"Up, Down", "Breathe in , Breathe out", "Side to Side"

For the past few days I've been feeling like Daniel-san in Karate Kid.

If you remember 2 years ago I had posted a series of articles about how one of our sheds had crumbled under the extreme weight of the record snow fall we had that year and how liberating it was to burn it and build a new one from scratch.

Seeing it burn was a powerful metaphor about how we all need to get rid of messes in our life and how we need to constantly re-invent ourselves when it comes to how we think, how to work, how we train, and how letting go of unnecessary emotional baggage is a necessity if we want to grow and attract better opportunities.

If feel like Daniel-san because I've had to re-paint that shed for the past couple of weeks.

"Up, Down", "Breathe in , breathe out", "Side to side" as Mr. Miyagi would say.

Painting gets me in a very relaxed state, the same way martial arts does.

It puts you in a place where time seems to stop, you're totally encapsulated in the present moment (what the japanese would call the Mushin state).

Do you ever reach that place?

That place where you could work all day and all night and still be filled with energy?

The quickest way to feel this state of being is through the practice of martial arts. I didn't say it was the only way but it is by far the quickest I've seen to understand what I mean.

If you haven't yet taken up the daily practice of martial arts, I strongly recommend you get started ASAP. We've made it pretty easy for you to get started, see what I mean here.

Financial Crisis!

Everyone around us is screaming "Financial Crisis!"

I say we have a "Personal Energy Crisis!"

Do you POUNCE out of bed or ROLL out of it?

How would you rate your energy level during the day?

Half asleep, on Auto-Pilot, Average wattage or a Dynamo?

Your body is constantly giving you signals.

Are you avoiding the signals and getting a quick fix by drinking more sugar laced coffee and chugging energy drinks?

If you're driving down the highway and a sign says: "Construction Work Ahead-Slow Down".

Do you floor it or follow the instructions on the sign?

Why would it be different when it comes to your own body.

You don't need me to tell you what you should change as far as diet and activity goes. Chances are you already know what drains you of your energy.

So why keep on following the same pattern?

Who knows.

One road just seems easier I guess while the other one requires some sacrifice and effort.

Maybe the fact that Diabetes affects millions of kids and adults due to mal nutrition and lack of activity isn't enough, maybe when it hits a billion then maybe we'll see a change in people's lifestyles?

Or maybe when coronary heart disaese affects someone you know or worse, affects YOU, then we'll all get involved in charity walks, fundraisers and being conscious of the choices we make.

I hate being reactive. It goes against the principles we teach in our schools about personal protection.

"A good defense is a strong offense"

If you wait too long there's only so many punches you can dodge, deflect and absorb.

Same thing with your health. There's only so many treatments, operations, and drugs you can take before you come to the conclusion that putting your health first, reading labels on the food you buy, and staying active, should be a top priority.

Temptations are all around you, throughout your day, be one of the few that actually puts in practice 2 very basic principles that seems to have been lost in our society...

Self-Control and Self-Motivation to preserve optimal health in mind, body, and spirit.

Missing piece of the Fitness Puzzle

Warm weather this weekend gave us a small preview of what's to come.

The spring brings a breath of fresh air, but more important than spring is that actual BREATH of fresh air!

In martial art training your breath really IS your power.

Everything you do in MA relates to your breath.

If you're breathing correctly it can help you stretch your body further during certain exercises.

Holding your breath can help stiffen your body to squeeze out a few extra seconds when holding a strength position.

Exhaling your breath when attempting any dynamic movement like punching, kicking, sprawling, tackling will add great power to your movement.

Concentrating on the vibration of your breath at the end of a class or a workout will get you in a very calm state in no time flat.

Visualizing your breath in movement and feeling it reach every cell of the body, in turn helping activate your lymph system, helping your body eliminate toxins, is very therapeutic.

Understanding breathing patterns will help you increase mental focus and alertness.

Recent studies show that engaging in proper forced breathing alone can help you lose weight.
And the list goes on.

Breathing is so easy and simple, you're doing it right now automatically without thinking about it but just letting your subconscious take care of the breathing for you isn't enough to yield the kind of results you're looking for.

Learning to force the breath in specific ways is an important key to getting faster results in your martial art training, any other physical activity or to simply increase your overall health.

The quickest way to learn how to use breathing is to first start by incorporating it with your stretching routines. Once that is in place everything else will be that much easier to acquire.

I can show you exactly what I mean here.

Master Yourself,

Sifu Martin

P.S. I'll be letting you know shortly how you can get involved in our 30 year anniversary celebrations. It all starts March 28 th.

The Body serves the Mind

A picture of Raf, my Neigong instructor, at a recent seminar held at our private training pagoda.

The old masters believed that: "External Martial Art Training without the Internal Development was a waste of time".

Interesting point.

Even believing if you had great physical skill you would quickly hit a plateau in your development, even hitting a point of stagnation.

The wise practitioner who would merge both, external and internal training would benefit from unlimited progression and a constant expansion of skill.

I'm all for that.

I'm one to believe you should put all the chances on your side to win.

Winning for you might be to get in the best possible shape.

Winning could also possibly mean you feel totally confident you could defend yourself when you walk down the street at night.

Winning for someone who's never finished what they started might mean finally following through on the goals they've set for themselves.

For others Winning might mean to be proficient in their martial art expression.

"Martial Art Expression" you might ask?

Yes.

Whenever you practice martial arts you reveal a part of yourself to yourself or to your partner.

You reveal bits and pieces of your character.

If you pay attention close enough you can actually learn from every training session.

That's what I like about my Neigong Training.

When you listen, you hear some of your internal dialogue, sometimes you're distracted by something that's bothering you which makes you lose your count, or you get to see how you react to a little bit of uncomfortable muscle pain.

That's where you see who's in charge?

Your body or your mind?

I like to believe the mind controls the body. The mind will tell the body what to do and the body will be a good servant and follow the orders.

But for many that is not how it works, it's the complete opposite. Once the body shows the slightest sign of weakness or soreness the mind gives in and offers a... Break.

Remember: "The body serves the mind" and not the other way around.

Well, at least that's how it's supposed to be.

This is one of the biggest benefits I've gained from the Neigong Training.

I'm able to hold and squeeze my body through difficult postures and positions, as well as repeat any number of reps I ask of it in various exercises without giving in to my "lazy" body.

If you wish to feel what I feel when sharing the above experiences with you, and if you want to master your body and mind, I seriously think you should join me in my Neigong Training.

If you're just starting out here's where you can take the perfect first step:

Too much energy?

Yesterday was my kind of day.

In past e-mails I've talked about the Mushin State. You know that state of being where you're totally immersed in the moment. Time stops... Nothing else matters...You're totally in the zone.

My class last night went over-board by about an hour as it just flew by me and I didn't fall asleep until 3:30 am only to wake up at 5:45 am this morning. Top Shape.

My energy was vibrating. I couldn't turn it off and why would I want to? Some people pop expensive pills to stay awake and drink hazardous energy drinks. There I was getting mine free of charge with no side effects.

Recent surveys show people wanting to have "more energy" but going about it the artificial way isn't the safest solution in the long run.

Want to know my secret?

Neigong. (An ancient lost art for energy and fitness you've heard me talk about)

It's amazing the things happening to me as I continue my progression in this art and you need to get your hands on it.

We have all but 12 copies left of our first batch of DVDs.

In Neigong the number 9 is very special so I'm gonna do something special.

I was given a special gift by Raf ( My Neigong instructor) earlier this year, an old painting depicting deadly pressure points on two warriors. If you're the one who lands on DVD # 9 ( As I sell one I count down from the 12 remaining ones) I'll send you a re-print of this painting along with your Neigong DVD.

That way you can hang it on your wall and look at it while you train and feel special that you own a piece of Neigong history.

Hurry there isn't much time left,

Sifu Martin

Don't settle for Artificial Energy

Don't do it! I know it's tempting but don't settle for artificial energy.

It's a fact Energy Drinks actually rob you of energy.

You see them branded about everywhere nowadays.

Nothing about them interest me. Who wants to ingest 200 to 400 mg of caffeine in one drink?
Do you know which other drink boasts those same numbers? Coffee.

I know it must be hard for some of you to drop that habit. But believe me in the long-term you're in for some serious health issues.

Caffeine is the addictive element that makes coffee or energy drinks so appealing - and provides the jolt to smooth the transition from sleep to facing another day at work or school.

Take the worst energy drink out there: Monster

For every 20 oz. of Monster you drink it takes 6.3 gallons of water to flush it out of your kidneys. The average person drinks 6.3 gallons of water in 23 days. For every 20 oz of Red Bull you drink, with no sugar, it takes .9 gallons of water to flush out your kidneys and the average person drinks .9 gallons of water in about 2 days. (as published in a recent GNC article).

Once caffeine enters your bloodstream, it takes about 15 minutes for you to start feeling its effects. Caffeine stimulates the brain in the same way that cocaine and heroin does:

It blocks adenosine reception so you feel alert.
It injects adrenaline into the system to give you a boost.
It manipulates dopamine production to make you feel good.

Energy Drinks don't replenish the body after physical exertion (like sports drinks such as Gatorade).

In fact, because Energy Drinks have so much caffeine - they can actually dehydrate the drinker. That means if you're physically exerting yourself and drink just a Red Bull, the lack of hydration could strain your heart.

And if you combine energy drinks with alcohol, your risk of dehydration rises. There's another trend among teens and college students.

Students whose motor skills, visual reaction times, and judgment are impaired by alcohol may not perceive they are intoxicated as readily when they're also ingesting a stimulant, only the symptoms of drunkenness are reduced - but not the drunkenness. They can't tell if they're drunk; they can't tell if someone else is drunk. So they get hurt, or they hurt someone else.

You don't need to rely on artificial sources of energy.

The formula is quite simple: Short-dynamic-daily exercise, drink water! (3 glasses a day minimum), fruits and vegetables, protein (from nuts and lean meats), & deep breathing exercises.

You might say: "It can't be that simple!"

"Oh yes it can!", it just takes a little bit of discipline. Remember what I've talked about before:

Do you treat your body like a trash can?

Keep ingesting energy drinks and loads of coffee and you'll NEVER find the energy you were looking for in the first place.

Your health first,

Sifu Martin

Begin with a major adrenaline rush

I seem to be stuck on the subject of deep breathing recently. It's just so important. It's the foundation to anything you'll ever do in the martial arts or fitness training in general.

I've covered many different ways to use breathing to your advantage in past e-mails.

This one way is especially important. It's Isometric Breathing.

Breathing this way will forge your character, build true strength, emotional intensity, and mental toughness.

I've done lots of it since the age of 6 and I like to believe it had everything to do with my physical development.

A quick example would be to stand feet shoulder width apart, and clench your fists.

Inhale through the nose twice (short and sharp), then proceed to exhale through the mouth, with your tongue behind your teeth, making a hissing sound as you punch out slowly while resisting your own movement.

Imagine someone trying to stop you from punching or kinda like punching against a spring.
Time the full extension of your punch with the end of your exhale and aim the height and center of your nose.

Inhale twice again, relax, start punching with the other hand. Do this 20 times to start. Remember apply maximum resistance, everything depends on how emotionally involved you get.

Also when exhaling, contract every muscle in your body especially your abdomen.
I'm telling you, you're gonna feel major alertness, intensity, and an adrenaline rush after doing this.

This is one more strategy you can use when you feel a bit sluggish and lazy before starting your strength training. It will definitely set the mood for a great workout. Want to know which workout you can do to yield the best results?

Get them here.

Master Yourself,

Sifu Martin

P.S If you never do what I ask you to do then reading this is worthless. Once you incorporate this simple isometric exercise before your training routine you'll be all set and ready to roll.
