during lunch time. Yumbo! Makes for a very productive day. Definitely not what our ancestors used to eat in the morning. Whatever happened to water, fruits, nuts and protein first thing in the morning? Large corporations are hard at work trying to tell you what to eat. Use common sense. Eat what can be picked from a tree, dug up from the ground, hunted or caught in the sea. Next time you visit the grocery store, focus on buying the food located on the outer walls of the store while avoiding most of the poisons found in the middle of it. That coupled with an effective, short, dynamic fitness program as taught in our Station Training Kits and you'll be all set. See what I mean here. Relic of the Buddha
In past posts I wrote about my best training day atop a rock in the Badachu Park while traveling in China. These pictures are from that day also. You'll notice the hill behind the temple in this first picture.
The perfect spot to do my Neigong Training. The temple you see there houses a relic of the Buddha. His TOOTH to be exact. The whole process to get to see the tooth was a challenge. Apart from waiting 4 hours in line and finding an appropriate gift to offer as sign of respect, fighting for position in what felt like being in a "mosh" pit to get in the front gate, once we got to the main doorway everything got really... quiet. Definitely something worth doing if you're in China in the future. I mean seeing the tooth was ok, but being there and thinking of the thousands of people (if not millions) who stepped into this place, revered the tooth, who held it, worshiped it, protected it over thousands of years. As we stood at the very top level of the temple of light (the one you see in the first picture), all crunched up in this small room reciting words of respect in chinese, one word flashed in my mind and struck me: BELIEF "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and bring himself to believe, he can achieve" All these wonderful temples and places I've visited were all built by men and women who believed. When building and protecting YOUR own temple (i.e: your life and everything it entails), make it strong, beautiful, and rewarding. Believe in Yourself. Build a strong body and mind. Set the example for others around you. Use the fighting spirit of the martial arts to fuel any project or goal to its completion. I'll be back with more tomorrow, Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Badachu, China Trip, Chinese Culture, Fang Shen Do, Neigong, Sibok Martin Patenaude
