Never rest on your laurels

Yesterday we re-connected with Nick Hewitson, World Muay Thai Champion, with over 100 fights to his credit without ever suffering a loss.

In past blogs I had mentioned we had met him while touring in Europe earlier this year.

A very nice man and very knowledgeable in his field. What he teaches is very authentic, brutal and challenging. I realize this is not for everybody. That's why a special program will be offered in our schools for those who want to step up to that level.

Most Muay Thai schools today offer a very watered down version of the art. To quote Nick: "Alot of people today just want to wear the nice shorts and pretend they're doing Muay Thai".

I found it inspiring that even after retiring from fighting professionally, he's still training, still tough, still in shape and still passionate about the art.

Naturally we gravitated towards him since he shares some of the same beliefs about training intensity, assholes on forums who talk a big game, belly masters and the like.

You can never rest on your laurels and that goes for you too. Always challenge yourself and seek out new ways to push yourself past certain thresholds.

Without a doubt if it wasn't for the training we regularly subject ourselves to with our Station Training we wouldn't of been able to complete the drills he asked us to perform.

Since we train to end a confrontation in 30 seconds or less, a minor adjustment had to be done to last 4 minute plus rounds.

Once again it reinforces the element I've been talking about for a while now, Conditioning First, once that is in place you can make everything else happen.

Train in as many ways possible, change it up, make sure that what you're doing are full body workouts, train to exhaustion, switch intervals from 1 minute through 5 minutes, and train your will to never give up.

Those are the core elements of Station Training. Everything has been laid out for you in our Strength Training Kits.

Training the way we do leaves you ready to tackle any physical activity and gives you the ability to adapt to any sport or workout.

Be careful not to do "Too much, Too soon". Station Training is the perfect way to build your endurance in such a way that is progressive, at your own pace, and already tested for you.

Maybe you don't want to step in the ring with a Muay Thai fighter but you want to make damn sure you're in the best possible shape and that you're commited to stay strong, healthy and vibrant for as long as you can.

Sifu Martin

Fitness Standards

I'm getting interesting feedback from my e-mail yesterday asking how you measured up to the Men's Health Standards.

I can't say that I'm really surprised about the stats from our students. Setting high fitness standards is a major priority in our school.

Naturally, our students excelled well past the MH standards.

Here's David and Tyler's Stats report from Laval, Qc and Ottawa, Ont., Fang Shen Do Schools:

The 1-Mile Challenge
MH Fit: >6 minutes
Davidk: 5:18 minutes
Tyler: 4.5 minutes

The Single-leg Squat Test
Pause 1 second in the down position, then push yourself up.
MH Fit:>5 reps
Davidk: 30 reps each leg
Tyler: 15 reps each leg

The Vertical Jump Test
How to do it: Against a wall, extend your arm and mark your reach
with chalk. Then jump as high as you can and make another mark. The
space between marks is your vertical jump.

MH Fit:>24 inches
Davidk: 23 inches no sprint, with sprint 29 inches
Tyler: didn't bother.

The Chinup Challenge
MH Fit:>9 reps
Davidk: 30 reps
Tyler: 15 reps

The Pushup Test
Lower yourself until your chest touches the floor.

MH Fit:>49 reps
Davidk: 65 reps non-stop
Tyler: 90 reps

Where do YOU stand compared to these stats?

Anyone with common sense would tell these 2 guys to keep doing what they're doing, it's working.

Master Yourself,

Sifu Martin

P.S. If you were late sending those stats in you can still do so here.

P.P.S. If you're not a student yet and would like to get the same results pick up one of our strength training kits or to become a student, check for a location near you here.

An easy mental exercise you can do

One of my favorite movies of all time is Braveheart.

I know every scene by heart and me and my lil' Bro can act out pretty much any one of them with the Scottish Accent.

Hilarious.

Although recently, I haven't had a chance to watch it.

There's one scene that I especially like (actually I like all the scenes). It's just one keyword I use when I'm training.

You've heard me talk about that before, you know Keywords?

A keyword can be used many different ways.

One way is to choose a word that will help you keep the conscious and subconscious mind occupied while doing a certain exercise. It might help you squeeze out a few more minutes when holding a strength position. (Tigers, Hand Stand, etc...)

Back to the scene, William Wallace and his army have constructed wood spears, long as a man, and the Royal Cavalry is charging towards them. Wallace's army is anxious to attack but he holds them back using the keyword I use when holding a Back Bends or Forearm Push-Ups.

He waits until the very best moment to lift the spears from the ground and they end up impaling the enemy badly. It was a great strategy.

The way he says it with intensity and commitment, that's one of the words I like to use when giving up just isn't an option. You'll have to watch the movie if you don't know the answer.

Once you have the keyword you'll need to know which exercises to apply this on. For that you'll need to pick up a strength training kit right here.

Intentio superus,

Sifu Martin
