Birthplace of Wudang Neigong
Can you imagine being one of the taoist monks living in this setting? No wonder they journeyed within, who wouldn't? External Harmony meets Internal Harmony. This is the birthplace of Wudang Neigong. The Wudang Mountains. Forging a deep connection with yourself and flowing the chi within should be one of your highest priorities. Training in this environment is good for the soul, a complete recharge, simply breathtaking. Following the sun and the moon in various patterns was part of our intensive training. Relic of the Buddha
In past posts I wrote about my best training day atop a rock in the Badachu Park while traveling in China. These pictures are from that day also. You'll notice the hill behind the temple in this first picture.
The perfect spot to do my Neigong Training. The temple you see there houses a relic of the Buddha. His TOOTH to be exact. The whole process to get to see the tooth was a challenge. Apart from waiting 4 hours in line and finding an appropriate gift to offer as sign of respect, fighting for position in what felt like being in a "mosh" pit to get in the front gate, once we got to the main doorway everything got really... quiet. Definitely something worth doing if you're in China in the future. I mean seeing the tooth was ok, but being there and thinking of the thousands of people (if not millions) who stepped into this place, revered the tooth, who held it, worshiped it, protected it over thousands of years. As we stood at the very top level of the temple of light (the one you see in the first picture), all crunched up in this small room reciting words of respect in chinese, one word flashed in my mind and struck me: BELIEF "Whatever the mind of man can conceive and bring himself to believe, he can achieve" All these wonderful temples and places I've visited were all built by men and women who believed. When building and protecting YOUR own temple (i.e: your life and everything it entails), make it strong, beautiful, and rewarding. Believe in Yourself. Build a strong body and mind. Set the example for others around you. Use the fighting spirit of the martial arts to fuel any project or goal to its completion. I'll be back with more tomorrow, Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Badachu, China Trip, Chinese Culture, Fang Shen Do, Neigong, Sibok Martin Patenaude

Secret to Progression
Seeing these old, used up stairs at the Great Wall reminded me of the secret of progression. Time and Repetition. Both lead to results depending on your point of view. Some activities and habits slowly destroy your body while others inject it with youth and vitality. Which ones are YOU engaging in? People often write in to ask how fast will they get results in their fitness level if they follow the instructions contained in our Station Training System, or "When will I be able to do a full split between two chairs the way Sijo, the Founder, is performing it on your Flexibility Series?". Some also ask: "When will I feel the chi coursing through my body as explained in your Neigong Program?". Same kind of questions I guess I asked myself when I took that picture: "How much time did it take to dent the slate on the Great Wall steps to erode them that way? Time and Repetition. Talking about how fit you will become or the levels of strength you will attain won't get you anywhere. Waiting to find the best time to finally start taking care of your health will lead to you never starting in the first place. Dreaming without doing is a waste of time. Every day that goes by where you fail to take action on your goals is an empty day. An opportunity lost to find fulfillment and a deep feeling of accomplishment in your life. Act now. The view was awesome, the feeling was amazing
Mixing the energy bubble a top a great rock on the Western Hills (Badachu) It took us about an hour to hike up to this area and the view on Beijing and the surrounding hills and temples was breathtaking. Out of all the places I visited during my trip, training in this area and the memory of it, as well as the feeling I experienced while doing my training here, will surely be one of the most memorable moments of my trip. In Fang Shen Do we encourage our students to anchor important moments you go through either in your training or in life in general. An anchor helps recall past experiences you can use in the present moment to snap yourself in a specific state at some other point in your life. You can relive a feeling you had in 3, 6, 12, 24 mths from now just by calling upon that anchor. Think about a moment in your life where you felt the happiest, the most confident, or the strongest. With the right anchors in place you can get to feel that way every day. We all live with anchors or associations, some of those can be positive while others can be negative. I count on the positive anchors I've set to keep myself motivated, happy, thankful, and energized every day. These over power any negative ones that might creep up. Music can be a source of empowerment or it can put you in a sad, depressed state so be weary of what you listen to. Starting something new might bring some anxious feelings, butterflies in the stomach, these can remind you of past failures and stop you from following through or they can fill you with excitement knowing you're going to learn something new. Sitting on the couch to watch TV might help you relax, unwind and disconnect or it can serve to remind you that lying down catatonic doesn't help you in any way to grow and reach the goals you've set for yourself. These are just basic examples. Think of all the associations your mind has made since you were born. Which associations do you have about exercise? Waking up early. Reading. Drugs. Relationships. Smoking. Etc. Etc... The good news is associations and habits can be changed or replaced in 21 days or less. Are you ready to make exercising a positive starting point to make other key changes in other areas of your life? Here's how I'd like you to get started. Mind like a Monkey
Calming the body is pretty easy. There are many ways to do so via physical exercise, foot and body massage, a hot bath, sauna, etc... Where it becomes difficult is with our mind. The mind will never stop. It will never be satisfied or at ease. New thoughts will enter your mind as quickly as one is dismissed. The first source of your thoughts come from your five senses. Everything you've learned since you were born has entered through your five senses. Naturally, your five senses often distract you from enjoying your relax time or your training time with a hefty supply of feedback such as: Too hot. Too cold. I'm itchy. You're hungry. Need to move. I'm tired. My feet hurt. etc... How do you shut it off? While in China, this particular condition plagued me at first. Out of my usual routine of doing several hundred reps to now stepping it up in the thousands and performing them at 1 and 5 am and at different times in the day, my mind literally was like a monkey. Wandering. Questioning. Complaining. Until I reminded myself what the master's wife had told me earlier. There is no You. There is no Space. There is no Place. None of them exist. Only focus on the Chi. Bring your full attention, your spirit and your heart to that place and time will just fly by. Time really did fly by. I've returned more motivated than ever to spread the elements of Neigong. Before reaching the point of creating and mixing an energy bubble you need to get started on the foundation work of Neigong contained in the first installment in the series. Here's the first step to reaching that level. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. There is a level of calmness you've never experienced before after training in Neigong. I want you to feel what I feel. Intense Neigong Training Schedule
Alot of people are asking me: "So how did it go?" Here'a quick snapshot at the end of one of our workouts. It's about 1:00 am. Usually, Neigong training isn't as intensive as this. But for our stay here and at the master's request we have to follow this traditional training schedule. 5 am to 7 am. 11 am to 1 pm. 5 pm to 7 pm. 11 pm to 1 am. And so on, every day for 10 straight days. That doesn't leave too much time to write blogs, e-mails, visit temples, talk to family and sleep! But still I managed to do all of the above, barely. If I could get 4 hours of sleep a night I was lucky. This schedule follows the pattern of the sun and the moon and is focused on absorbing energy from both sources (Yin and Yang) Disciples of the art are encouraged to seclude themselves once a year in this fashion for 2 to 4 weeks. This is not a pre-requisite to getting results and understandably not for everyone. Still it was a thrill and a challenge to go through it all. Even while back here in Canada I still wake up at these times ready to train. I'll be posting some more interesting training philosophies in the next few days. Meeting with the Master
Finally I get to meet a 15 th Generation student of the famous monk Tie-Song Tzi. Seeing Raf interact with his master reminds me of how I, and other senior Sifus in Fang Shen Do interact with my dad. There's a deep sense of friendship, lots of laughter and respect. There is cause for celebration as East and West unite and share in spreading this internal art to the world. I'm realizing as I'm writing this that meeting Raf was a blessing and this new journey in the internal world will be a fruitful one. As I've said in the past it's important for Fang Shen Do to always be on the cutting edge of martial arts. Adding this new facet to our training will greatly benefit our students all around the world. Although Neigong is very old and has been around for quite some time, most martial arts are strictly externally focused and the ones who are dubbing themselves "internal" are missing important components to increasing their Chi circulation that only neigong training can help stimulate. Once the building blocks are in place (Through diligent Neigong training), internal art practitioners can take their Tai Chi or Bagua to a whole other level. If you are training an internal art I strongly recommend you look into Neigong Training. It can save you years of frustration trying to get the results you really want. Like attracts Like
Like attracts Like. You've probably heard this saying before. This picture taken at the Forbidden City off of a huge copper caldron used to store water in case of a fire reminded me of what my father always told me about "What you are looking for is looking for you". Keeping your goals and desires at the forefront of your mind and reviewing them daily, insures you attract into your life the person or people, the circumstances, or the feeling you are looking for. One way to be clear about what you want is to clearly write down what you want. As simplistic as it might sound, the scary part is most people don't have written down goals? Some have a general idea in their head. And others are oblivious, just going through the daily grind, reacting to life instead of designing it. I want you to get what you want. I really mean that. If you're on this list you're at the right place. DECIDE today what you really want in all areas of your life then attack it with passion and a burning desire. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Interestingly before leaving for China, I packed my journal to record thoughts and feelings after each neigong training to review and track my progression. While flipping through it I came upon an old entry, 3 years to the day, where I clearly stated my intention of traveling to China to work with a neigong master. My book is filled with examples like these. Through reading my blogs and e-mails, one might think of my situation and unique experiences as being lucky. I'm simply following my plan. The same as Tai Chi, Chi-Gong or Yoga?
A common type of question I get alot about our Neigong (internal martial art) training is: "Is it the same as Tai Chi, Chi-Gong or Yoga? " Before I answer that question let's take a look at what's out there when it comes to internal energy development. The internal arts are getting more popular by the hour because aging baby boomers are looking to stay young and vibrant, healthy and disease free. Even adolescents and young adults are drawn to this aspect of the martial arts since everyone knows the chinese are very advanced in terms of chi development, superhuman feats of strength, long life spans, and child like flexibility. Who wouldn't want that? There's something attractive about strenghtening the mind-body connection, making sure every organ functions efficiently, and becoming more knowledgeable when it comes to Chi and the meridians of the body. If only every instructor in the martial arts taught this science. I have a confession to make. I can't stand some of the Tai Chi, Chi Gong, Yoga instructors sometimes. Especially the ones who try to be overly spiritual to a point where it becomes really cheesy and mystical. Or the ones that talk really quietly and slowly, trying to show you how much control they have. Makes me think of the movie: "They call me Bruce". There's this one memorable scene where the master is speaking to his students about control over one's self, mastering your emotions and how important it is to their development when suddenly the phone rings. The master heads on over to his office to pick up the phone, it's a bill collector! He goes on to swear, call names, basically scream at the guy for a few minutes while the students over hear everyhting until he hangs up and goes back on the training mat with a straight face and says: "As I was saying, you need control". Hilarious. How many instructors have you seen do this? Promote health and fitness then walk outside for a smoke and a coke? You hear an instructor talk about respect, discipline and commitment but he's on his 3rd divorce. I once saw a supposedly "Master", down 3 jumbo sized Ice teas laced with 10 packs of sugar twins at a business dinner. That would explain why he seems to have aged 30 years in the span of 5. The martial arts is loaded with stories like this. My point is, we've gone to great lengths to practice what we preach. I've searched for what is taught in our Neigong training for a long time. I've had my share of disappointments until I finally found what I was looking for. Is it the same as Tai Chi, Chi-Gong or Yoga? The purpose is the same, the end result is the same, the difference lies in the presentation. When you want to go somewhere fast do you prefer the long road or the shortcut? This once underground style of internal work is 800 years old. It's a system designed by martial artists for martial artists. It will strengthen you from the inside out. Unblock meridians. Flow your chi the way it was intended to and strengthen your martial art foundation. You can try it risk free by visiting this link. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. The Body serves the Mind
A picture of Raf, my Neigong instructor, at a recent seminar held at our private training pagoda.
The old masters believed that: "External Martial Art Training without the Internal Development was a waste of time". Interesting point. Even believing if you had great physical skill you would quickly hit a plateau in your development, even hitting a point of stagnation. The wise practitioner who would merge both, external and internal training would benefit from unlimited progression and a constant expansion of skill. I'm all for that. I'm one to believe you should put all the chances on your side to win. Winning for you might be to get in the best possible shape. Winning could also possibly mean you feel totally confident you could defend yourself when you walk down the street at night. Winning for someone who's never finished what they started might mean finally following through on the goals they've set for themselves. For others Winning might mean to be proficient in their martial art expression. "Martial Art Expression" you might ask? Yes. Whenever you practice martial arts you reveal a part of yourself to yourself or to your partner. You reveal bits and pieces of your character. If you pay attention close enough you can actually learn from every training session. That's what I like about my Neigong Training. When you listen, you hear some of your internal dialogue, sometimes you're distracted by something that's bothering you which makes you lose your count, or you get to see how you react to a little bit of uncomfortable muscle pain. That's where you see who's in charge? Your body or your mind? I like to believe the mind controls the body. The mind will tell the body what to do and the body will be a good servant and follow the orders. But for many that is not how it works, it's the complete opposite. Once the body shows the slightest sign of weakness or soreness the mind gives in and offers a... Break. Remember: "The body serves the mind" and not the other way around. Well, at least that's how it's supposed to be. This is one of the biggest benefits I've gained from the Neigong Training. I'm able to hold and squeeze my body through difficult postures and positions, as well as repeat any number of reps I ask of it in various exercises without giving in to my "lazy" body. If you wish to feel what I feel when sharing the above experiences with you, and if you want to master your body and mind, I seriously think you should join me in my Neigong Training. Never Bask in Complacency
This year marks my father's 30 th anniversary in Business. Man, have we come a long way since then. It puts everything in perspective when you see a company like Apple celebrating theirs a couple of years ago. It just hits you in the face like: "Hey, you've been doing kung-fu just as long as the birth of the personal computer" The fun part is we're just getting started. Leading by example is very important to us, that's why we keep evolving and learning because we stand behind the philosophy of: "Never Bask in Complacency" Many things have changed since 1979 but the essence of what makes us successful hasn't changed. One of those are "Testing & Researching" Always at the forefront of everything we do, there's always a faster, better way of doing anything. If we've learned so much in 30 years imagine the vast knowledge of the Chinese People. That's why I searched out one of only a few Neigong Masters in the world to train our students in this mysterious internal art. A student that is strong physically, muscular, skilled and seemingly fit holds only a part of the recipe. If you're not taking care of the internal and focusing only on the external you will reach a level of saturation. A plateau you might not be able to break out of. You will only develop yourself to the extent of how you work the inside. Now remember, coming across this information was no easy task. First I had to meet the right man who trained with a 14th Generation suuccessor of the famous monk Tie-Song. Who's lineage goes straight to Lao Tzu. I had to be certain of getting the right information and avoid finding an instructor who would only give me small pieces of the puzzle and make me turn in circles for 8 or 10 years (as is customary with some masters) to prove my loyalty. And many other things like: The language Barrier. The several approvals of the finished product. The distance issue (Hong Kong) Putting a price tag on something so ancient. etc, etc... This new addition to our FSD training is something I'm particularly proud of. From the quality of The film (HD) and the clarity of instruction as well as the immediate results you'll feel after completing just one session, it makes this a "must-have" tool for any serious martial artist or if you're just someone who's interested in working your internal energy but was often disappointed with other programs out there falling short of what they promised. Finding the right balance
There seems to be lots of misconceptions about "Frequency of training". The question I get alot is "How many times a week should I train?" Or some students have the idea that training more will make them stronger or tougher. If you want to allow for muscle growth, strength, and endurance gains to take place you have to let some rejuvenation take place. You must allow your body to recover and heal itself or else the very thing you're doing to stay healthy will actually have the opposite effect. Everything is about balance in every area of your life. The keyword is moderation. I'm not saying moderate exercise. When you train on those 3 days you've set for yourself, those are high intensity, maximum output training days. Off-days are used to stretch, perform deep breathing exercises, neigong, weapon training, and balance training. You can train skill (punching & kicking, footwork, energy drills, etc...) every day but only push your body physically to extremes 3 times a week (Station Training, Kettle-Bells, Sandbags, D-balls, High Rep Conditioning Drills, Power Exercises) In Neigong we say: "The chi is like a battery, kinda like the one inside a toy you buy at the store, once you hit 16 years of age that battery slowly starts to lose it's charge." Knowing this, there is no need to drain that battery unnecessarily by over-training. Martial art training or any kind of physical conditioning should be a way to preserve yourself, not cause you to slowly deteriorate. That is one purpose of Neigong training. To keep your battery charged because the one that is inside of you cannot be recycled. Charge battery here. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Neigong

Wudang Neigong doesn't exist
That's the title of an e-mail from an angry potential buyer I got last week. He said he looked for it all over the place and couldn't find any information on it except on our website. In his opinion if it's not on the net it doesn't exist and this is a scam. This is exactly what I talked about in the past concerning this art. It's a SECRET art. You won't find any information on this particular style of Wudang Neigong because it's been taught underground for the past 500 years. Only recently has it been shared with the general public. Ask the common person in China if they know what Neigong is, they'll answer: "yes" but ask them WHERE they can learn it and the answer will most certainly be: "I don't know". If it's like that in China imagine what people know about it in other parts of the world? Not much. With the Olympics now started and China opening its doors to the rest of the world, hopefully we'll see more and more secret training being released in the future. Although there are no guarantees of that happening any time soon. What I can guarantee is that we just replenished our stock of Neigong DVDs and we can get them shipped out to you ASAP. Neigong Highlights & Pictures
Last Thursday was our 1st official Neigong seminar at our Ottawa Kung-Fu School. Here's me and Raf showing how to make your chi literally explode as we collide full force with each other like a wave smashes against the beach. When you do this exercise you really lose track of time and quickly fall into a state of deep concentration. When the bodies collide full force you feel your energy vibrate through your whole body. What's unique about Wudang Neigong is that it's a form of Internal Work which will greatly enhance your Martial Arts skill while strengthening and increasing your vital energy. What I like the most about this art is you don't need to breathe a certain way or visualize something specific. You don't even need to know how the chi works or how it flows, you just do the exercises as prescribed. If you pay attention and put all your focus on you, you feel it right away. If you ever had doubts about yourself, your importance, how special you are, 10 minutes into your Neigong training you realize that you're body is much more than what the average person thinks of it. You know how they say we only use 10 % of our Brain. This is kinda like the same thing. You realize your body is capable of so much more. One of the first things you realize is why I didn't find out about this sooner. If you own a Wudand Neigong DVD set, I hope you put it to good use. Remember if you're let's say, 30 years old. You can't expect to unblock your meridians in one sitting. It took you 30 years to block them and understand it's a process. For some the chi will flow through the meridians instantly and for others it might take some more time but we'll all get there in the end. I'm looking forward to hearing from you and your feedback. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S What still amazes me is how the chinese managed to develop this ability and harness the chi inside their body, no one knows exactly how old this is, some say more than 5000 years old. Help us keep this art alive and flourishing, order your very own copy today. Labels: Neigong

What you can expect from Neigong training
As you might already know, last Thursday we held a Neigong training seminar with Raf (one of a few rare neigong teachers around) at the Ottawa location. Apart from the language barrier once Raf started moving and showing the different exercises and positions, it was quite obvious that he knows something, the way he moved, his concentration as well as the energy he was projecting was felt by all. Lots of feedback trickling in via e-mails and I thought I'd share a few with you. --- Hi Sifu, This was an excellent Seminar, as was the first one. We are very fortunate to have Raf here with us. By the end of today's seminar, I could feel a difference in strength even though I had a few problems with my prevailing shoulder injury. By the end of the seminar the pain of my injury was totally manageable. Along with my FSD training, my goal is to overcome this temporary limitation, while achieving overall strengthening, better health, and balance. I am more confident of being able to achieve these goals now, especially after this evening. Not too long ago, before joining FSD, I was very sick. My prognosis was yet to be determined. I was scared, and needed to find a better healthier way to live. While I was recovering from a serious operation, a friend of mine was practicing FSD and invited me as a guest to watch. I was in awe when I saw the intensity and enthusiasm of all of the students as they did their stations, and even more so when I saw the spectrum of ages of those taking the training, from the very young and beyond. In other words, age was not a factor. The path I wanted to be on to better health became very clear to me, and soon after I was strong enough, I joined FSD, and have become more driven, and feel stronger with every class. I know that FSD will help me to be the best I can be, while making my body stronger to prevent the possibility of future illness. It was a fantastic experience, and many need to know what they are missing. I look forward to the next seminar, and will do my best to spread the word. Today, I will start the 100 day challenge. Thanks again Sifu, and all the best to Sijo and Linda. Best Regards, V --- That's awesome. Invest in your training and make a point of attending a live training. I'll make sure to let you know the time and place. Until then get started with " Foundation Development", the first chapter in this on-going series on Internal Work called Neigong. Outdoor activities yield the best results
With summer upon us you should make every effort to take your training outside. The fresh air. The vitamin D from the sun (which studies show most people are deficient in) Modern society has us driving to work, working inside and applying chemical filled sun lotions that block your bodies ability to absorb it. Apart from the obvious health benefits of training outside I also enjoy the environmental challenge. The uneven terrain will cause an off-set in your foot position for squats, or doing push-ups on a decline hill. Jumping over picnic tables. The variety of exercises you just can't do inside (unless you don't care destroying your floor) like throwing Kettlebells or heavy D-balls. Sprinting uphill or downhill. Doing my Neigong outside, I feel a connection with nature and the silence and tranquility helps me focus deep inside. When training outside positive associations are made since most of your senses are over stimulated outside, making it easier to anchor good feelings with physical training. Once these associations are in place you can use them at another time when you don't feel like training. One quick mental replay of those images you've anchored will surely change your mood. Today was another great outdoor training day with the Bros. Did you do yours? Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S If you still don't know what Neigong is I strongly recommend you take the time to join us tomorrow night at the Ottawa headquarters, 6:00 pm. You'll enjoy training outside with this internal energy system. Labels: Neigong, Outdoor training

Live Neigong Training in Ottawa
Last Wednesday I mentioned we were holding a special Neigong training session this Thursday in Ottawa at 6:00 pm. If you purchased the Neigong DVD recently this is the perfect opportunity to see the different exercises done LIVE and have a chance to meet Raf (one of the rare masters in this virtually unknown art). If you haven't purchased the DVD yet that's okay, you can use the seminar as your introduction and be shown first hand what you need to do for increased Chi flow and unblocking your meridians. There are 2 ways to increase the Chi. 1) By doing the exercises (obviously) 2) The master passes down the energy. I found that last one interesting. The master doesn't just pass down the techniques but also the energy. That same energy has been passed down for many generations. The same thing holds true in your Fang Shen Do training. If you do not exchange once in a while with your Sifu, your development will be slower. Just looking at all the students in your class you can see who gets the most contact from the Sifu or the school's chief instructor. Once you do you'll understand faster, you'll move more naturally, and you'll capture the essence of the art. With that said, there's a great opportunity this Thursday, see you then. You can confirm your attendance by e-mail here. Sifu Martin Labels: Fang Shen Do, Neigong

Too much energy?
Yesterday was my kind of day. In past e-mails I've talked about the Mushin State. You know that state of being where you're totally immersed in the moment. Time stops... Nothing else matters...You're totally in the zone. My class last night went over-board by about an hour as it just flew by me and I didn't fall asleep until 3:30 am only to wake up at 5:45 am this morning. Top Shape. My energy was vibrating. I couldn't turn it off and why would I want to? Some people pop expensive pills to stay awake and drink hazardous energy drinks. There I was getting mine free of charge with no side effects. Recent surveys show people wanting to have "more energy" but going about it the artificial way isn't the safest solution in the long run. Want to know my secret? Neigong. (An ancient lost art for energy and fitness you've heard me talk about) It's amazing the things happening to me as I continue my progression in this art and you need to get your hands on it. We have all but 12 copies left of our first batch of DVDs. In Neigong the number 9 is very special so I'm gonna do something special. I was given a special gift by Raf ( My Neigong instructor) earlier this year, an old painting depicting deadly pressure points on two warriors. If you're the one who lands on DVD # 9 ( As I sell one I count down from the 12 remaining ones) I'll send you a re-print of this painting along with your Neigong DVD. That way you can hang it on your wall and look at it while you train and feel special that you own a piece of Neigong history. Hurry there isn't much time left, Sifu Martin Labels: Energy, Neigong
