Priceless Life Lessons
Every year on March 10th I reflect on where I started and how far I've come. Even though my father started my training at the same time I started walking. March 10th, 1985 marks the date of my first official exam ( i.e White Sash) in my martial art training. The first rank is always memorable as it marks the beginning of your journey, and if taught right, what you learn at this level will serve you well throughout your ascension to Black Belt and beyond. In September 1984, my very first class, I learned an important lesson that will surely stick with me for the rest of my life. Lately I've been getting many flashes from my childhood, like one of my past posts about the split test my dad had me do when I was 11 years old. Have you had these happen to you? I'm sure you have. We all have them but I tend to focus on the ones where I learned something important or that I was successful at doing. That way, I can use it to get myself in the right state, physical and mental in the present moment when undertaking a task or project I'm working on. These are every important for your self-image and using past successes to fuel your goals and dreams in the now as well as give you confidence knowing you can accomplish them because of those successful past experiences truly is priceless. So what did I learn on that faithful day? My dad had us all lined up and ready to start class. Since I was training and watching classes way before I ever did an official one I already knew how to start the class (a very short form to get the class started that consists mostly of testing your balance and coordination) and I wasn't shy about letting the guy know in front of me that I knew it. At that point, my father gave me the "LOOK". That one look, with no words exchanged taught me a lesson that I would carry on in my training even to this day. I don't think any of the other 6 year olds got it but I did. "Whatever you think you know, you don't" "When it's time to talk, talk" "When it's time to train, train." "There's always something to learn if you just pay attention well enough". That right there has served me alot in my 26 years of training. This one lesson as well as many others have been very valuable in all areas of my life. All this to say: Use your PAST and get back to basics. Attack everything you do with a beginner's mind. Not only will you have more fun doing what it is you do, you'll learn faster, your enthusiasm and passion will soar and you'll get a different perspective on what you think you know. I already know that!
Zig Ziglar's answer to this all too common statement is: "Maybe so but what have you done about it!" Think about that. All the things that you know but didn't act upon. Or the things you were going to get around to doing when the kids would be all grown up or when you lose X amount of weight. Maybe it was when you were going to graduate or when you got that raise you were going to do that something you always wanted to do, but never did. "Faith without works is dead" No matter what you know, in the end, ACTION is the only thing that counts. Have you ever met people who seemed to know it all? Do you fall into that trap sometimes? I know for me as soon as I catch myself thinking: "I already know that" I add the words: "But I want to learn more about it" Learning is a journey not a destination that's for sure. And the journey is much more enjoyable when you face each experience with an open mind and child like enthusiasm. You already know you should cut sugar, avoid processed food, eliminate soft drinks and spend more time strengthening your mind and body through exercise, getting in the habit of performing deep breathing techniques to cleanse your body while bending and twisting your body for maximum flexibility. If you know it then DO it! If you need help in those areas I'd love to help. Here's a list of products that can help bridge the gap between learning something and actually implementing it. Take the Stairs
Although this is good advice from a fitness point of view it's not what I mean. When it comes to your personal development make sure you take the stairs, not the elevator. Taking short cuts in this area is not recommended. Sure the elevator is quick and effortless but nothing worth having and fighting for is acquired through its use. The elevator to the top is, has been, and always will be "out of order" in my view. In order to get to the top in any endeavor you'll have to take the stairs. And you'll have to take them one at a time. Luckily they are right in front of you and you know exactly how many stairs you need to climb to get to the top. Then when you do reach the top you'll be armed with the right tools to stay on top. You can choose to look up the steps or step up the stairs? Which one will it be? When establishing a strong Martial Art Foundation, specifically in Fang Shen Do or whatever style you practice, the first step I would recommend is FSD's 10 secrets volume which also comes with 2 free bonuses. An orientation DVD that furthers your understanding of the foundation and a goal setting tool we use to get you on track and focused when obstacles might get in your way. Take the first step here. Only for the Elite Class?
Just got back from an amazing weekend with my dad and brothers in Punta Cana. Although bathing in the sun was relaxing and energizing it couldn't compare to what we were exposed to, "Information Wise" over the weekend. As you might already know, secret societies have existed for thousands of years. There is one such society that is opening its doors to share with the world, information that was once kept only for the Elite Class. What does this have to do with martial arts? A martial artist is a warrior in every area of life, not just learning how to defend one's self or the ones you love but also protecting yourself from "Dream Stealers" and "Energy Leeches". Losers talk about Action. Winners Act. In anything you do it's important to surround yourself with like minded people. People that raise you up, not pull you down. Keeping this information for ourselves would be wrong. Which is why the first thing that came to mind today was sharing this with you. Hang out where we hang out, you need to be referred though. Invitation only. To access some of the info you'll need this affiliate code: 1508504 Visit this site only if you think you're worth more and think that in your life you feel like saying: "I can do better than this!" Fruit is always on a limb
In other words, nothing is ever easy. To quote Zig Ziglar: "Most people wait until everything is just right before they do anything. They refuse to go out on a limb because they don't understand that the fruit is always on the limb." Everything requires a little bit of effort, action and faith. You have success and a personal champion within you waiting to be discovered. Do you know someone who is "gonna do something just as soon as..." Do you know them personally as in, maybe...You? The people who wait until everything is "just right" before they do anything will NEVER do it. The time will never be just right to start training and losing weight. Nor will it be to stop smoking, changing the food you eat or starting your own business and making a living doing what you're most passionate about. This is the underlying principle of the Fang Shen Do System. To knock out the "I'll get around to it" mentality plaguing so many people today. The best way to get things done is to FEEL good. And what better way to do that than by first mastering your body. A strong body invariably leads to a strong mind that ultimately gets you to follow through on what you want the most. Here's how to do it.Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Life Lessons, Personal Development, Sibok Martin Patenaude, Sijo Jacques Patenaude

The Art of Procrastination
Have YOU mastered it? Resort to it every once in a while? Or, NO, you never use it? It's in your best interest that you don't. Cause it will definitely lead you ... Nowhere! Procrastination makes you hesitate and miss golden opportunities. Procrastinaton is the enemy of progress. Procrastination spawns from being too comfortable. In prehistoric times, procrastination certainly meant death. Can you imagine our cavemen ancestors refusing to hunt because they were too tired or lazy to do so. To me procrastination still means death. Failure to act and let a goal slip from your grasp is a missed opportunity to breath new life into your heart and soul. Having the life sucked out of you doesn't sound like a pleasant experience yet millions of people fall victim to it around this time of year. Stick with your goals and see them through to their completion. Master Yourself, Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Sibok Martin Patenaude

I hear and I forget
With 20 days into the new year, how are you doing? Did you follow my advice and knock off the easiest goals on your list so you get the ball rolling and in turn create a surge of energy and excitement for the accomplishment of your other goals? I hope you did. I can tell you, I did that, and man am I ready to get things done this year. It's just simply impossible to have different results if you do the same things, the same way, using the same words and repeating what you did last year. "If you do what you have always done, you'll get what you've always got." Trust me, start with the little goals and expand from there. You'll build enough momentum and confidence to tackle your major goals. A famous poet once said: "I hear and forget. I see and hear, and I remember. However when I see, hear and DO, I understand and succeed." Keep your goals fresh in your mind's eye. Listen, read and stay inspired. Finally, ACT on your goals daily. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Watch who you listen to
With the upcoming renovations in Kanata and the construction work that needs to be done I can't help but think about common construction jargon. If you've ever had work done in your house you'll understand what I mean. It's hilarious. The same subject always comes up without fail. The person that comes in for the estimate and to inspect the work that needs to be done will always say this: "Which _(Add defamatory word here)__ did this work? "What the _(Add defamatory word here)__ was he thinking?" "He did the work all wrong?" "We'll make sure to do the work right". And surely if another worker would be brought in after the new renovation he'd repeat pretty much the same thing about the new work done: "Who the hell did this work?" "What effin' dummy..." Makes me think of the same disease plaguing martial artists. And especially on discussion boards and forums. You'll find the same kind of behavior in the martial arts world. Watch who you listen to. The internet is filled with so called experts. The answers aren't found in cyber space. To quote Bruce Lee: "There is no ultimate style. The ultimate is inside of You. Be true to yourself and your journey through life" Are you constantly working on the ultimate You? What have you done today to get you one step closer to achieving your goals? Put all the chances on your side.
Are you of the opinion that YOU create your own luck or that sacred objects can bring you luck? Is the mere act of writing down goals enough to get you what you want? Whatever you might believe, in the end, you'll have to take action towards your goals. The reason I bring this up is I still ended up rubbing the turtle's head for longevity and good fortune at the Ming Tombs while on my trip to China last year. I thought I'd better put all the chances on my side. Same thing for your fitness goals. Only relying on the actual exercises you're going to do and not paying attention to what you eat will lead to less than stellar results. Or going at it alone and failing to have some sort of support through a group or club might be a challenge when your motivation and will power are tested. Put all the chances on your side so you can achieve maximum success. The first step is actually knowing what kind of exercises, in what order and at what frequency, you need to do them in. You'll find the answer to these questions and more by getting to work on our Basic Strength Training Kit. It's the first step in acquiring the kind of foundation you need to make struggling with your weight, muscle toning issues and general health problems disappear. Get started now. Watch the Results Show
It's hard to believe a decade has already passed in the "not so long ago" new millenium. A wise man once said about goals: "The important thing is not where you were or where you are but where you want to get". 10 years can fly by and without planning, can seem like you haven't accomplished much during that time when you look back on it. Your future should not be left to chance. For a forward thinking individual each of the 10 years that have passed was a step closer to reaching your master plan. Without goals you cannot grow, you'll feel like you're stagnating. If you've never written goals before I urge you to start this year. If you share this habit, keep it up. Write easy, yearly goals you can knock off in 12 months and remember to focus on creating an image of yourself 10 years from now. What do you want to accomplish in your life? What do you want to be? What level of responsibility do you seek? What kind of standard of living do you want for you and your family? How strong and healthy will you be? Questions of that nature. To quote David J. Schwartz: "You must form an image now of the person you want to be 10 years from now if you are to become that image". What a difference this kind of thinking has made in my life and my training. Apply it to yours and watch the results show. If you've done like I have and chosen martial arts training to improve every area of your life, you're in luck. You'll find many DVD courses and books in our Product Section to help you do that. Be on the lookout as well for new, up and coming DVDS, Books and Courses soon to be released in the new year. All the Best in the New Year
The new year is coming. Will you be ready? You already know that written resolutions without taking action on them is a waste of time. How do you "muster up" the will power to act on the goals you've set? As a rule of thumb, start by the goals that are fairly easy to accomplish this way you'll build momentum and confidence. Or find a way to chunk down a goal. Like losing weight. Instead of focusing on losing 50 lbs right away in January, which might now seem impossible, overwhelming, and so far fetched, turn your focus to losing 1 lb a week. This mini-success so to speak will get the ball rolling and help you believe you can do it. You'll surely end up losing more than 1 lb a week once you start getting results and most importantly getting inspired. This same principle can be used in "flexibility goals" for example or "strength goals". Chunking down is by far the best way to actually follow through on the goals you've set in 2010. I'd like to thank you for being one of my subscribers and even more so if you were a customer of ours this year, I really appreciate it. From my family to yours, may you have an adventurous, fulfilling, and prosperous new year. Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Fang Shen Do, Follow Through, Goals, New Year, Sibok Martin Patenaude

I feel so sad for them
Last night we went out for dinner at the Lac Lemay Casino in Gatineau to celebrate my spouse's birthday. We had a great time and the food was excellent except for one thing. I usually go to the Casino about once a year, not to gamble but to enjoy a show or fine dining. And this "thing" I already know, I'm reminded of it every time I go there. I witness first hand the tragedy of not having goals, projects, a business, and ultimately the failure of not finding what you were born to do. I see a room full of elderly people wasting away at the slot machines. Rows upon rows of white heads staring at a screen. I feel so sad for them. Is that life? Is life so boring and uneventful that you have to settle for that? I'm not condoning a night out of fun and gambling at the casino. It's just that every time I go I see the same thing. If the same time and energy was invested in physical training, dream building, creating values for other people, and focusing on your true calling in life at ALL stages of life, wouldn't that bring you more joy, satisfaction and a sense of contribution? Where do you invest most of YOUR time and attention? "You become what you think about most of the time". The first time my dad told me this powerful little sentence I immediately put it into practice. Build a life you can be proud of, constantly strive to improve yourself and be committed to that philosophy throughout your life. Only then will you win the real jackpot. It's Louse Time! Very Easy to Be Lazy
If you're new to my list of focused, motivated, self-starters, Welcome. (if you're not new jump right away to today's lesson below)
Every day I communicate to you the best ways to train and the kind of mindset it takes to get results either in your physical fitness or martial art training. Friday is always what I call: "Louse Time". Modeled after Bruce Lee's strategy in Enter the Dragon. You know that part where he's having tea with the government agent but he's disturbed by one of his students and Bruce Lee tells the agent: It's Louse Time! The agent replies with his British accent: "yes of course". Since I'm 6 years old that scene has always stuck with me and I'll be using that same strategy with YOU every week.
Friday is where I share with you Life Lessons and Direction given to me by my dad (and Sifu) every Friday.
Today's lesson is: Very Easy to Get Lazy Especially when you've finally gotten what you were running after. Have you had this happen to you? It could of happened to me if I didn't have my weekly lessons with my dad. Which is a good thing if you're also reading this blog post, it means you'll be reminded too.
Everyone is different but usually: Some get lazy physically after they get married or when they have kids. In martial arts it might be when you get a certain high rank. Others get lazy AFTER they've finally gotten themselves in shape and lost the excess pounds they had to drop. Some get lazy after achieving a certain level of success. Whatever the reason might be, the reality is: IT HAPPENS. It's important to realize this sooner rather than later. Complacency always finds a way in. Will you be ready? Do not be a shadow of what you could of been or what you were. Hold yourself to the highest standards possible in the areas of health and fitness. Stay excited about learning and acquiring new skills with child like enthusiasm. Be teachable and motivated to know there is still so much to learn. After each success, stop to celebrate, then get back to work immediately. Realize that success isn't a one time thing. Each day should be evaluated as being a success or a missed opportunity. Everything you have in your life, that which you are most happy or grateful about needs to be tended to and reminded that none of them are permanent unless you devote some time and energy to preserving them. Mind Your Step
I saw this sign at the Forbidden City. Notice the choice of words. Instead of the invasive: "WATCH YOUR STEP!" A simple word change brings about a whole other meaning. One of awareness and mindfulness. The words you use have a direct effect on everything you do, your thoughts and the results you get. Words you use are either empowering or disempowering you. There are many word and phrase changes you can start switching to. The most obvious ones are those you use when it comes to your training, your relationships, your job, etc... When you wake up in the morning before going to work, what do you automatically think about or say to yourself? Or before heading out to class for your weekly training? You can be sure, using the right words while doing something extreme like firewalking is the difference in you reaching the other side safely. Some words can bring about fear, doubt, and uncertainty while others foster confidence, determination, and follow through. This weekend is our last firewalking event of the year. The whole experience revolves around making changes to self limiting beliefs, unlocking your potential, and deeply imprinting a pattern of success you can then transfer to any area of your life.

Bruce Lee Philosophy
I'm still sorting out pictures from my trip to LA. Here's one taken at Richard Bustillo's school in the south bay. A special hand written note from Bruce Lee: "Simplicity is the end of art, the beginning of nature"
I particularly like this statement as it clearly defines where I, and hopefully, YOU want to be. Whether in martial arts or in life, reaching a point where everything flows. To transition from TRYING to be a martial artist to just BEING a martial artist. When it comes to performing techniques they become as natural as walking. Strengthening your mind to a point where giving up is not an option. Acquiring the ability to focus and take action without giving in to distractions realizing control over your will is the supreme court over all departments of your mind. To understand your emotions are both negative and positive, learning to capitalize on the positive ones while transforming the negative emotions into useful action. Finding pleasure in intense exercise and being commited to it all your life. Stay on the path of mastery, self-conquest is the greatest of victories. Martial Artists are a special breed of people, be proud to call yourself one. Sibok M Labels: Attitude, Emotional State, Fang Shen Do, Mastery, Sibok Martin Patenaude

You tried but failed
Yesterday my daughter, like so many other 5 year olds, had a breakthrough. You've all experienced it at different stages in your life. You tried but failed. You got hurt but still you persisted. You felt fear but plunged ahead. At some point you needed someone for guidance and when no one was there you trusted your own instincts. Funny how, throughout the different stages of our life, different experiences and situations call for the same qualities you needed to apply to ride your bike all by yourself. For a 5 year old, riding a bike is one of the scariest things you could ever do. But still we all end up riding one. So why do some people end up being in the best shape of their life while others struggle in that department? Why do some people seem to attract what they want effortlessly while others repel it? The same can be said about relationships, careers, martial art skill, financial independence, happiness, being fulfilled, etc... Whatever you want to accomplish, the potential is there. The seed of greatness, discipline and self-determination resides in all of us, it's your willingness to hop back on the bike even after you've fallen that will make the difference. Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Learn how to harness the power that resides in you by attending our next Firewalk event held on October 25th at 7:00 pm. Sign up for it here. What are you willing to settle for?
"What are you willing to settle for?" What a great question. It's the kind of question that puts everything in perspective. What will you settle for physically? An out of shape body, "taking it" as it comes and hoping to live a long vibrant life? Is it letting your body deteriorate prematurely by exposing it to fast food, smoking, or drugs? Or is it finally not having to worry about your weight by making daily exercise just as routine as brushing your teeth or taking a shower. Maybe it's reaching a level of health, strength and endurance you can be proud of, taking your health in your own hands and leading an active lifestyle where no sport or activity is considered "Off Limits". Isn't it time you finally mastered this area about yourself, feeling good in your skin and feeling like you're in total control of your body? Here's the system I personally use to stay in top physical shape and this, in only minutes a day. Our students already use this method of training with great results which is why alot of them possess the "at home" version of this course as well. Get started now.Master Yourself, Sibok M P.S. Naturally once you're done asking yourself what you'll settle for physically, you'll want to ask yourself the same question for, what will you settle for emotionally and romantically? What will you settle for financially? What will you settle for in your carreer? Ask yourself these questions and see how quickly you feel recharged and unwilling to settle for second best. The cost of not reminding yourself
Do you believe you and I already know what we have to do to be successful, healthy, happy, or fulfilled? I think so. You already know which foods you should avoid. You already know you should engage in daily exercise. If you're practicing martial arts, you know you always have to go back to basics, strengthening the foundational blocks of speed, power, flexibility, intensity and balance. You know success is a moving target and always calls for adjustments along the way. You know happiness comes from doing what you love and always striving for excellence in your life. You know you should spend time alone every day, to breathe, stretch, meditate, contemplate your future, and give gratitude for the opportunities that are coming to you. There's just one little problem. You forget. Why do you forget? Who knows really. Too comfortable? Distracted? Lazy? Too many excuses? Did you ever have this happen to you: You read a book and the author talks about something you used to do in the past but realize after reading it again you stopped doing that same thing months or even years ago? Maybe it was a certain exercise routine you used to do but you missed one day then another, and then days became months and so on until a whole year went by and you haven't worked out? Sometimes it's in relationships. You used to do such and such for your spouse or vice versa in the beginning of your relationship but then complacency settles in and you start taking them for granted, forgetting to keep that spark alive and fresh, leaving you wondering why you don't feel the love anymore. Stretching out of your comfort zone isn't easy, so is constantly treating your training or the relationships you foster with enthusiasm and the novelty that comes with all things new. I know there are alot of things I left out in this blog post as far as what you might need to be reminded of, but I think you "get" what I'm trying to say. Just take this blog post as a reminder and implement a system to regularly be reminded of what's important to you in your life. The cost of not reminding yourself regularly might cost you your health, your wealth, the love of your life, your drive and passion, your happiness, your clarity of thought knowing you'll never utter the words: "I could of been". Talk is Cheap
Hope you had a great weekend, the weather was pristine here in Casselman. Spent all day with my family, my immediate family and kung-fu family yesterday. It was refreshing to play our national sport: Hockey The family that plays and trains together, stick together. I surely couldn't of done what I did this weekend without the help of my kung-fu training. The endurance, the speed, the never give up attitude, and coordination. Just my break-falls and rolls alone saved me from injury. It's always when I play other sports that I realize how kung-fu helped lay a strong sport foundation and if you're like me you've surely come to the same conclusion. I've said it before, everyone should have at least 3 years of martial art training. Above all else, martial arts should teach you about taking action. Thinking, talking, or writing about something is a start but in the end it's all about the DOING. Something the UFC guys didn't do Saturday night if you happened to watch a few of the matches. Maybe YOU also want to start something, you think about it, you've told someone close to you you were going start it but you DIDN'T. Kinda like Fitness. Is it something you just talk or think about or do you commit some time each day to get stronger in that area? Talk really is cheap. Action is king. It reminds me of the saying: "I can't hear what you're saying, your actions speak louder than your words" When will it be the right time to get in shape? Never. The time will never be just right. The more you wait, the more you won't feel like it, you'll say: "maybe tomorrow", the mind will always find ways to distract you away from taking action. The easiest way I've found to get in the fitness habit is to stick to 1 minute exercises. You can exercise for one minute right? An interesting thing happens after a minute, your body craves ... more. Your body craves oxygen. If you've been living a pretty inactive lifestyle and suddenly start, your body will start feeling good very quickly. That's why before you know it, 1 minute will turn into 10 minutes and beyond. We've broken it down for you in a simple system you can start using right away. It's been at the center core of our martial art program for the past 35 years with great results. See what I mean here. Only YOU can answer this one.
What kind of shadow would appear if light could cast your true self on the wall? Would you see a shadow of a 10 foot giant towering from your relatively small frame revealing your level of tenacity and determination showing everyone around you that, like Mark Twain once said: "It's not the size of the dog in the fight, it's the size of the fight in the dog." Would it reveal the true silhouette you wish you had, one of strength, health, and confidence? or worse... Would the shadow cast from a seemingly youthful man or woman that seems "together" physically and emotionally reveal them living on their knees when they should be experiencing life to the very fullest with no self-imposed limitations? Maybe the shadow is unwavering, unflexible, unable to adapt, stuck in the past? Someone else might see 2 shadows, the old you and the new you but fear is standing in your way, stopping you from implementing the necessary steps and habits to make the change "stick". One's shadow might be drifting all over the place, jumping from one idea to the next, unable to see it through, to finish what you start. What if there's no shadow? Maybe you stand for nothing, maybe you haven't found your true self, maybe you're not contributing enough, maybe the vision you have for yourself isn't clear enough. If you had to take one good hard look at your shadow, what would it reveal? Only YOU can answer that one. One thing I can do, is help you shape it though. I can cast some light on you (via these blog posts) but YOU have to stand up to see what shadow is cast by the light. A good kick in the pants
Sometimes all we need is a good kick in the pants. If you're reading this off of my blog on the Fang Shen Do website, like the saying goes: "A picture is worth a thousand words" Nothing is ever easy. EVER. No matter who you are. If you're very lucky you have someone close to you who doesn't hold back and shakes your tree so to speak when you need it or the ideal situation is that YOU are able to kick your own butt to get yourself to take action. I suspect there might be a pre-conceived idea that it's easier for me to get myself to train, read, learn, improve, and stay motivated. If you think that, you're wrong. I just learned and apply one thing: "In order to defeat procrastination you need to get in the habit of taking immediate action" Don't wait. Don't think. Don't question. Whatever it is you're after: fitness, martial art skill, confidence, success, peace, flexibility, or respect, you need to attack your goals. Attack? Yeah, ATTACK. If you think of it in that term you'll be less willing to give up on your goals. If you LAND your strikes, i.e: take action, follow through, act in spite of fear, take a chance, or stay consistent you're going to win. If you TAKE a hit, i.e: procrastinate, quit, complain, lose focus, or miss the big picture all together you're gonna lose. How ironic is it that the greatest opponent you'll ever face is YOURSELF. The only difference is some fights last 5 to 12 rounds, this one will last you a life time. Equip yourself with the right knowledge, the right training, the right information so you're ready for your fight. I suggest you start here. It's Louse Time! Are you Dead or Alive?
If you're new to my list of focused, motivated, self- starters, Welcome. (if you're not new jump right away to today's lesson below) Every day I communicate to you the best ways to train and the kind of mindset it takes to get results either in your physical fitness or martial art training. Today's lesson is: Are you Dead or Alive? I try to be smooother in my approach in my other e-mails during the week but on Friday I feel like I can cut right to the chase. After all, it is Louse Time.
If you remember my original posts about the meaning of "louse time" it means to deliberately insult somebody's behavior and attitude.
Insult is a strong word, I would say the purpose of Louse Time is to shake your beliefs, get you to take action, break a bad habit, bring awareness to a disempowering behavior, or to force you to take massive action.
So I ask you the question again: Are you Dead or Alive?
As you might of noticed there are many dead people walking around among us.
Here's how I've been taught to categorize if someone is Dead:
-Someone who purposely stays in a dead end job, complacently stuck in a routine rut and doesn't create values. -Someone who doesn't realize there is more to us than the physical chores of: eating, drinking, going to the bathroom, and sleeping. -Someone who does not DO what they love, what they were born to do. -Someone who doesn't read and continually educate himself/herself. -Someone who allows external authorities to control their life, failing to make their own decisions. -Someone who accepts mediocrity. -Someone who fails to ask the question: "There has to be a better way" and misses the importance of making self-improvement a top priority. -Someone who's too afraid of stepping out of their comfort zone. -Someone who's given up on their childhood dream.
It all boils down to what kind of existence do you want?
Are you just going through the motions?
Are you continually postponing some of your dreams?
Be careful not to wait too long, waking up one day and saying: "I should of done this" and "I wish I could go back and do things differently".
No one should have to live with regret.
Choose to be Alive, take a chance and follow your heart.

I would be dead
That's how I would feel inside if I didn't train in martial arts. I can't imagine even for a second not doing what I do. Alot of people ask me or even maybe you've had the same question asked to you: "Why do you train so hard" or "How are you able to stick with your training program for so long?" I guess some people think it's unusual to actually follow through and stick with something. Most will jump from one activity to the other and never build any kind of substance in the areas of strength, flexibility, skill and speed. No results can be acquired with the "Grass is greener on the other side" mentality, especially when you're not maximizing what you're doing at the present moment (stretching, strength training, speed training, balance training, martial art training, etc...) . There's a saying my father shares in his seminars that goes like this: "Failure in life is keeping one foot stuck in the future and the other in the past, all the while you're pissing on the most important moment of all: the present." Avoid making the above mistake or else you will never get results no matter which martial art you study, which training program you follow or which fancy equipment you happen to buy. If there isn't a consistent, disciplined, progressive effort given every single workout, the flame for training will extinguish. Consistent, Present moment, Mini-Improvements. That's the secret. Even if it's a centimeter lower in your splits. An extra rep in your push-ups. Holding a strength position for one second longer, 1% less fear in sparring drills. Find something. Remember, adding just one push-up a day consecutively with each passing day for the next year will add up to you being able to do 365 non-stop push-ups in a single session by the end of the year. Conquer haste. Enjoy the journey to mastering yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. There is a system we use to monitor daily improvements, it comes free when you order a copy of our FSD Training Guide. Are you growing?
After having gone through our Training Camp this weekend I'm reminded of how unique the experience was. Something everyone should go through at least once in their life. Today I couldn't help but think about something my dad told me a long time ago. "In life you're either Growing or Stagnating." "Climbing or Sliding." "Living or Dying." Which one will it be for you? Are you constantly looking for ways to better yourself. Do you spend money on external/material things or do you invest in your internal/personal development? The quality of what you put IN will determine the quality of what you put OUT. This quote says it best: "Man often becomes what he believes himself to be. If I keep on saying to myself that I cannot do a certain thing, it is possible that I may end by really becoming incapable of doing it. On the contrary, if I shall have the belief that I can do it, I shall surely acquire the capacity to do it, even if I may not have it at the beginning."~ Mahatma Gandhi Everyday should be an opportunity to learn and better yourself, our product section contains dozens of ways to do just that. The 4 must-haves for developing skill
I haven't posted in a few days, which is unusual for me but was necessary. We're putting the finishing touches on the training camp. Both our kid's training camp on July 24 th & 25 th and the adult one coming up on Aug. 8, 9, 10. Okay let's get on to today's subject: Skill When you translate Kung-Fu, do you know what it stands for? You guessed it: To learn a special skill. And with time hopefully you master that skill. I've identified 4 must-haves for acquiring it. You must of heard this old saying before: Who is the mother of skill? Repetition Who is the father? Consistency. Who is the son of skill? Determination. Who's the daughter? Desire. I believe if you arm yourself with these 4 elements: repetition, consistency, determination and desire, you cannot fail. You have there the recipe for mastering anything you undertake. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin P.S. Before mastering a skill you have to equip yourself with the right knowledge. Beating the Plateau in your training
Over the years, the one question that is commonly asked by students is: "I feel stuck, how can I make it passed this "plateau"? Good Question.
Let me tell you, I have never experienced one.
Let me explain why.
Although keeping stats on number of reps, and "time" held in a certain strength position, or running under a set time is important, it will only keep you motivated for so long.
If numbers are the only thing keeping you motivated well I'm here to tell you: "You need to change your focus"
The way I keep stats is purely for entertainment. To have a log book I can flip through at the end of the year, to see discipline on paper. I couldn't care less if my numbers are down. I just want to be able to say I did it. I stuck to my plan of training 2, 3 , 4 times a week (whatever that number might be for you) When you shift your focus from beating reps to enjoying the FEELING of training that's the day you couldn't care less if you're in a plateau or not. I enjoy the feeling it gives me, the same feeling it should give you. You feel cleansed of toxins.
You feel a natural high. You feel strong and vibrant.
You feel in total control over your mind, body and spirit. You have a deep sense of accomplishment.
And that's all I need to stay motivated and commited to fitness for life.

Add 15 pounds of muscle
I got an interesting e-mail the other day. I've said it before, we have some pretty awesome students. Students that don't let past experiences put a hamper on their future. If there's anything you don't like in your life, change it. This student offers the perfect example. --- Dear Sifu Martin, You've been writing me for quite some time and I am honored. During the last Focus on Results seminar in Montreal I was able to break what seemed unbreakable at first, my ARROW. Today I'm participating in a Triathlon and I will complete it because I know I can. I carry a very heavy emotional baggage even though I'm only 15 years old. I've been through a lot. After having been beaten and sexually abused by my father, I felt this emptyness , it just feels like part of him is dead to me. As you can imagine this had an adverse effect on me and my self-esteem. At that time I weighed 220 pounds and standing at 5 foot 5 inches! One morning I decided I had enough, slipped on my running shoes and started running, convinced I could make it and lose 30 pounds. I never stopped running from that day forward and ended up losing 70 pounds. When I lost all that weight I started asking myself: "What else I could do except for Football to continue my evolution, my physical and emotional progression?" One day my brother told me: "Hey they're opening a kung-fu school just up the street from here, we could check it out?" At that time I weighed 150 pounds and that's when I decided to start my Fang Shen Do training. Today marks my 8th month in kung-fu and now weigh 165 pounds, all the weight I gained is purely muscle mass, backed up by better focus and a renewed sense of purpose. I sincerely thank you and your team. I'm infinitely grateful! I have to go win my triathlon now. S ---- Hi S, Incredible. Congratulations. You know there is no age to inspire someone. YOU insprire me. I'm sure that when you started running it was your way of dealing with your problems by running away from them. After having done the training at the last Focus On Results meeting you've learned to face them head on without any fear. Continue your training, all I can promise you is continued growth and self-discovery. We'll make sure you keep setting higher goals for yourself and we'll offer you the support to reach them whatever they may be. Again, you're an inspiration and let me know anything else I can do to help you. Sifu Martin --- We all have our up days and down days. All I need to do is go through my drawer of success stories like this one to get me back on track. If you have a similar success story don't hesitate to send it my way. Until next time, Sifu Martin P.S Speaking of being down, I wanted to release that link to the 500 year old secret training link to you today, just solving a few tech problems and will send it to you tomorrow guaranteed. I'd like to share with you this quote I received from one of my mentors. It is profound, and if you follow these guidelines they will put you on the right path. -To be so strong that nothing can disturb your peace of mind. -To talk health, happiness and prosperity to every person you meet. -To make all your friends feel that there is something in them. -To look at the sunny side of everything and make your optimism come true. -To think only of the best, to work only for the best and expect only the best. -To be just as enthusiastic about the success of others as you are about your own. -To forget the mistakes of the past and press on to the greater achievements of the future. -To wear a cheerful countenance at all times and give every living creature you meet a smile. -To give so much time to the improvement of yourself that you have no time to criticize others. -To be too large for worry, too noble for anger, too strong for fear, and too happy to permit the presence of trouble. Promise yourself these things. ~ Christian Larson Jot these down and place them on your night table or read them aloud when you awake in the morning. See what kind of effect it has on your attitude, your sense of purpose and the way you tackle daily chores and challenges. This is exactly the state of mind you want to be in before starting your daily meditation. Still unsure as to how to meditate? You can get your meditation course right here. Power of Dreams
No matter what your situation is, you can accomplish anything you desire. If you have a DREAM, you can make it a reality. A dream keeps you motivated, it can help you get through a difficult phase of your life because you keep your focus on the big picture. The VISION you have for yourself. I can't help but to think about my father and how he had all the odds stacked up against him. If you didn't have a chance to read his Bio on the web site it's a pretty inspiring story. It confirms what he's been saying for 3 decades: If he can do it so can you. You just need to believe in yourself. What do you want to accomplish? What do you think about most? What's easy for you to do? What doesn't seem like work? Whatever that is THAT'S your dream and you should pursue it. Some people around you might not agree, you might be criticized but you have to be immune to it. No one can control your destiny, only you can. Dreams are contagious. Especially if you're a father or mother, your dreams can inspire your own kids. Just like my father's dreams helped forge mine. Reaching a point where we share the same dreams about martial arts and personal development. One of his dreams of becoming a firewalking trainer influenced mine and now coming this May we're holding a firewalking event in Bruxelles, France May 8 th to the 10 th. My dad would say: "Everything we have in this world is our own doing, you're 100% responsible for it" That can go both ways. If you don't like what you've been getting out of life you can always dream bigger and better ones. I like to believe how you feel inside reflects what you produce on the outside. The first step to feeling good inside is mastering your body. Here's the training system we've been using with great success for the past 35 years. The secret to always follow through
Whoever or wherever you are you fall in one of these categories. You're either a PROCRASTINATOR. Nothing ever gets started and the time to start something like strength training and physical fitness never seems to be right. You might be a STARTER. Most people are good at starting pretty much anything. Some are actually very good at it. But as soon as it gets challenging, and you realize the secret to physical fitness for example is repetition, consistency and commitment, you "self-sabotage" by finding excuses. You listen to your voice of reason in disguise (you know that voice that tries to sway you away from exercising: It goes something like: "You don't feel like it today", or "You're tired, you should rest". You start missing one day then 3 and before you know it 3 mths go by with an extra 10 pounds around your waist. That same voice comes on again: "Hey, you should start training again". Then the same pattern repeats itself. What can we do to actually FINISH everything we start? How can we become a part of this group, the master FINISHERS. I'll explain to you how, only if you promise to put it to good use. You become a great finisher by understanding what the Japanese call: Shoshin. Translated it means: Beginner's Mind. One who approaches strength training and martial arts with a beginner's mind is fresh, enthusiastic, and open to the various possibilities that lie before you. When you possess a beginner's mind you're not burdened with old habits or thoughts of how things could have been or should have been. It's hard to get bored of your training when everytime you do, you look at it with a new set of eyes. As if experiencing it for the first time with child like optimism. That is the secret to becoming a great finisher. There's always something to learn if you look close enough. If you're always learning you'll always be growing. Transfer this philosophy in everything you do and you too might become a great finisher. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Attitude, Discipline, Fitness Training, Strength Training

Talk less - do more
I have the chance to train with my dad every week. He truly is an inspiration. He doesn't make any excuses. He knows what he has to do and he just does it. He can do pretty much what I do and I'm almost 30 years younger. I know most of you are maybe not as lucky as I am to have a father that's in martial arts and started training you from a young age but find someone. Someone you can think of when you're going through a difficult exercise or a challenging time in your life. You ask yourself what would your mentor do in this situation. You know that scene in Enter the Dragon when Bruce Lee breaks his tea ceremony with the government agent an says: "It's Louse time", and the agent replies: "Yes of course" It's a time where the instructor teaches an important lesson to the student. I get one from my dad every week. I'm working on making those lessons available through several Podcasts which you'll be able to download to your ipod, on your computer or your PSP ("Play Station Portable", just in case you don't know what I'm talking about). Today was "Black Tongue". One of the reasons people don't succeed in business or reach a high level of physical fitness is exactly that. They have a black tongue. Everything that comes out of their mouth is garbage. They prefer to complain than to train. Things like not doing what you said you would. Being a king or queen of excuses. Preferring to complain about what other people have instead of focusing on what you really want. Concentrating on the problem instead of the solution. Instead of doing the above, talk less - do more. Or make use of your tongue correctly. Use isometric breathing for tough exercises by putting your tongue behind your teeth as you exhale. Connect your tongue to the palate of your mouth to activate blood and chi flow. Use empowering keywords to not give up in a challenging exercise. Say "Thank You" for the special people you have in your life. Reaching a decent level of physical fitness is attainable. You just need to learn to become a self-starter. An action phrase I use all the time in moments of weakness, as quoted from W. Clement Stone is "Do it now". You're sitting on the fence, you want to get started but you don't. Instead, take charge, no more garbage, "Do it now", here's where you need to go. Master Yourself, Sifu Martin Labels: Attitude, Discipline, Strength Training

Getting fit again after cancer
It's e-mails like these that really inspire me to do what I do: Dear Sifu Martin, First, I would like to tell you how much I love my training with you guys. I only train once a week, and I missed a lot of training days due to my health. But what I'll tell you right now is that, in only that little amount of time of training I saw so much improvement in myself. As you know I have been through cancer treatments last year and that is really hard to over come, especially to get fit again. 3 months after my treatments for cancer I tried to pass the PREP test for Policing, but was not able to make it...at all. Now, about 1 month ago I miss the obstacle part only by .16sec. This is really great for me to see how much I improved and that tells me that the next time I go, for sure I'll pass it. With your training and my devotion to follow my dream in becoming part of the Ottawa Police Recruit, I know that I'll make it. Again, thank you for your time and I'll be seeing you all soon. Sylvie C. S.M: Wow Sylvie, it's people like you that give others strength and hope to reach for your fitness goals no matter what the odds. I'm honored and proud of you and may you get your wish. Strength Training not so cool
Only you have control over what you feel, what you want and what you think. Did you ever want to try something new but didn't because you were afraid of how friends, co-workers or family would react? You might want to change how you look, buy a new car, or start your own business but you don't. Some of you might not pursue the goal of physical fitness because of fear of what your friends or family would say. You might be telling yourself that if you suddenly become fit and toned you'll stand out from your circle of friends who are not. God forbid you would want to be different from them. Most won't change a filthy habit because of social pressure. A big one is to quit smoking. My girlfriend used to be a smoker 8 years ago and actually lost a friend because of it. Weird Huh? I guess some people like to be in a hole and when you decide to climb out of it they take it personnally and they become an A- hole. For me my favourite is when I meet someone from school or an old acquaintance and I ask them: "Hi, what have you been doing?" , and they reply "Oh, F%$#@! All". Well that's just great I say to myself. It's very popular among alot of people to say that, or that doing nothing seems to be cool. Getting drunk every week seems to be cool. Smoking seems to be cool, being 30 and having big pot bellies seems to be cool. A kind of culture that's okay to be a loser. Training and physical fitness seems to be not so cool because it takes a bit of effort. I don't want to be like everybody else. My father taught me a long time ago to zig when people zag or to be a contrarian. If people are going one way I go the other way. I just know one thing: I want to feel good. If you have a physical fitness goal, go for it. Let no one steal your motivation. Be smart, tell no one about it and if people start noticing changes in you just say:" That's funny I haven't been doing anything special lately?" Some things you share and others you keep for yourself. Let me let you in on a little secret, our strength training kits give you the tools you need to make that fitness goal a reality. Smiling in the face of Adversity
You've heard me talk about my flat tire stories. Well guess what, one more last night! This is number 6 for me. As I was driving back from my mother's birthday supper, it happened. This is really testing my patience, but as the saying goes: "If Life throws you lemons, you turn them in lemonade". What kind of lemons is Life throwing at you? You might be going through a divorce, sustained an injury that has put a hamper on your training, loss of work, death in the family, an unforeseen mechanical problem on your car (my favourite), poor investment returns, and on and on we go. Whether you like it or not, my mother would say: "This too shall pass" I also like this quote by Frank A. Clark: "If you can find a path with no obstacles, it probably doesn't lead anywhere. " We've had our share of set-backs, challenges and criticism over the years and for them we are thankful. You become very resilient and creative as well as strong and un-shakeable. You learn from every experience. That's why experience is so valuable. It shows you've been there, you've made mistakes and recovered, you've faced adversity and succeeded. You should have a rule: you will not learn from anyone who hasn't been there. Let's take strength training for example. There are many places you can go to learn about it. But... How many people can say they've tested their training philosophies for the past 30 years and experimented what worked and what didn't on thousands of students. Saving you the time and money to do this on your own. How much would it of cost you to keep a center open for 30 years, trained over 25,000 test subjects and monitored their results, targeted every kind of person: big, small, tall, short, young, old, weak, strong, to know how they responded to the training, spent countless hours doing the training yourself to see which exercises would yield the fastest results. How much? 100 thousand, 50 thousand, 25 thousand. It's priceless. When you buy our strength training kits, that's what you're buying, all that time and experience, all that testing of what works, the trials and errors, all that for 79 $ bucks. This is what I love about modeling. Instead of doing all the work you let somebody else do it for you. And this what we've done. I don't think you want to go through what we've been through to bring you this information. Do it the smart way, your tried and true strength training kit is waiting for you right here. Adversity? Perfection vs Excellence
I just fell on a disturbing statistic. Over 1 million people worldwide commit suicide annually. It's hard to understand why someone would do that. As Sijo has taught me: Life is everything, Death is nothing. Nothing will ever be "just perfect" in your life. I do not seek perfection only excellence in everything I do. One of the best ways to beat depression is by Strength Training. Sometimes it's not even depression it's plain ol' boredom. Most people live a very monotonous life. Same routine every day, never trying anything new. That's why our martial art training is such a breath of fresh air. You never know what to expect. The workouts are always different, the concepts and techniques vary from class to class, you're forced to fight your biggest adversary: Yourself. You discover some of your weaknesses and work towards turning them into strengths. You learn to face fears and overcome them. Since we're so strong on personal development in Fang Shen Do, you the student, has the choice to face fears of heights, fire, public speaking, sparring, glass walking, and arrow breaking. Such was the way hundreds and thousands of years ago. To use your martial art training to reach a level of confidence, awareness, peace, and mastery over your mind and body. Remember not all martial art schools are the same. Some focus purely on the physical. That might be fine for awhile but you will reach a point in your life where you need more than just the physical aspect of martial art training to feel it's worth pursuing. Are you ready for action?
If you're like most. No. Some people will never change. They are stuck in their ways, repeating the same destructive behaviour for years before realizing they need help. For some, sometimes it's too late. Habits are hard to break, if you don't change your way of thinking. Sometimes it just doesn't "hurt enough", therefore we tolerate it until we get fed up and do something about it. But most never make it to the fed up stage. Smoking one cigarette a day doesn't hurt anyone. Then one cigarette eventually becomes 1 pack and 1 pack becomes 3 and so on. Until you get "emphysema". Then you're really motivated to change your ways, aren't you? Why wait to get to that point to break the habit? Maybe it's pushing to tomorrow what could of been done today? Maybe it's always putting work before family? If you take a minute to think about it, you'll find at least one thing that needs to be worked on. It takes 21 days to break or implement a new habit. Let's take the habit of Daily Exercise. To some, exercise is a scary word. To most, exercise means work and work means pain. When you think about it, pain is only a signal passing through the nervous system. What if we could "dim" that signal to eventually block it completely? The first thing you should do is incorporate fitness training in your daily routine. For example, when you wake up in the morning before going to the bathroom you pump out 10 Squats. Then as you're brushing your teeth with your opposite hand, you hold your balance on one foot. After that you do 10 push-ups. And so on. This way you don't realize you're exercising, you're playing a trick on your mind. If you need any other ideas of "what to do" during your day, pick up a strength training kit here in case, as I suspect, you find yourself deviating from your goals this year. Body says NO but it means YES
Something I've realized over the years is when I don't feel like training and actually work up the will to train, that training is the best one I ever had. Strange Huh? Kinda like my body was saying NO but it really meant YES. Whenever I get that: "I dont feel like training today" feeling, I realize I must of done something wrong the day before. I figure my body is giving me a warning sign. Maybe I didn't eat right the day before, maybe I slept too much, or perhaps I didn't sleep enough, it might be stress or lack of sunlight. Something. So make sure to act on that message and go do something physical. Drop some cards down and put in a great workout. The easiest way is to get your very own strength training kit. They're loaded with various exercises and they take out any downtime thinking of what you'll actually "do" exercise wise. Pick one up right here, Aim Higher, Sifu Martin P.S. Remember what I talked about before: Strong are they who force their thoughts to control their actions.
